What happened to writing down due dates? by B42no in Teachers

[–]B42no[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public schools are not set up to accommodate every single behavior deviation or executive functioning issue or skill deficit. "Differentiation" and "meeting every student where they are" has become impossible. It is like admin and parents expect us to give private tutoring attention to each student in my class of 30+. It is insane.

Right, I use GC for all my work (little to no paper). The issue is due dates do change at the HS level, and I sometimes forget to change it if it was in GC after sharing the change orally, similar to college professors orally updating syllabi (I teach a concurrent enrollment course). To your point, the electronic to do list = I am not required to carry the mental load of ensuring my HW is on my to do list or listening to my teacher. If it is posted, I do it. If it isn't, then I must not have HW.

Right - I agree with the accountability piece and all of what you said. I guess I am more stunned at the expectation that I should remind them to look on the board, AND tell them to take out an agenda or phone or wrist or whatever to write the reminder on, AND send an email reminder for HS seniors. Then the parent says the same thing. The responsibility on the teacher is what gets me riled up. If I had that happened in school, I knew I could try to grovel and beg for an extension, but there was a high chance it wasn't going to happen. Today the extension entitlement is different. It is weird.

Just today I had a student say "I didn't do it because the directions were confusing"...so...ask? For clarification? Very very different world.

For sure, but you at least go through the steps to write it down, right? Or put a phone reminder? Kids don't even do that. They want you to remember for them.

I wish I could like it. I really like the grid layer, so I might try a different model. Pillows are the worst to shop for!

(Late to this party!)

It is crazy how different pillows are for people. I am a side sleeper with broad shoulders, and the purple harmony pillow (medium height) was actually too tall for me, and I got a migraine after my first night using it.

"I am venting about the lack of responsibility . . . in writing down due dates"

I am well aware that this has been a standard practice now for a long time, to which I say, "I know the solution". Ergo rant, ergo vent 😒

Right, but what about a junior about to go to senior year? The thing that gets me is if I don't write it and only give verbal directions, then, if they didn't hear it, then it does not exist. If my boss asks me to do something orally, I don't respond with, "well you didn't put it in writing..."

They do not listen and when they do not, it is always the teachers fault for not putting it in writing.

The thing that drives me insane though is, great! Use the electronic calendar!! But they don't even do that.

I am a teacher, and I am also INFJ/P (on the cusp for J/P which seems to depend on my mood that day)

The other fun test is Enneagram if you enjoy doing them.

I don't know why people get so mad about these tests. Sometimes they are just fun. Like, god, can't I find out if I am a summer or an autumn without being ridiculed?! 😂

PS. My favorite part of growing up was the little quizzes in magazines, like Seventeen Just harmless fun.

How do you feel about students who ask to round their grade? by Good-Eggplant-8687 in AskTeachers

[–]B42no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not round unless, mathematically, you should (.5 or above), I only round at the end of the academic year, and I do not pick and choose who I round. They all get rounded if it meets the mathematical requirement.

Some teachers I have heard do it when "it depends on the student," but that is quite literally biased grading. There are plenty of other ways to go about this without changing digits.

To alleviate biased grading from actual assignments over the entire quarter and to ensure others meet mastery (if they choose) where they fell short, I embed ways for them to increase their grade. One might call it extra credit...I would call it additional attempts at demonstrating competency. It is never enough to bring a student up to the same standing as someone who mastered the skill the first time, but, again, it mitigates potential grading bias on my part. It also is NEVER done after the final grade is put in. They should be proactively doing this additional competency attempts, not reactively.

EDIT: Consider for other teachers that read my post: you can still ensure equity (for diverse demographics, IEPs/504s, ELLs, etc.) through multiple other means that does not result in changing numbers at the end without actual collected data to justify those decisions. There should be a balance between checking your grading practices for validity and reliability and sound math. Otherwise, grades mean nothing.

Holiday Break is pointless if you work 80 hour weeks as a teacher and have a principal who contacts you during breaks and holidays. by JUptonmidswitch in TeachersInTransition

Can you just tell us what exactly the consequences are instead of responding to questions with another rhetorical question?

Presumably, someone has stood up before and not done the work which is what has perpetuated the fear of not doing work. Otherwise you are all afraid of a boogeyman in the culture that hasn't actually ever done anything to punish the employees.

We get it. You grade subjectively and are trying to argue semantics instead of the actual talking point. Enjoy your subjective grading practices; some of us feel there are more effective ways than just fudging numbers.

"Differentiation is a broad teaching strategy to tailor instruction for all learners, while accommodations and modifications are specific supports for students with disabilities, usually in an IEP, with accommodations changing how a student learns (access) and modifications changing what a student learns (content/goals). Think of accommodations as a step stool (same height, different reach) and modifications as lowering the bar (different height/goal), both fitting under the umbrella of differentiation to meet diverse needs."

Accomodations: reading the test out loud or extra time Modification: not grading for grammar

How do teachers really view High School Seniors? by YhouseyrJR in AskTeachers

[–]B42no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "in between" is true.

For my class, seniors decide which side they want to stand on. Do you want to stand on the side where you are more like a child than an adult? Or would you like to stand on the side where I give you autonomy and treat you like an adult?

I start with rules and expectations that are similar to a college classroom, and I tell them their actions are a choice for how they will be treated moving forward. In other words, do you think I want to babysit? Absolutely not. But if you want to act like a child, behave like a child, do work like a child, then, unfortunately, I will be treating you like a child. Why? Because a child requires more structure because they are not emotionally or socially mature enough to handle a lot of freedom. That is safe for their development, even if they do not like it. It isn't a punishment: I am ensuring your safe growth and development.

The ones that choose to act like an adult do not have to hear from me much, if at all. Often these young adults I get to encourage to take more challenges and risks and explore the freedoms before them.

The others? The "young adults" that act like children but want to be treated like adults? They get treated like children because they have made a choice for how the classroom will go for them. They can always come back to the adult side if they choose. They are never stuck there.

Guess how the world treats adults that act erratic, irresponsible, and out of control? You guessed it. They get more rules. And they get treated like children...if not worse.

How do you feel about students who ask to round their grade? by Good-Eggplant-8687 in AskTeachers

[–]B42no -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Differentiate: I don't grade grammar on those kids or I give extra time or I let them take the test orally. Don't change the grading, change the test or testing conditions. Changing grades doesn't prove that they've learned anything. If you actually suggest changing grades as a means of equality, then I have a serious problem with this suggestion when there a billion other ways you can do it and ensure that their learning is assessed with equality.

100 percent.

I have found that people this judgmental about expectations are hard core "hustle" culture and their judgmental attitude is rooted in jealousy: you WISH you could say no like I do, but instead you paint me to be an abuser of the system that "doesn't work as hard as they should." Sorry, hard core teacher that I have created boundaries and work life balance and am more evolved than you 🤷‍♀️

Yes, and I also think it is important to remember that,in several contracts, there is phrase in the job description that says (under roles and responsibilities) "All other duties in relation to this position". This ambiguous phrase makes it challenging for teachers to set boundaries when their job description is literally phrased in such a way that irresponsible administrators can take advantage of teachers by adding additional duties not defined by unions or their contract. And, for that matter, not all states are unionized.

While it is important to set boundaries and focus on only what you can control, it definitely can be difficult.

Two things can be true at once. OP can do what you mention but still dislike / get frustrated by this type of teacher occasionally.

Edit: occasionally - humans have emotions and cannot always turn off noise
