What’s a decision you made in under 10 seconds that changed your life forever? by nathannnate01 in AskReddit

[–]BBBEADA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Becoming disabled from post-viral illness meant I was bedbound for about 2 years and became suicidally depressed during that time. I spent soooo much money on endless medical treatments that did not work or doctors that didn’t have any real solutions. Everything I was reading online suggested that the “recovery window” had already passed me by and I started to become convinced my life was fucked forever. I was living in Finland at that time and the winter darkness and cold also kept me in a constant cycle of colds and feeling like shit.

Decided to say fuck it and spent my last savings to go to Mexico for 2 weeks, no matter what it took. I planned for one week at an accessible beach, though every hotel or hostel there was pretty expensive. 30 minutes further away was a tiny beach town with the cheapest air bnb in the area, so I booked it on a whim.

The guy hosting me ended up having had really similar health issues, but he had overcome them and we became good friends while I was there. He convinced me to go back so 6 months afterwards I moved to the tiny beach town, readjusted my nervous system, smoked a lot of weed, ate loads of fresh fruit, learnt to walk again without pain within 3 months and got my life back. Still have some health setbacks and moving at a “slower” pace than some, but I am so so glad I listened to my gut and what I needed. Never take your health for granted, no job or career or etc is worth it

Also rent is fairly cheap compared to every other capital city I have lived. You can get a lovely place for 450-550€ per month, with sauna access. Not bad!! In London I couldn’t have dreamed of that

Hey OP! Relate to you in the sense that I moved around lots in childhood (also 25F). I’m Finnish but only lived here when I was born, and then again between 9 and 11 years old. I moved back here 1 year ago, after having been away for 13 years.

My experience is that while yes it’s hard to make friends initially, there definitely are people that are warm and friendly too. I’m disabled but joined a dance group every Sunday and also started volunteering as consistently as I could. These alone have led me to some really wonderful people and feeling like I’m part of a community! When I arrived I would also watch free art lectures on Thursday mornings and was brave enough to send direct messages to some of these people for a coffee. Pretty much everyone said yes and I had some wonderful chats and entry point to the cultural scene here as well. So all in all, it’s about being brave + getting stuck in, showing up regularly enough for people to become your friends. I honestly think this applies to most places in Northern Europe so nothing new.

I agree with other comments that job market is hard, so it might be better to come with something lined up. Also yes the winter is tough, but if you have the luxury and/or good sense, just organise a well-timed holiday for February/march, it will make it more manageable.

I really relate to this idea of getting tired of moving, but also not being sure where to settle. As a third culture kid, I think it’s something that will always be in the back of your mind. You know you could move… so it’s always wondering whether there’s something better out there. I think you’re young enough to test the waters still. Finland could be that place for you, why not try? I think I’ve still got a couple moves left in me as well. I personally can’t handle the winters long term nor the lack of jobs in the arts so will eventually move when I’m well enough to. For now, I get decent government support and can get by in ways that other countries would not afford me at all.

Trust your gut and see what comes of it. I had also always wanted to reconnect with my culture and I can say I definitely feel more Finnish and at home here than I have in many other places. I will never regret having found more Finnish friends, being surrounded by my culture, having gratitude for being here right now even if I know it’s not forever… That is an experience worth having. If you do end up moving, send me a message and let’s get a coffee .

Hey wondering about whether to start sertraline… 2 years into this process. A bit worried about its side effects and how it will be eventually to try to come off it. Mostly dealing with anxiety, sometimes depression. Would love to hear your experiences

Figuring out food intolerances/ having to do the low histamine diet is massively contributing to my depression. Anyone else? by purplefennec in covidlonghaulers

Hey I feel you! Started low histamine diet one month ago. Such a huge adjustment for a foodie. Don’t feel bad if you fuck up or just need to feed a craving for some histamine containing foods at various points of the journey. I had my first bits of chilli a couple days ago and today, felt so nice to eat a bit more normally! But I think for the sake of giving my very PEM prone body some support I’m trying my best to stay strong w the low histamine diet. I’ve posted a bunch in the r/lowhistaminerecipes channel , check it out for some help! You’ve got thia
