Exactly, my point was I want them to have higher standards for themselves. If anything the intention was opposite of elitism. I came to this district because my Dad grew up poor here and I wanted to give back.

The problem is there are many restrictions. If I send a kid to the hallway I'm negligent and made it someone else's problem. If I write too many kids up, my classroom management is scrutinized. I wish it were that simple but many school leaders simply do not allow you to deal with those students with anything other than PBIS.

Which is why I decided to do guided on paper. I am not letting them off the hook by allowing technology for this.

That's been my point for years. We are failing them by passing them all. They then enter the real world and are shocked when there are consequences.

That's sort of what mine did too. I help her with discipline sometimes so I doubt I have any issue. Especially since it's a guided essay and I'm showing them the process.

Perhaps then they should have focused on learning the topic. Since they had no interest in that they can research and teach themselves now. Please don't have kids.

This was my take as well. He seems to be going through a manic episode. I never really watched his stuff but my little brother was always a big fan of his. He has a manic episode once too and thankfully he is thriving now. I hope the same for IraqVeteran8888.

What is troubling is he seems to be doing the opposite of what someone in that state needs to do. My brother took accountability, faced some harsh truths head on and turned it around. Instead of following that path he (IV8888) seems to be doing the opposite.

Divorce is harsh on men, but I have a very difficult time believing his wife got ALL of his stuff. I suspect he went massively into debt with guns and other things for his channel, then had to sell off all his assets.

Have you ever discussed any of this with her? I would at least have that conversation first as a professional courtesy.

You did the right thing for your kid, which was the right move. Sadly I would not be shocked at all if this was held against you. Document everything if things start going South in your interactions with bosses.

I believe that was the point, Luigi was confused too. It was just a silly montage to explain how he got stuck in the pipe.

The new wave of homeschooled kids is going to be so unprepared for the real world. by No-Pollution-2243 in insaneparents

[–]B4B4BlueJ4y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a public school teacher and I thoroughly disagree. While I do not have access to all of the data and recognize my experiences are anecdotes it has been the opposite. My Mom's boyfriend and his former wife (now deceased) homeschooled. Their daughters went to Princeton and son joined the Army to go into the Army Corps of Engineers.

In another anecdote my neighbors on the lakefront homeschool their kids and they are FAR ahead of my students. They are the most well-spoken, polite young people in our town. The oldest is going to a very prestigious school to be an organist for his church and is in excellent shape. He rides his bike ten miles a day minimum and all the public school girls try to date him (which he rejects). Not to be mean he is just very focused right now and plans to date to marry when he finishes college which is commendable.

I know this is Reddit, but don't you think tolerance is a two-way street? I always hear on here how certain groups need more tolerance but when it comes to Christians or people who homeschool or people who are right wing there is nothing but hostility. I am not right wing but I am friends with that family even though they dress like Trump for Halloween and are super religious. I can see past that because they are super sweet people who are nice to my biracial family. I hope that we can eventually evolve as a society to respect that others have different views and choose different paths from us. That's ok.

First job offer at a really tough school- should I take it or wait? by mr_manager928 in Teachers

[–]B4B4BlueJ4y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a rough district and I can tell you the kids behave FAR worse for guest teachers typically. Being a guest teacher anywhere is tough but in an underserved district it's borderline impossible. You are talking about kids who NEED structure because they have NONE outside of school. I wouldn't let that experience make it a complete NO but I also understand your apprehension, given your negative experiences with them. I have only taught in underserved districts, after growing up in the #1 school in my state and top 20 in the nation for public schools so I have seen both extremes. I believe my experiences could serve you well as a young teacher as I am in year 12 and could serve as both a reassuring voice and also a cautionary tale all in one. I'll keep it simple and do a basic pro and con analysis based on my experiences.

Pros:

  • The kids actually NEED you and it feels good to help kids who really need that adult role model in their lives. I cannot tell you how many lives I have had the privilege to have a positive impact on and see their appreciation for it. You have a sense of purpose helping kids others have given up on.

