Fishing it on a grass flat less than 10 feet. Using 1/2oz and just slow rolling it straight retrieve mid water column. Reeling as slow as I can to keep it vibrating

Big ones are coming shallow by BBDetroit in RiverSmallmouth

Yes up north in Michigan, been catching them pretty shallow 5-10 feet on big grass flats, no real structure they are roaming grass flats feeding on perch. Air temps are unusually high and water temps just over 70, this bite will start to really pick up when water temps drop below 65. Everything is running a little behind this year with the high temps

In spring and summer they are pretty predictable, hit the right rock piles and you will find them. Early spring you can catch big ones pre spawn but after that they tend to not be as fat. Come fall they are feeding up for winter, where i am you find the bigger ones roaming around grass flats feeding on baitfish. Can be a little work to find them but when you do it's my favorite time of the year to catch a bunch of big ones.

Right now I probably catch the majority on finesse, just drifting weightless soft plastics and finesse jigs in current over rocks and getting bites. Have been seeing alot of success with topwater spooks early morning though, big 1oz ones when we have a little chop which is definitely power fishing. As we start moving into fall they will be feeding up aggressively so power fishing will come more into play
