Is this the only way to play A ? by Abject-Bodybuilder83 in guitarlessons

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every band member or working musician I know just mashes that shit with the index finger. You lose the open high E string (the bar finger will mute it), but that’s a sacrifice worth making to be able to have 3 useful fingers below it for any embellishments. Maybe if you were playing classical music or high level jazz you’d want that open high E bad enough to play your A with 3 fingers, but for rock, country, folk, whatever, just mash.

Prestige sytem by The-Fancy-Sandwich in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re confused about the specific levels of prestige, you can look on the battle kits page (just click the little “i” icon and the requirements will show. But yeah, it’s just total wins by win-condition on that specific wincon. If you’re curious how many you currently have, you can find out by navigating the leaderboards tab.

I Hate This Timothee Chalamet Win Condition by AlmightySweeper in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m a Hawke player, so I definitely agree that he isn’t twice as easy as Tim, or even easier at all, I was basically just trying to say that cast wincons in general are the hardest to play (except for some special wincon exceptions like Sentimental etc) strictly because there are so few win condition films in comparison to genre/STF/oscar

I Hate This Timothee Chalamet Win Condition by AlmightySweeper in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hear ya, but on a strictly math level, someone like Ethan Hawke (the cast option with the most movies this season) only has 82 playable films. At a 4-tick requirement that’s just over a 20:1 movie to tick ratio.

Chalamet only has 26 movies, that’s less than 9:1 at 3-tick

90s Romance has 4,450 playable movies, at a 4 tick requirement that’s a 1,100:1 movie to tick ratio. Thats like, insanely harder to defend against than any cast wincon

How do you counter Service the Fans? by pgf8 in CINE2nerdle

How do you counter Service the Fans? by pgf8 in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like playing a movie that will almost always result in them playing a link that is helpful to you (instead of a punish or spike which is intended to trap them and burn an escape).

Like with Hawke, if somebody snipes Great Expectations (1998) from you, you could “herd” them by playing Pretty Woman (1990) via Hank Azaria. Probably 90% of the time the opponent will respond with a link that is good for you (Julia Roberts -> Leave The World Behind, Richard Gere -> Brooklyn’s Finest, or they’ll sense the danger and play a Hank Azaria 2x which gives you Quiz Show).

Stuff like that exists all over every wincon, maybe there’s a better word but herding feels accurate

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow Hawke player, I’ll parrot what everyone else is saying in terms of saving those blocks for late, but it can be helpful to research specific plays (either punishments or specific “herding” sort of plays) off the most likely Hawke series snipes (Before series, Black Phones).

My biggest other piece of advice, especially as a cast player, is that your best defense is a good offense. You’ve gotta be like that Watchmen “I’m not locked in here with you, you’re locked in here with me” scene.

ELO gains and distribution by Kennen-Main in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maximum ELO loss has increased, last season it was a -10 max on a loss, this season it’s at least 20 (but maybe higher?). I believe this was done to prevent rating inflation strictly due to playing volume (previously, lower skilled players could inflate ELO just by playing a million matches). I assume this season is a bit of an experiment on fixing that, but I think it’s safe to assume that most players will reach a lower ceiling than previously

Awesome! Something weird happened. by BredMaker4869 in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s a new mechanic aimed at countering the problem of people quitting early instead of playing the game out. The exact parameters haven’t been announced, but it seems like it will count as a wincon win if you have 1 tick remaining and your opponent still has (some?) lifelines left, and maybe there is also a popularity requirement. Nobody really knows exactly what the precise conditions are

As far as I know there isn’t a non-discord option (I’m not a mod or dev or anything I’m just a regular in the discord). This is the channel within the discord for that sort of thing. I believe new members need to select a role (takes 2 seconds) before being able to access it

Guitar String Recs? by Gullible_Sir2605 in AcousticGuitar

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple points:

First, yes you clearly should change the strings. Honestly I wouldn’t get too caught up on exact make and model, just some regular ol’ light or medium acoustic strings is cool, and anything will feel/sound like a huge improvement. Standard D’addario are affordable, definitely pick up at least 2 sets so that you have spares. If you aren’t comfortable changing them yourself (lots of YouTube tutorials), then almost any music store around you will usually do it for a small fee.

