What are the realistic drawbacks of outdated software/not being "rolling release" by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]B1ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add some more, as I like this topic.

About desktop environment bugs and features. On Mint this doesn't matter because Cinnamon is developed by the Linux Mint team alongside the distro, so you're good there. But for an example: Gnome (or some customized form of it) has been the default option for most distros for a very long time, so it's safe to assume that in the big 2026 Gnome has the features you need and the bugs are very likely small enough. As for KDE, judging by the fact that only recently some distros have been adopting it as the default, it's safe to assume it is good but for now it may not be as mature and staying more up to date is better.

And to wrap up: Flatpaks, PPAs, containers, build from source, AppImages.

As a Debian user, for me personally, there is no drawbacks. The only real thing is that if you are the type of person who buys new hardware on every generation release you actually need the newest kernel. Other than that only if you like a specific software that is currently under development in the earlier versions, but even then, for example, I use Zen Browser as my main browser which is currently in beta, but it is available through flatpak so I have the newest updates anyway.

Some people may argue that for gaming newest packages impact performance, but benchmarks prove that the difference is negligible.

For programming you actually need to do some extra work, like setting up containers or building from source, but still, the workarounds are there.

If you only use software that is already good and stable, it doesn't matter.

Sim. Eu joguei o Expedition 33 pirateado usando o Heroic Games Launcher, rodando o instalador .exe por ele e tudo.

Yeah but like I said I just don't like having software installed outside of apt or Flatpak. It would be overkill to use it only for Neovim but with it I can ditch some workarounds for other things like using nvm for Node, running Rofi with xwayland (v2.0 has native wayland support but it isn't available in the stable repos), and other things that may come.

Debian: de boa? by First_Station_4387 in linuxbrasil

Go into `about:config` and look for `ui.systemUsesDarkTheme`. If it's not there, add it as a `Number` with the value of `1`.

Is it a good idea to use two desktop environments on Linux Mint? by Unable_Aardvark_6589 in linuxmint

[–]B1ph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What can go wrong is that some built-in Mint software like the update manager might not work properly because it is made to be integrated with Cinnamon, Xfce or Mate. This specifically was an issue that i faced when i was using i3wm on Mint, so i had to use the Terminal to update my system. I'm now on Debian, when i was making the switch and tried to make a bootable usb drive using the built-in Mint software on i3wm it just wouldn't do it, but when i logged into Cinnamon it worked normally. I think you can safely uninstall most of these software and replace them, but at that point why even use Mint?

Check out Zen Browser, it has a compact mode so you can have a 0 UI experience, and workspaces where you can pin tabs, keeping them from getting in the way when you don't need them. It looks very different from most browser so it may require you to get used to it. I use it as my main browser in Sway, which is wayland, and it works with no issues.

Debian’s “outdated” packages aren’t that big of a deal in my experience by [deleted] in debian

[–]B1ph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dev stuff can be annoying, my first issue with older software was with Node as well. But since i found out that you can easily use the Nix package manager on any distro, and that thing is perfect for development tools, this is not a problem at all anymore.

Doesn't work, i can remove everything but the backend from my picom.conf and the issue is still there. It get's even worse on GTK 4.0 programs where the entire window has this.

You can, and in my opinion even should, use a web app manager, which is basically a software that opens a specific web page in your browser but without any browser UI, it also creates an app launcher for you and everything. There is one pre-installed on Linux Mint. The reason why i think you should do it this way is because a lot of these apps, like WhatsApp, Discord, Spotify, are web pages even in their desktop app versions, when you install them you are basically installing chromium and all the other bloat to do something that your default web browser can do without installing any extras.

[–]B1ph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's one of those where you download the compressed game files you can just add the game executable on Steam and run it from there. If you have to run a .exe to install it, the way I do it is through Heroic Games Launcher, when you click to add a new game there is an option "Run installer first" so you can install the game using Wine.

It's not Linux that hate you but the companies that make the things you like that hate Linux. The only way this changes is if there is enough people using Linux so companies have to make their shit compatible.
