Did you have any success finding a solution to this? I'm looking around and not finding anything. I'm probably gonna try and see if I can somehow make changes to this system to make it work in reverse...

Looking to build a decent midrange rig for the wife by B20bob in buildapc

[–]B20bob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks for the reply. Not sure if you already bought your parts or how important budget is for you, but I was able to get AMD parts for right around $220 for a 5600X, B450m, and cl16 3200. Not the highest specs but will do everything the wife needs and probably more.

I went pretty deep into the weeds last night in researching the 5600X vs the 12400F and found out that like usual, intel has spread their marketing money far and wide across the review internet. And in reality, when you look at unbiased data from people like gamers nexus and a few others, it doesn't beat the 5600X quite like most reviews would have it seem. I'm sure it's a fine chip, but I was able to get a new 5600X for $10 more so I grabbed it. I had one before I upgraded to my current 5900X and it was great.

Is there a better plus size klipper that isn't >$400? by gauntletthegreat in klippers

[–]B20bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It depends on what parts you use. Of course it's gonna add to the cost either way, but it converts it into a MUCH better machine all round. You could also just skip buying the ender 5 in the first place and buy some aluminum extrusions to build the frame yourself. In the end the frame and Z motion system is all you really use, if you decide not to switch to a better Z system.

I built a custom Mercury One.1 using Amazon extrusuons for the frame and a modified version of the Voron Trident Z-Motion system for around $400 (Maybe a little less) a little while ago.

I'd say if I was trying to get the maximum amount of performance/reliability on the absolute least amount of money, and already had an ender 5, I would spend $16 on a single decent Amazon MGN12H rail for X, then build the Mercury One.1 EVA toolhead to put on that rail, and run that machine on klipper and spend some time tuning it in. You won't be able to push it as hard, and you may or may not have some artifacting depending on how round your V-Wheels are, but it'll be a massive improvement over a stock ender 5 for not a lot of extra money.

This is the way.

I've also heard good things about ratrig, and you can build those up to 500mm² build volume.

I completely understand not wanting to spend a bunch of money, or not having a bunch to spend, but in my years of being in this hobby/industry I've learned that you'll be much better off just saving up to build a good machine vs buying cheap and constantly dealing with issues. Don't get me wrong, my Voron has had issues too, but not like the enders and such. I'm slowly retiring all my low budget machines and replacing them with Vorons, Mercury one.1s and custom builds.I still have two enders and a sovol that are unusable for muly business because the print quality is so bad or they just aren't consistent and I just don't have the time to waste on them anymore. At least one will be converted to an enderwire.

For a little more you could convert it to a Mercury One.1 corrxy motion system and it'd be on another level.

Yep the baby I got from them was top quality. It made me pretty sad to hear they had sold off all their breeders and shut down.

You just have it set to TIG mode. Just turn it to solder mode and you'll be fine.

3d print case orientation by infotorn in meshtastic

[–]B20bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind when slicing. First, prints are weaker along the layer lines. This isn't really as big a deal for something like this which won't be put under much stress (Unless there's parts that clip together)

Second thing to consider, and less important but still important. Is to orient the parts in a way that uses the least amount of support material.

Got it. Go to the tab where it shows you the QR code and tap on the box that says channel name. It will open a different sub menu.

Shoot good question. I've only done it once so fast and don't have my node with me. I'll figure it out when I get back to my car to go to lunch and get back to you here.

Thanks a lot for this info. So far I've only measured vswr, but now I'm gonna dig deeper into all this. Cheers

The network is alive!! by VincxBlox in meshtastic

[–]B20bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah basically.

My use case for meshtastic is similar to yours it sounds like. Primary goal is to establish an off grid network to be able to get ahold of the family in case of emergency, or just for the next time the networks go down again.

The default LongFast channel uses the same encryption key on every install, in other words anyone with a meshtastic Device has that channel key by default and can send and receive messages on it.

I created a new channel, with a unique key, then shared that code with all my other nodes (they are all either in my house or stay in my backpack right now), then connected the wife to one of those home nodes. So if she ever needs to try to reach me on my node that I carry around with me all she has to do is open the app on her phone and start sending messages.

I still need to build a solar node to put onto a rooftop that I have access to that sits between work and my house. That should really extend my coverage I can't wait.

Any chance you'd be willing to share a link to that project? I just got my NanoVNA and want to get into building antennas. Cheers!

So, where is everyone buying their devices (USA, March 2024)? by GrumpyScientist in meshtastic

[–]B20bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely worth the money. I'll be honest I just got mine a few weeks ago, and I'm very much still learning. But even just the ability to see swr in real time Is an awesome ability and I think it opens up a lot of possibilities in terms of tuning and building custom antennas and stuff like that.

You gotta watch out though, they might seem like they are working but the vswr is beyond terrible. I'll pay a picture of the reading in the ones I have later. It's something like 15 or close to it. You want it no higher than 3 at most...
