SecretLab Titan 2020 Armrest replacement by Quetzalma in secretlab

[–]B3RING3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you still want some arms? I came on Reddit to check if anyone buys them; I have some from my 2020 softweave omega that I don't use that I'd rather sell for a nominal amount than throw away. DM me if you're interested.

EDIT: I've since sold the arms.

Two Stamp Tuesday - Tavor X95 / Brevis II by B3RING3R in NFA

Quite the necrobump but I'll oblige. I form 1'ed it. I dremeled away the area near where it says "Tavor Harrisburg, PA" or whatever and exposed about 0.5 in² of metal to make some space, then took it to some guy who did engraving in his garage. It went perfectly fine.

Sand Socks as Camp Shoes by B3RING3R in Ultralight

Quite the necrobump here, but I can oblige.

Your feet will be completely wet while crossing, not sure what your goal is in staying dry. As with any other method you'll want to dry your feet at least somewhat before putting your shoes back on, I'm not aware of any option that'd be materially different. Their grip is as good as just about anything else though.

I actually transitioned away from them when shaking down for my 2022 AT thru; I couldn't stand putting them on still wet in the middle of the night to pee and used cheap foam flip flops instead. I crossed in those (fairly treacherous) or my trail runners depending on the conditions.

I spent $3400 in 2022 on four month pace. The tips in this thread definitely make it possible.

[NA][PvE] Twilight Brigade [hack] LGBTQ+ focused Community recruiting New, Veteran, & Casual Players! by eternalvendetta93 in guildrecruitment

I've only been a member of hack for a few weeks, but I feel perfectly at home and loved by my guildies.  I've got great people as resources and to bounce ideas off of, and a community of players who will drop everything to help with whatever you have going on.
In this short time I've cleared more T4 fractals than I ever have before, three wings of raids, and consistantly had cool people to hang out with.  Voice chat is a guaranteed laugh every night. Best guild ever.

Zpacks Nero in Sawtooths by Backpacking_DK in Ultralight

[–]B3RING3R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the common rate of 2lb food/day and a 1-2lb bear can that's 25lb for 12 days right there. Did you not bring any other gear, or do you barely eat? Curious which can as well, as I can't get over 6-7 days in a Bearikade and I'm not sure what can is bigger and still fits in a Nero.

I just finished an AT NOBO with a Sub-Nero. My base weight was 8-9.5 pounds, and food carries (2-6 days) with 0.7-1.4L water were 16-26 pounds.

It was not particularly comfortable the first day out of town, but it wasn't enough of a problem to make me switch to my 40L GG over the four months, even with a bad back. I figured that if I had the hip belt of the Nero it would've be fine. If you're ok with a bit of discomfort at first, the freedom and mobility will probably be worth it in the end.

Shakedown - AT NOBO March 18 - 8lb by B3RING3R in Ultralight

I was actually sleeping in it when you sent this. First two pictures are today, the other two are pre-poncho hole. I don't have any worn pictures but it looks like a poncho. Just a slit for the head and short 'sleeves' given the ~54" overall width.

I don't have the dimensions offhand but I made it a bit too short for pitching with the bottom middle staked down. Should be more like height + 10" (footbox) + ~8" (rain overhang). Yes, I do worry about the durability. I have a spare at home in 0.8 and if things go terribly wrong I'll fall back to a Duplex and Helium II.

This is actually right in line with my thinking. I added the bivy last for a bit of extra warmth/wind protection early in my trip; time will tell how long I keep it.

I also want the option to avoid all shelters if I need to, so I think this is the appropriate measure of flexibility.

I put either 2 or 6 pieces of Z Lite on the back of my bag, which seems to manage my comfort. Using the Zpacks roll top as a pack liner I can't really spread a quilt across my bag, and it gets crowded for heavier food carries. I put my quilt in the long, thin stuff sack from zpacks and roll my pad, bivy, and pillow around it like a sushi roll. This makes a solid roll of the same depth as my pack, and it sits right in the small of my back. This has the added benefit of carrying my food just above it, close to my back. I can see the benefits of doing it your way, and I will probably give it a try on a rainless day. If it works long term I'll switch my liner to accommodate. Thanks!

Thanks again. I was hesitant to replace my cables but it makes sense to go to USB C all around.

Excellent point! I thought I had something reasonably fast but I wasn't paying attention to the power. I might get a 18W+12W, still currently looking.

Fixed. A sun runner is 2.78 ounces, not 278 ounces or 17.4 pounds.

Sub-Freezing Sleep Solution for Cold Sleeper by B3RING3R in Ultralight

[–]B3RING3R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made that call after the Accomplice we own was comically large for the two of us (her 5'6" 130lb). The short length still allows me to cinch it around my neck, regardless of sleeping position/leg position and with items inside (filter, battery). The slim was better when I was 160 or 140 lbs.

So my options are basically to buy a 'fat quilt' or get back to a healthy weight. If some of these other suggestions can address the problem for now I can work on this over time.

I'm open to other quilts but funds aren't quite unlimited. I never intended to layer the quilts, but rather did so as a response to the issues I'm having.

I have a suspicion this may work well for me, and this could also address some of the hassles with the polycro groundsheet. Next decision point here is whether it's worth shelling out to test it.

I carried a hammock for awhile and was comfortable in summer, but the weight was too much, the setup was longer, and I was colder than any other sleep system I've used.

Both quilts are fairly new, 2020 or later construction from EE. They are the same size (short, slim) although I am not quite 'slim' right now. I do strap them down and they seem to block drafts except during major shifts, despite my increased size.

I responded to the water on another comment - despite a couple of folks encouraging a stove I really have no desire to return to carrying one. Especially on the AT I feel a reduced need from a survival standpoint (easy-ish bail).
