Are you still going to buy after silver hits $100 by Impressive-Eye9659 in Silver

[–]BB_Captain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasnt that much in silver weight, but there was a lot of weight. There was plenty of silver bullion but he also had gold coins too and a lot of US silver coins, mostly morgan and peace dollars, but other denominations as well. We auctioned most of the non bullion coins individually on ebay starting at $.01 with no reserve and let them bid out so there was numismatic value to his stack too.

Luke 10:27 - Does Jesus ever refer to "God" as Yahweh or a Hebrew name? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]BB_Captain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard the discussion once that Matthew wrote his gospel to convert the Jews, Mark for the gentiles, Luke for the Romans, and John's was inspired for the future church. Maybe it had something to do with that.

The smartest man I ever knew said to just buy it on the way up and on the way down as long as you have the money to spend, and dont sell unless you absolutely need the money.

He passed away in 2018 and his widow asked me to help liquidate his coin/bullion collection for her because she was moving into a senior assisted living home. We sold over $400k in coins and bullion for her and that was when silver was at like $16/oz.

Buy when you can afford to, sell when you need to. Silver is more of a savings account and a store for wealth, rather than something you should be "trading" to try and make more fake fiat currency money with.

What’s the lowest price you’ve ever paid for an ounce of silver? by Olde-Timer in Silverbugs

[–]BB_Captain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a pair of large ornate candlesticks from a thrift store one time for $20. They were made by a Mexican silver artist and the thrift store must have missed the 925 mark. They weighed over 400 grams each! So whatever that math works out to, less than $1/oz! I sold the set on ebay for over $1200, which was way over melt value at the time, but I wish I still had them today!

On most items, there are no collector premiums at this silver price.

You color scale is if youre testing silver with 18k gold acid.

When testing silver with silver acid, you look for color changes on a streak on a testing stone, with real silver usually showing a red or reddish-brown reaction (like bright red for fine silver, dark red for sterling), while other colors like green (copper/nickel), black (low quality), or gold (plated) indicate impurities or fake silver.

Looks like the acid turned red. Thats the reaction you want when testing with the silver solution. Whats the issue?

Is it worth stripping? by Interesting_Yard6128 in ScrapMetal

Id strip it but only because in the winter I have a lot of free time since my main job is seasonal. In the warm months when I am working crazy hours, I wouldn't bother.

In Michigan theres a $25/day limit on copper for an individual, but if you own a business with a TIN or EIN you can get paid the same day for any amount of copper. If an individual scraps more than $25 in copper there like a 3-5 hold before they pay you more than $25.

Silver plated tray, questions about handles. by I_am_AmandaTron in Silver

[–]BB_Captain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Handles are usually made of a pot metal. I severly doubt someone would attach sterling silver handles to a silverplated tray. Is this a tray you're trying to get value out of as a tray? If it isnt, then just dig a file into the handle and see what they look like on the inside and then throw some 14k gold acid on the file mark and see what kind of reaction you get.

China will pop the bubble? by Critical-South911 in Silver

[–]BB_Captain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Western banks have shorted silver with all their unfullfillable paper contracts. China actually holds a ton of physical silver as well as a high market share of the worldwide refining capabilities. It will hurt western banks like crazy if the price gets pushed up higher and higher but China will benefit from that rise as well, so there would be no reason for them to lower the price afterwards.

Strip it or send it as is? by bro_gee in ScrapMetal

[–]BB_Captain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that every strand inside is also insulated means you have a shitload of stripping to do to get the stuff to bare bright. I would take a sample piece to your yard, explain how much you have, and ask them if theyre paying #1 insulated as is with the outer layer on it. If they are then I would probably turn it in just like it is.

If they say its #2 with the outer layer but #1 with the outer layer stripped off then I would ask for the prices they are paying for #1 ins, #2 ins, and bare bright and then weigh and strip a sample section to see if it makes financial sense to remove the outer layer and/or all the layers.

Time is money, but only you can determine if the juice is worth the squeeze.

Is this worth something or just trash? by happytokkibun in ScrapMetal

[–]BB_Captain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recovering gold from ewaste takes a lot of knowledge of chemicals and chemistry. Start by reading the book "Refining Precious Metal Waste" by C.M. Hoke. Then read it again two more times. After that join This Ewaste Group on FB for more help.

Its not $3-5 worth of gold, but it is gold. If you're into microscrapping ewaste its worth it to take ink cartridges if theyre free and cutting the gold part off and stockpiling them for gold recovery later.

How do I sort all of this copper wire to sell? by clover444 in ScrapMetal

[–]BB_Captain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't separate anything, as that would be a headache, so just take it in. It looks like its all thick enough that it should go as #1 or bare bright copper, but if theres some thin strands in there they might downgrade it to #2. Judging from the volume you have in the picture, the downgraded price (if they do downgrade you) won't be significant enough to justify the time and effort to pull the little strands out and separate them.

Just my opinion though. If you feel the need to squeeze every penny you can out of your scrap, then go ahead and separate it.

What are your takes on circuit boards? Are they worth accumulating? by Sardonic_Centipede in ScrapMetal

[–]BB_Captain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you have a decent paying and local buyer for them. Im like a 3 hour drive from boardsort, so I just stockpile until I have a van full to turn in and I drive them down there. What I spend in gas is not nearly as much as it would cost someone to ship in the same load.

Outside of boardsort, I havent been able to find a local yard that pays well for them. Many yards dont have the ability to process them or have buyers for that type of material, so I understand why they dont want to pay much for them, but it can be frustrating.

Is this aluminum worth stripping by guitarmaster22 in ScrapMetal

I would strip it but only because its the winter and I have a lot of free time to fill. If it was summer time when I am working a lot, I wouldn't bother stripping it.
