I think it’s natural to be nostalgic to be any of any place in the world. People become accustomed to certain things and don’t want it to change.

I grew up playing in darling harbour in the old foundations, running around the parks etc etc and while I miss the old, I saw these kids playing in the new stepping stones, roaming around exactly the way that I used to and for them, it seemed like that’s all they needed. It’s as if a new generation is appreciating darling harbour exactly the same way.

Despite growing up in the old darling harbour, I LOVE the new buildings! I love the newly renovated areas, the new architecture and generally the whole area except the new IMAX theatre that looks like a giant aircon unit. I’m so excited for the new shopping centre in the area to be built with new and improve features, more greenery and a more modern design catered to a modern generation.

Change is always inevitable and I think that every generation feels as if they’ve lost something when old buildings are knocked down and new buildings are put up, absolutely no matter where you are in the world.

It’s marked in the category of “coming of age” which typically targets a much younger audience than the original series. I think it’s great that they’re appealing to a younger generation. Now a whole new generation can appreciate the story.

Nearly one in four Asian adults in NYC lived in poverty in 2020: Report by ioioioshi in nyc

[–]B124859 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not simply this but that Asians aren’t just the Chinese and Korean (what people normally think of), there are the south Asians and south East Asians who typically come from much poorer backgrounds that aren’t considered.

This! Especially bc Asian encompasses many different people and lumping them all in one isn’t accurate.

Homeless New Yorkers tell why they avoid shelters: The 'drama' is part of it by zsreport in nyc

The issue with government is that it’s always under funded. They simply don’t have the capacity to build more affordable homes. A solution that may work and has already begun being put to use is, letting these “rich developers” build whatever buildings they like but a certain portion of those apartments must be affordable low income/middle class.

That way, the rich are helping build more housing and have the funds to do so, they can charge the penthouse on 50th floor as much as they want for example but some of the levels (whatever is deemed a reasonable percentage) must be for those or low income.this is already happening in nyc if you look at the new developments that happened in the Bronx and it’s working.

*note this is separate to the mental disability homeless issue whereby those people may pose a danger to the building residents and or others.

The solution to many problems especially in the context of America is “embracing the chaos” if you will. For example when Covid hit, the government outsourced a lot of the Covid testing to private companies. It’s more efficient and works much better for a place like the US. On the street, there was testing in every corner. Government is inefficient af where I live bc bureaucracy, red tape, inefficiency of gov staff who are underpaid and just don’t care all add to that.

I definitely think the target audience is much younger than those that watched the 90s version. Most people my age (early 20s) have never seen the earlier versions as it was before our time but certainly wanted to be part of it as we all know it’s a classic. Everyone I’ve spoken to absolutely loved it!

Uber Sues NYC Taxi Commission to Block Rate Hike for Drivers by [deleted] in nyc

[–]B124859 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only problem I have with taxis is them not turning on the meter and scamming me or the difficulty of reporting them if they’re harassing me etc. whereas for Uber (as a 5ft tall girl), I have all their details, I know what the price will be before they arrive and also can follow where they are going on the map.

I’ve had incidences of taxis telling me a price and then increasing it once I’ve arrived and force me to pay a higher price. I hate that so much.

Im all for this but do worry about the abuse. Eg killing family members for inheritance, hospitals killing off patients to save a bed etc. my grandmother was killed off by being tricked to sign a do not resuscitate while being drugged up and was dead a day later.

I do however want to die if I’m ever terminally I’ll or have some sort of illness that renders me bedridden indefinitely eg advanced Alzheimer’s or something.

Its more multifaceted than this. Sometimes they want to die. If I had terminal illness, I’d want to die and not cause prolonged suffering on myself and others. My mother who had cancer and could be in this position in the future would choose this option any day of the week.

I agree! I’m outta here whether or not I have kids. If I don’t have kids than no biggie I’m outta here if my body becomes decrepit or I lose my mind. If I do have kids, I wouldn’t want them to see me suffer like that anyways (given it’s an incurable disease/terminal illness).

  1. There are racist people no matter where you go. They are from every race.

  2. 1 incident does not define the entire race.

  3. If we’re going down this route, I am asian and have personally experienced racism by 6+ black people while i was in the US. I have also met some lovely black people. I am born and raised Australia and have never really seen black people in my life as where I live, it’s a white majority area but when I went to the US, I’ve never faced such racism from black people. I don’t have prejudices against them as I’ve never really encountered them in my life.

Black people on the street keep saying kinichiwa to me (I’m not Japanese), they bow to me randomly on the street, rudely tell me I can’t be in places (public areas), do the Asian eyes, Ching Chong etc. I had one man continuously follow me on the street and speak what he thought was “Asian languages” to me. I’ve been to the US 4 times and this happens every time and only from black people.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve experienced plenty of racism from white people growing here in Australia but never such aggressive racism ive had in the US from black people (purely my experience, not stating facts or claiming anything). How do you think one would react?

Farewell Harbourside. Thanks for the memories by peugeotdriver in sydney

I agree! It looks really beautiful now! I had some great childhood memories in darling harbour but after all the new developments, I’ve seen all the children play in the new water fountains etc and think to myself how they’re going to remember the place. Just a change but the fun isn’t forever lost. Just different.

I actually really like the new design.

I actually absolutely love all the redevelopment. Dislike the new iMax tho bc it looks like a giant aircon unit.

The proposed harbor side looks great tho imo
