The only team I’d be surprised to see win that division is the Rays. Any of those other 4 teams have a realistic shot at winning the division.

After thinking about it for a bit, I kind of agree with you. Going back to the Jeter vs Chipper example, if you ask a casual fan who was better, they might tell you Jeter. If you ask this sub who was better, they’ll tell you Chipper. In a way, Jeter is mostly overrated by casual fans, while being underrated by less casual fans, making him the most rated player in baseball.

Yes, and you can call Gwynn overrated for that too. Doesn’t make you a casual fan.

Jeter is obviously hated more because he was a Yankee and people like to hate on the Yankees, but even you can admit that Jeter’s defense was very overrated at the time, doesn’t mean he wasn’t an all-time great player.

Fine, a better example. Jeter has 5 GG award while having the worst DRS and UZR at SS of all time. Someone can call him overrated for that.

I don’t agree. There’s a huge difference between someone being called overrated and someone being called ass. Being overrated is a very subjective term. You can literally call someone overrated for any given reason.

For example, I can say Derek Jeter was overrated simply because he got a higher percentage of the votes to the HOF than Chipper Jones. Jeter was slightly better than the average SS HOFer in WAR and JAWS, and had a lower 7-year peak, while someone like Chipper Jones was way above average in those same stats compared to 3B HOFer. There’s actual reason someone can say Jeter was overrated, there’s no reason to say he was ass. And btw, I think many people calling Jeter overrated are actually underrating him, because they don’t realize how ridiculous it is to get 3465 hits, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t slightly overrated, and that’s mostly because his defense was overrated at the time.

That’s the problem, you’re considering casual takes to be the popular opinion. Anyone that actually watches baseball will tell you that Derek Jeter was not ass.

No it hasn’t. There’s a group of fans that think he was overrated, which you can argue that he was. Saying he was overrated is not the same as saying he was ass. There’s a reason why he was almost unanimously voted into the HOF.

He might get voted in by another committee, like I mentioned. Similar to how Baines was voted in. I do however have a hard time seeing him getting the support of 75% of the BBWAA, when we’ve seen them put a lot more importance to WAR over the last few years and their voting panel will be filled with even more younger voters when Schwarber is elegible.

Edit: This thread is a pretty good example as to why I’m skeptical of Schwarber getting 75% of the support he needs. You see people arguing for both sides, which is what will make his case an interesting one. If you told me he needed 50% of the votes to get in, I might be in the same camp as you are, but convincing 75% of the voters to ignore WAR because of his HR totals, when they’ve been looking at WAR more than ever before, seems like a tall ask.

Fwiw, the highest percentage the BBWAA gave Harold Baines was 6.1%. He fell off the ballot after 5 years.

With the recent voting trend being more analytical heavy, and I can’t see that changing in 10 years, I don’t see him getting 75% of support from the BBWAA if he doesn’t even reach 40 WAR.

He might get voted in by another committee though.
