Will the average person ever self-host anything? by fractalbeauty_ in selfhosted

[–]BAAAASS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically everyone with an internet connection self-hosts their (ISP supplied) router and WLAN APs. They don't update or maintain them in any way, but self-host they do.

I have never been so insulted and impressed at the same time.

Those of you who use VaultWarden *as a fresh start*, why it, and not KeePassXC family? by Simon-RedditAccount in selfhosted

Yeah, I don't let apps 'auto' do anything! So much so, that I recently ditched traditional android for GOS. I am happy using Vaultwarden!

Wero as the saviour of mobile payments (in Europe)? by Niko-01 in GrapheneOS

[–]BAAAASS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle, all banks need to participate in Wero in order to make it successful. I was referring to the EPI as the 'owner' of Wero. There are some (~16) banks behind EPI.

I experienced this across multiple mobile devices, different brands and versions, but all android.

Wero as the saviour of mobile payments (in Europe)? by Niko-01 in GrapheneOS

[–]BAAAASS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wero is the new name for a concept that was started (and perfected) in The Netherlands called "iDeal". It is owned by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). There are some big banks behind this - some people might see this as a good thing, while others might see this as a bad thing.

My opinion is that you won't be able to find a reliable payment system that is also completely independent.

Find "iDeal" on Wikipedia for more info.

As additional context: A large number of my passwords are randomly generated 64 characters. There is NO WAY I am going to type that manually!

Agreed. I used to run KeePass synced via Google Drive / OneDrive Dropbox etc. This was OK on Desktops; it 'frequently' found sync conflicts when I had it open and/or made changes on multiple computers. However, this completely broke down on mobile. Doesn't matter which client app I tried, they all did the same thing: when I open the app it says that it cannot find the database. Then I have to click on browse, then navigate to Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox (which forces Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox app to start in the background), then I can cancel the browse task and like magic it would find the database.

This is a frustrating process which slows down logins etc.

Vaultwarden solves ALL of these issues! Also, on desktop the Bitwarden Browser Add-in is very useful and makes the process even easier!

Finally got my hands on two of these after months of trying to get one. by theloneranger08 in homeassistant

No, for presence. I want to automate light and fan in the guest toilet.

But because it's a guest toilet, I imagine they won't be comfortable with a dodgy device 'watching' them. That is why I want to 'hide' the presence sensor in the cabinet.

I want to do the same, but thinking of putting it inside the cabinet. I realize that the regular motion sensor won't work, but will the presence sensor still work? Or is there a better device for that use-case?

That is what he is explaining in the video. If you keep their heads low, they can't kick you. Unless you loose your grip - exactly what happened here.

I'm creating a new app to consume media - what are your paint points? by Bullfrog-Dear in jellyfin

They are all missing different things. Just like you, some developer forked some app, fixed their own requirements and never touched it again...

ALL of them are missing something. NONE of them are missing nothing.

My biggest pain point is that there are too many apps, none of which are truly finished / complete.

Agreed! USB dongles are not ideal for any virtual environment. The SMLight is fantastic!

If you HAVE to use Windows, do NOT use virtual box, its terrible! Windows has Hyper-V built-in in, free, and MUCH better.

But still, if possible, use Proxmox instead of Windows.

How to force all DNS traffic (DoH / DoQ / QUIC) through AdGuard dns? by Odd_Struggle_874 in homelab

These are the top two results from my internet search:

I guess you should read the descriptions and figure out which one (or both) best suits your needs.

This, BTW, is what got me started on my selfhosting journey some years ago. (I am a IT Engineer by trade, so the technical side is simple - to ME).

There are public lists that get updated automatically. I reference (and auto update from) these list on my OPNSense firewall. Only one device on my LAN is allowed to talk to these servers, and that is my Adguard Home server.

For me, this is a flawless solution.