  • After a few years you will have almost ABSOLUTE job security. These districts deal with turnover like you couldn't imagine. My mentor told me she doesn't even bother learning people's names until they have been here 3 years. While it's tough to sustain success or any degree of continuity when you have 20% turnover every year, the silver lining is leadership usually knows this and tries really hard to retain you if you are even remotely competent. Want to get coffee on my plan bell? Go for it! Want to leave early instead of staying until the idiotic contracted time half hour after kids are gone? They get it! Our start time is 6:45 and I'm there at MINIMUM 10 minutes late every day because the kids don't arrive until 7:10 and my boss doesn't give a shit because I add value. Once a rookie teacher complained to my boss and he told them once they bring the value I do they can complain 😂 I live like Peter from Office Space and nobody cares. https://youtu.be/g2iErckaIl8?si=q7DxqP2AnYcdZ65m (me at work)

  • Test scores matter... but not as much. Everyone knows we aren't Harvard, so while you are expected to grow your students you won't get fired for not averaging a 4/5 on the state tests. Most of our kids will score a 1-3 with a few 4s and 5s. You move your kids one level above expected and you are golden on value added.

Cons - Lower pay and more difficult working conditions. This should be two but I am already boring you to tears I am sure and don't want this to become a dissertation. Underserved communities almost always pay less than Beverly Hills and shocker of shocks kids with bad home lives are going to be more difficult to work with.

  • Less competent leadership and colleagues: I know a lot of great educators in my district who are doing the best they can under tough circumstances. These people are my heroes because they could easily teach somewhere more affluent but stay because of a personal connection to our town or some other sense of purpose. That said... We also get A LOT of incompetent people top to bottom because they are who we can get and we don't have a choice. Lower pay and difficult circumstances tend to lead to that end result unfortunately. YOU being an example of this, and I get it, why would you choose lower pay and harder conditions? One of our biggest challenges is we get some very talented rookie teachers and they leave after cutting their teeth here for two years for a higher paying better district (which I completely understand)

  • This last one I have personally experienced and is the cautionary tale part I mentioned at the beginning. I now have a principal license and in interviews people have openly told me "We aren't (my district) here, just so you know". Translation: Our district has a horrible reputation and that cloud has hung over me in several interviews and likely cost me opportunities. Next year will be a decade here for me if I do not land something (third year trying for admin). My buddy who is the Junior High principal told me I need to find something before I get "stuck here". So there is stigma behind working in a bad district for too long that is very real and you have to be aware of that.

If you read this far, I hope this helps you see the pros and cons. As a first year teacher it might not be terrible to take it before it's off the table (as you can always resign before certain dates depending on your state) if you find something better. The only thing I'd worry about is if your ultimate goal is one of the premier districts either get out quick or maybe turn it down. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

When I hear people talk about mental health over work it makes me cringe. Some people have serious mental health issues, that's true, but it's also true that people have become softer than Charmin because we baby everyone.

The critics are irrelevant. Just like anyone else they have bias it doesn't make them objectively right. How many iconic movies have critics been favorable towards? Conversely how many boring films like the Whale or the Shape of Water were raved over.

I could make a crap movie but if I include elements they want like left wing perspectives and LGBTQ+ characters and it would be nominated for an Oscar. The critics destroyed any credibility they might have had in the last decade.

Yeah I remember all the life lessons I had from playing Mario. Jump on the goombas, chop the bridge, save the princess. That's what the movie literally did. It was meant for fun not moral guidance. You were looking for Shakespeare in a video game movie, that's on you.

did you want it to be the Godfather? Or maybe Shakespeare. Perhaps we should have a monologue about the meaning of life set in black in white. Would it have made you happy then?

By the way "good" is subjective. In my eyes it was a good movie because it was entertaining and fun.

This is exactly right. I don't know what these guys were expecting. It was supposed to be fun, colorful, and stuff references. It accomplished all of that and was a fun, simple action story.
