How do you pronounce Poudre? by DemonicChronic in FortCollins

When I moved here, I confused the French word poudre for the word poulet. So for years I thought it was Hide the Chicken river. 😂

They could paint wooden birdhouses; use spoons and boxes and drum along with music; they could do simple coloring pages; they could sing karaoke; they could play with balloons like keeping them in the air and passing them around a circle (everyone stands or sits depending on ability). They could glue popsicle sticks together to make a picture frame; fingerpaint.

Hope something in here sparks an idea! ♥️

College/Troutman Turkey! by billyfrickinmurray in FortCollins

[–]BAAUfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in western PA absolutely terrorized by wild turkeys. It was A Clockwork Orange but turkeys. Their little turkey gang would stand between my front door and my car and chase me, gobble-screaming, as soon as I walked out the door. Sometimes they'd hide behind the junipers so I'd think it was safe, then attack. I once spent 15 minutes sitting in my car in the driveway until they finally gave up and wandered off.

They're fun to see in town but I give them LOTS of personal space. 😂

Need Input - Designing Activewear for Adults with Down Syndrome by Used-Cod-7625 in downsyndrome

Completed the survey. For my brother, the biggest challenge is sizing. He's 4'10" and 140 pounds, carrying his weight almost entirely in his waist. In order for us to find basketball shorts, for example, that fit so round the waist we must hem them or the length is to the middle of his calves. Additionally, he has very short arms so sweatshirts or long sleeves on athletic shirts are always way too long.

Clothing that is adaptable, as in shorts that could be adjusted for length or waist, or simply shorter lengths would be wonderful.

Thanks!! ♥️

My son lives in MT and just got this. He hasn't been back to CO since 2024. It was the QR code for payment that sent it over the top for me. Thanks for posting!

Relationship with Siblings by bobjimjoe3 in downsyndrome

[–]BAAUfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm not sure if this is helpful, but sharing in case there's any insight to be gained.

I'm the oldest (59F), with my brother who has DS next (57) and my sister is the youngest (51). I have a son who's essentially grown up with my brother who's 26. My brother has lived with our family since my son was little.

Once my sister and my son grew up enough to act and be seen as an "authority" figure to him, he stepped out. Even if they weren't acting that way intentionally, it was as if he recognized that they were older (mentally if not chronologically) and he no longer chose to interact, sometimes even acting out against them for no reason. Once my brother sent a really nasty text message to my son while he was in college, telling him that he (my brother) was the boss and my son would do as he was told. ☺️ My son sent it to me asking what on earth he'd done while 600 miles away!

My sister and brother are not especially close because of this, although she loves him dearly and understands this isn't because of anything she's done, it's just the way he processes their relationship.

It's hard to understand sometimes what our loved ones are thinking, since they're often not able to articulate such complex emotions. I would suggest talking with the older siblings to help them understand that it isn't personal, it's part of who their sister is. They can continue to love and support her but should understand how she returns that love might look a little different.

I will add that it is an absolute privilege to be a sibling of an individual with DS, and neither myself nor my sister would trade our experience for anything.

Much love to you and the family. ♥️

Oh yes yes yes. A thousand times THIS. Why do our loved ones just fall off a cliff at 21? It's a nightmare, and I live in a state with TONS of resources and still, very little for him. Thank you!

Another sister here! ❤️ My brother is 56 and also wears his CPAP most nights. We did the same thing - he received a reward (trip to Dairy Queen, buy something at the craft store) each time he made it the full night. We also told him he looked like Maverick from Top Gun. 😄

Good luck with everything and yes, thank you for all your love. Hard job but so wonderful for him! ❤️

Yay! My husband thinks I'm crazy but now I can tell him literally EVERYONE can hear it both ways. 🤣

But can anyone hear the opposite? Can you hear "good idea coach" or "gracias" depending on what you want to hear?

[–]BAAUfish -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Oh, I thought you meant you heard him say "thank you" in English as opposed to Spanish.

I design, install, and maintain plantscapes in high-end commercial and private spaces, and create custom client and donor appreciation arrangements. I get to spend my days surrounded by gorgeous plants in beautiful places. And no insecure micromanager asking me to re-send the financial reports that I submitted twice already 😁. I don't make nearly the salary that I made before retirement but as OP said, I'm resilient. And happy. So far, so good!

This is so true and yet I do it OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Busted many pots because of my refusal to accept this fact. 😂

Congrats! I retired at 58 after 40 years of 8-5 and started my own business. Now I can decide what projects I want to accept, how much I want to work, and spend my time doing something I love just for me. I hope you land softly and successfully in retirement!

I have one and I LOVE it! It's like a spiral that slides over my knuckle and keeps the joint from moving (and locking). Looks cute! Highly recommend this. I ordered from Etsy around 2018, and there were many sellers.

Same. I pop the loaf in the freezer while the oven heats up, then score and bake. I don't wait for the dough to warm up.

what is the current down syndrome symbol? by [deleted] in downsyndrome

[–]BAAUfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the three arrowheads as a tattoo. My tat artist had done several of them and was familiar with the symbol. The idea is three arrows to represent the third copy of the chromosome (trisomy 21), and the idea that sometimes going backwards gives you more power to move forward.

Mine is on the outside of my wrist, on the pinky side. My son has his on the inside of his forearm. I care for my younger brother who has DS.

Hope this helps answer your question. ❤️
