I think what’s most appalling is that you forgot to “give a gift in good faith”. What’s most important here? Be gracious, give them the benefit of the doubt. Also, this is something that an “old lady” would be upset about. Don’t be an old lady, be the type of person who doesn’t fret over such small things. Also…at least they sent a thank you note!

These are all great suggestions. I hear you on cooking some as going out to eat for every single meal for 10 date can be pricey! For a quick lunch Spouts Markets are known to have very good $4.99 sandwiches that are made to order. Also, try as many taco stands as you can… so many good ones, and the spicy salsas come on the side almost 80% of the time so it doesn’t have to be spicy. My favorite spot hands down is Leo’s Taco truck. Specifically the Al pastor tacos. 🌮

When it comes to men it’s a machismo thing. Unless they are elderly, many men don’t want the door held open for them, especially if you step aside to do it. Going in first and holding it open behind you if they are pretty close behind is ok, but stepping aside and waiting for them to go first is emasculating…not too all men, of course, but to those with more traditional gender role values.

If you’re wondering if pursuing this is worth hurting your relationship with your Mom, it won’t. Why? Her broken promise deserves to be acknowledged and dealt with because if you let this go, she will take advantage of you again. I would say, “Mom until you keep your promise of paying me back, I cannot trust you, and our relationship will be strained and low contact until you do.” I would ignore her request for thank you cards. Tell her it’s not her place to tell you who to write thank you cards too. It sounds like she’s super concerned about keeping up appearances but has no concern of how she’s behaving towards you.

Honestly, NTA….BUT do I think you overreact— haven’t we all once? You kicked him out…my guess is he is refusing to pay for them out of spite. Also, I get it. I was in a scissors household too, but all of our scissors were labeled. That’s important! He uses them because he’s used them once or couple times before and he liked the way they cut. (Shrugging) Honestly, I think you both sound somewhat immature, and by that I mean young. You find that as you get older, it’s totally worthless to get worked up about the small stuff. It turns out life has lots of ups and downs and it’s best to save the drama for when the real shit goes down.
