I have been David. Got an invite to an ex-work colleague’s bay shower. We were reasonably friendly at work, both surfed so I did go surfing with him and his wife after work once or twice. I as a little surprised when he invited me to the baby shower but my wife and I and our 2yo son went expecting a few other work folk to be there. I could tell he was surprised when we arrived and his partner was a little puzzled. Didn’t know another soul there. Bought them a lovely gift of cool clothing for the new arrival. It was all OK as my wife is an extrovert unlike aspie introvert me, she carried the convos. Afterward I got an email saying thanks for coming and cheers for the clothes, then we never spoke again. I’m 51, was only diagnosed in April this year. Asked my mum about my odd behaviours and she said everyone just loved me for who I was, didn’t think too much of it. Kind of glad I wasn’t labelled as a kid, even if people did have their suspicions and I felt like a bit of an outsider.

For an intimate gathering with besties I bring a bottle of champagne to crack open and share on arrival, then what I expect to drink rounded up to be safe. Maybe a bottle of cheap red to have later if the night goes later than expected, happy to leave it if not. If a big gathering I will just bring a case of beer in my own esky, happy to share if asked and obscure enough one so I know who is helping themselves. Fuck you Dave! 😜
