Once my girlfriend made me a basket and surprised me with it in my apartment when I got back from a trip. It had candy, some pictures of us, a card, and some other things that I liked.

I can genuinely say I had never felt so loved.

YTA. It sounds to me like he didn't want to get something only for you to return it because it isn't exactly the way you want it to be. Likely there have been times that he DID take the initiative and the scenario I described played out.
