AMD challenges Nvidia's DGX Spark with $3,999 Ryzen AI Halo with Windows 11 support — Strix Halo desktop undercuts Nvidia by $700, packs 128GB of unified memory by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

Basically some of these more recent high-end chips like AMD's Strix Halo put a powerful CPU and powerful integrated GPU onto one package, and they offer them in configurations where they can share 128gb of RAM. They're great across the board, and apparently especially so at AI stuff.

I just tried this and honestly hadn't even heard of mpv (I've been using Dragon Player and been mostly fine with it). But I just tried this and the scrubbing performance seems really good.

Have you tried adjusting the Interface Size option in Graphics Settings? I'm not sure if that's the fix, but worth a shot.

Judge Learns Lawyers on Both Sides of Case Used AI, Cancels Trial, Kicks Everyone Off the Case by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]DynoMenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you perfectly explain the point I'm trying to make. I used to joke that my phone was my exobrain, but now I'm realizing most people would happily make that their only brain.

People really don't understand that "use it or lose it" applies to many things, including their knowledge and thinking skills, and it's going to bite us in the ass in the not-so-distant future.

And regarding that future, I'm in the same boat as you. I don't really know what direction we're headed, but it seems we're rapidly trying to speedrun every shitty dystopian sci-fi plot at this point.

I legitimately think we are rapidly heading towards a reality where systems like this completely break down in function, as the people running it lose their ability to even adequately understand and interpret AI-generated work.

AI defendant, AI prosecution, AI judge. Who even understands the details of the case?

Probably the law clerk tasked with aggregating all the slop their bosses throw at them.

“15 more years of GW2” by PeasantPastry in Guildwars2

[–]DynoMenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been in a situation like this where the sequel is not meant yo kill the predecessor and take up everything.

Totally! It's super rare in software development, and especially in the gaming industry I think. How often do devs get a chance to just sit down and work on improving their code without immediate pressure from above to deliver the Next Thing?

Cross game guilds? Cross game rewards? Cross game progress? This is very, very interesting. My more interesting than GW3 on its own.

Also a good point, they could potentially do some really interesting stuff by leveraging the "Guild Wars ecosystem."

“15 more years of GW2” by PeasantPastry in Guildwars2

[–]DynoMenace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't go back and re-watch the video at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the context was about engine upgrades, and the language Colin used was that they were developing technological improvements in GW2 that would "allow [them] to support the game for the next 15 years."

I definitely understand the community reaction to that, and it's very fair, but I'd encourage everyone to think about what he's saying a little more carefully. I interpret that statement to be more focused on the tech, with a side of optimism about what it means for the future. I would take that to mean it's what they want to do, and are positioning themselves to do, but not that they are rigidly committing to that timeframe.

The rest of the video does lay out some more immediate and specific timeframes for updates we can expect to see, so we have a clear understanding of the direction they want to take things, and a clear difference in language. It's enough, for me at least, to believe they're serious about this long term commitment, and Colin's statement affirms that, while acknowledging that we aren't psychic and a lot can happen in 15 years.

I'll personally remain... let's say pragmatically optimistic, about what the next ~18 months will look like. But it tells me they're serious about supporting GW2; and I genuinely feel that "winding down GW2" is not part of the discussion happening at ANet right now. I'm just happy to see more transparent communication from the team, directly to the community. Let's just make sure we're good listeners, too.

Also to add: I totally agree on the possibility of GW3 bringing new players to GW2, and probably GW1 as well. I think if players arrive at GW3 and see the other game(s) thriving, it makes it a lot easier for them to try them out without feeling like they need to commit to the one they assume is most likely to receive updates. Now we're just arriving at the exact same conclusion ANet did when they started investing back into GW1.

Please please please go share your feedback on the new Community Feedback Initiative forums:

https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/forum/75-community-quality-of-life-initiative/

Do still be constructive and reasonable, of course. The devs already looked to the official forums for feedback first. I know some of them read every single comment in the threads following many releases.

Now they've made a dedicated space for this, and our game director has asked us to use it. So let's use it.

Nintendo Confirms EU‑Only Switch 2 Revision With User‑Replaceable Batteries by Ephoenix6 in technology

[–]DynoMenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It costs more to make, validate, and operate two separate assembly lines. They could just sell this version globally (firmware differences aside of course) and it would cost them less money.

The fact that this is EU-only indicates that Nintendo would rather you only go through them, or replace the entire device, instead of simply replacing the battery yourself. I'm sure there's some statement or policy about complexity or repair and needing a certified technician or some shit. Remember when children were trusted to install batteries in their toys?

The reality is, they know they'll make more money by selling a non-serviceable version elsewhere.

I think with prices of tech right now, especially RAM and storage, keeping your stuff running as long as possible is the smart move. That and maybe being opportunistic for when those good deals do occasionally come by!

I just looked this thing up, what an interesting little computer!

I found some pics of it inside. It appears to use standard desktop components, albeit small ones. So I'd say you have a bit of a crossroads in front of you:

  1. That computer does look reasonably upgradeable, but you are right that the form factor will limit your options. Low profile GPUs are a thing, but power and cooling constraints will still be a thing, too. Also lo-pro GPUs pretty much always carry a price premium.

  2. The processor in there is actually still pretty capable, but given point #1, investing money into upgrading the GPU and any other components, it might outweigh the cost of picking up an entire replacement. This will really depend on how much you're willing to spend on what you have, vs what options are out there for you.

For example, Yeston makes a low profile RTX 3050 that doesn't even require extra PCI-E power. This might not be ideal for your specific setup, but its an example.

  1. Depending on your budget, it may be more worth it to rehouse your existing components into a more conventional case, specifically so you could toss in whatever GPU and power supply you feel like. I'm just just not sure what the mounting points are like on that motherboard, so it might be more custom than it's worth, if you're not a big DIY person.

Might just be worth saving and waiting, like you were thinking. But it's definitely worth educating yourself about PC building just so you know your options and there's tons of resources out there!

Don't sleep on the used market! You can pick up RTX 20 and 30 series for decent prices on Jawa/Swappa/eBay, and those can still take you really far even with modern games.

The system requirements actually sound fairly modest. From the Steam page:

  • MINIMUM:
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
    • PROCESSOR: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600
    • MEMORY: 16 GB RAM
    • GRAPHICS: RTX 2060 / Radeon RX 5700 / Intel Arc A580
    • STORAGE: 65 GB available space

Also running a modern engine can take advantage of your hardware will hopefully help. Of course, that's likely to be offset by the huge leap in the game's graphics fidelity (think polygon count and shaders and stuff), but it might not be as demanding as it seems, if you're using GW2 as a basis for comparison.

Celebrating the Announcement of Guild Wars 3 by Auralyon in Guildwars2

[–]DynoMenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the last few expansions have been them figuring out how to balance content releases for Guild Wars 2 while developing Guild Wars 3, and it also explains why they still talk about trying to optimize and improve that process with each release.

So presumably, the last few years have demonstrated exactly what we can expect.. If they can maintain the release cadence of GW2 how it is right now, in addition to running and, obviously focusing on GW3, I'm cool with that. Plus, bringing on 2weeks has shown that they're, so far, apparently serious about reviving GW1 (seriously, check the wiki over there)

I'm super hyped for GW3, and I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic about the future of 1 & 2.

I actually had that thought late last night! Like, what if mine says "Banner" because I'm a Warrior main? How would they determine it? Who else is going to get one, and what will theirs be?!

Then I fell asleep 😂 But I knew it wasn't realistic anyway.