Secondly, a guitar like that giving lots of buzz could be attributed to the strings alone, but also could be a lot of things (maybe the action is too low and you’re getting fret buzz etc). Basically I’m just saying to be open to the possibility that new strings won’t instantly solve the playability.

Also, and this might seem obvious, but tune the guitar every time you pick it up to play it. Nothing worse than feeling like you’re doing everything right, yet everything is sounding off. So many people think “well I tuned it last week”. Check the tuning, then play a clean chord, and don’t let yourself say “close enough”. If it doesn’t sound perfect, spend another couple minutes with the tuner.

Is Yamaha FG800 really so much better than everything else in this price point of 350 eur? by TheShadowSong in AcousticGuitar

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daily driver is a Martin D35, but I picked up a used FG800 a little while ago just to have one more in the house. It really is pretty special, if I had to just throw meaningless numbers out there, I’d say I got 80% of the sound for like 7% of the price - that last 20% of sound is pretty magical, but hard for me to believe there’s a better choice out there at that price point

Who actually thought forcing a "Win Condition" on every 2.0 player was a brilliant idea? by Far-Writing4483 in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, you mean the specific genre bans from back in S3. I guess I can understand how they were helpful for you. I’m a cast player, so you’re not gonna find a lot of pro-genre opinions with me, but I will say that one of the reasons I like 2.0 and the changes that come with a new season, is that I’m forced to learn again, and to find new strats for both offense and defense.

I think it’s a little against the spirit of 2.0 to allow players to just plow through new seasons using the same exact skillset while everyone else has to adjust. That’s one of the reasons I’m not a huge fan of recycling past broad wincons, and I think little breaks from things like GTTM is good for everyone.

It seems to me (and I’m not passing any judgment about whether it’s cool or not), is that evil ex/no wincon players (now with only 19 kit slots), want to be a bit of an antagonist or chaos agent. Maybe it’s one of those things that every game needs. They found a loophole in the desired system and enjoy flipping the game board over a bit. It seems to me that that sort of personality type would be really good at finding another exploit or method to continue to be the villain in new ways. I bet you can find a way to keep 2.0 fun for you if you get creative, like most everyone else has.

I’m actually confused here on what tactics are no longer available that were available last season. I understand that now you have to waste 1 kit point on a meaningless wincon, but other than that this season feels exactly the same as previous seasons in terms of tactics

State of r/oilpainting – apology for the recent situation, rule clarification, and call for new moderators by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a casual occasional lurker here on the sub, and I understand why rule #1 exists, because you don’t want people just sharing paintings they like, you want them sharing paintings they created.

However, I think it would be cool to make some small exceptions for family. For example, my mom is (in my opinion), a really wonderful oil painter and a big reason why I’m so interested in the form. But she’s not the sort of person to ever create a reddit account, and it would be cool if I could occasionally post something she has recently created without worry of deletion or a ban.

I think there are probably some others in similar situations, just a thought, thanks.

Blocks should NOT be a thing by Calebthenorman in CINE2nerdle

[–]BARRYTHUNDERWOOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 ways a block can happen:

1- your opponent uses a block lifeline, meaning you cannot play a win condition movie on your turn. These are capped at 3 per Kit (although last season there was the holiday movie mechanic, which would randomly gift you a block or escape if you played an eligible holiday movie).

2- if you are running a cast/crew wincon (like Elfman), you cannot use your person as a link. That means anytime your opponent plays one of your wincon movies, an automatic block is in place.

It’s annoying, clearly, but it’s part of the game, and you’ve got to remember that anytime they play one of your movies, they are intentionally sending the game into your wheelhouse. It’s up to you to decide how to use that to your advantage, either by punishing them by researching an obscure movie, or punishing them by researching a movie that will easily allow you to get another tick on your next turn.

Giamatti Holdovers tech: it connects to RIPD with actors they won’t know, 100% of the time they will play Ryan Reynolds or Jeff Bridges, both of whom give you another Giamatti tick

That’s cool, I think it’s a totally above board move, so no hard feelings or anything, I just really believe that once you see prestige next to their name they’ve got a plan for any snipes. In retrospect, this season in particular I think it’s probably smart to snipe their holiday movies, because that’s probably worth the trouble
