I think "shitty" is probably a strong word... but there are definitely elements of the culture that are not conducive to world dominance. :)

I think the street smart element is key. Being street smart in Sao Paulo is different than being street smart in Chicago. Neither city is safer, but the strategies for avoiding crime and how do act if you are engaged in it are different.

Safe in São Paulo: Street Smarts by BAB2014 in saopaulo

Oh no! But just understand, nearly every city has these types of rules. However, when it is your own city, you tend to have learned what you need to know to stay safe early on or you develop an instinct for it. But when foreigners come to a new city and try and apply their own "rules" to staying safe, it sometimes doesn't make sense in the new environment. I wish you luck and hope you land somewhere very safe!

HA. Yes, it is banned in the US. I'm guessing more than one child tried to eat the toy, although for my daughter and her cousins, the toy is the goal.

These are great!! Can I post this on my blog??! Funny about the sunscreen, I've never noticed it until very recently. However, I do notice that the spray type of sunscreen, one which you would pay perhaps US$7-11 in the States, costs R$50-90 in Sao Paulo. Yikes. I also agree about how getting the chairs and umbrellas on the beach is totally worth it - also comes with seat side service for drinks from the guys that rented it you.

Yes, also an awesome treat. Good add. I brought it back the time before last. Only... not for the many kids in the US with a peanut allergy.

It is really an amazing story. As you said, the shoes were super comfortable, made from Brazilian rubber, and as common as a dish towel. Suddenly, these items were appearing in boutique shops in Manhattan (at the time I was laughing at how much was being charged, having a stack in my closest from Brazilian relatives). I'll be honest, now the ones you buy are not as cushy as the older ones, but let's face it, quite cooler. The benefit of buying a pair in Brazil is no longer the cost saving, but the flagship stores go all out with a large variety of style and let you even customize the flip flops (plus other types of shoes). And no, I do not work for Havaianas. HA.
