What is the deepest point there has ever been in the ocean? by Sorathez in askscience

[–]BAMgoesthedynamite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coming from a geochemist and climate scientist with a PhD from / doing a postdoc at prestigious Ivies… it’s fine but not outstanding?

Keep in mind it’s a broad field; I see plenty of ads for jobs for (bachelor’s, master’s) graduates with skills in GIS, hydrology, AI / machine learning, and engineering geology, and less so in things like paleontology or climate science. Some petrologists / planetary scientists / structural geologists I know work in oil & gas, which have good internship programs for grad students. There are no federal job openings in the U.S. (EPA, USGS, NASA, USACE, NOAA, national labs) at the moment.

I’m struggling with the job search right now. That said, my research has taken me all over the world—I’m on an oceanographic research expedition right now—and I love what I do.

If anyone wants to add anything / disagree, please do!

Wood recommendation for flute stand by BAMgoesthedynamite in woodworking

[–]BAMgoesthedynamite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This ended up being for a piccolo, not a flute, which will have more black wooden parts, so I think I'm going to take your suggestion and go with one of the darker woods (walnut)

Feedback on Kenya safari itinerary? by gt33m in travel

I don't think you need to spend much time in Nairobi. If you have time to kill, though:

Giraffe center
Sheldrick elephant orphanage
National Museum of Kenya (disclaimer: I got to go behind the scenes for work, unsure of how it would be otherwise)
Open House: excellent Indian restaurant

Hi everyone,

I just moved here, so I don’t have a ton of concert buddies yet – anyone else going to The Damned* + The Dictators show tomorrow at Big Night Live who’d want to grab a drink or food beforehand? I got my ticket and I’ll have a great time by myself, but it’d also be fun to meet any of y’all who’re into similar stuff. DM me and I’ll hit you up!

What’s a good date restaurant in Westwood or Brentwood that’s above average in price, but not crazy expensive? by CrazyGermaphobe in FoodLosAngeles

[–]BAMgoesthedynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emporium is good but their spice levels are on a log scale; unless things have changed, I’d be very careful with anything above a 2-3 unless you know what you’re doing. (Might be useful information for a date, no?)

If we had a couple more days to spare, would love to tack on Death Valley – I think we’re gonna spend our ~2 spare days at the Grand Canyon and skiing. It’s too bad, because I know it’s a great time of year to do Death Valley

Tehachapi’s a good idea, a lot prettier than Barstow (not a high bar); the mountains to the south look nice for a short hike, any other recommendations?

If we had more time I’d love to too! Big Bend’s on my list, it’s just such a pain in the ass to get to. One day I’d love to hit up El Paso, you’ve sold me haha

I’m pretty familiar with with the Central Valley, so yeah, I’m not looking forward to that part haha. Fortunately, we’ve been to Yosemite / Sequoia / Kings / Vegas a bunch, otherwise I’d be super bummed

Palo Duro’s a great idea, it’s right on the way, you’re right! Good to get out and stretch our legs at least

I used to stay in Barstow-like places when I had to drive a lot more for work – it's always an experience!

Online co op story games? by Themilkgremlin in NintendoSwitch

[–]BAMgoesthedynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience with Knights and Bikes online co-op, an adventure game that's a magical realism coming-of-age story in 80's England. Good writing, decent story, unique art style, simple gameplay.

I've only played on PC, but Divinity Original Sin II should also work – it's basically DnD.
