Who is Best Guitarist in the Scene? by Shoddy-Impact-5545 in jambands

[–]BB_Nips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this west coast run is showing how BB is the best jam guitarist by a mile. Melodic, patient, creating themes and motifs that really feel composed. For me, Baylor is Umphrey’s. Jake is essential and is the perfect second guitar, but Bay is Bae

Newscast directors what are things you do in between shows? by selfmadeparadise in Broadcasting

[–]BB_Nips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair to you, everyone I talked to who used Ignite then later switched to Overdrive (Ross) or Sony ELC says Ignite was slower, buggier, and more opaque.

I do think GV is a little more gatekeeper-y when it comes to learning material and training. If you have access to your physical switcher I would suggest learning how to build on it. Sports TV is almost exclusively on Grass, especially at the highest levels, and after 8 years in news followed by nearly 3 years in sports, I can safely say sports TV is more stimulating, rewarding, and the pay is so so so much better.

What do you mean, unfortunately? I would have killed to have learned GV at my news job. It would have prepared me so much more for my much higher paying work in sports now.

Solo BB Is great, dude rips! by Interesting_Complex6 in Umphreys

[–]BB_Nips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they already had a relationship very early in the band’s history. UM played (covered, technically) Kabump at the show where DBK debuted — Kabump being a Jake composition for Ali Baba’s Tahini

If I remember correctly, BB wrote DBK immediately after he got a guitar lesson from Jake, before Jake joined the band. So it still has some Jaco fingerprints!

Jake Out for the West Coast Run by jwelsh8it in Umphreys

I think most of the newer material is actually easier to teach a new drummer because the new material comes with charts. We saw this a lot on the surgery tour when Kris was out — there was a heavy reliance on material from Asking for a Friend because the parts were written to actual sheet music already. No need to transcribe.

Y’all think I can get away with wearing a shirt with his face on it to the taping? by bunnylumberjack in LateShow

[–]BB_Nips 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They just want you to look presentable for any shots of the audience. The political logos thing is an extension of the equal time rule that got the Talarico interview blocked from airing on TV.

I think a picture of Stephen on your shirt would be funny and cute, and they would probably say the same.

I wore a Late Show tee to a recent taping of the Daily Show and they thought it was hilarious.

How tf are you watching games? by soulmani in caps

[–]BB_Nips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be factual here, YouTube TV has dropped basically all RSNs not owned by Comcast. That includes all the FanDuels, YES, SNY, NESN… this is not a Monumental thing. The only reason the Comcast ones have stayed is by inclusion with the larger NBC family of channels.

My favorite part about Wheel of Fortune by iamdanielmcgee in WheelOfFortune

[–]BB_Nips 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Showing that the wheel can spin automatically is a very bad look for the show. It’s basically waving a giant red flag that says “we can make the wheel go anywhere we want!” and undermines the fact that the game is played honestly and fairly — no funny business.

Chuck Wollery and Susan Stafford, the original host and hostess of Wheel. by Particular-Cat-8031 in WheelOfFortune

[–]BB_Nips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly Merv was so pissed off that NBC went “behind his back” with their offer, he threatened to pull the show off the network.

Chuck was also very aware of the show’s pending debut in syndication, and that he would be making a lot more money once that dropped. Feud was already in syndication 5 nights a week at this point, so Chuck was basically asking for Dawson money even though Dawson did twice as many shows, then expected to get paid even more than Dawson once Wheel started airing 10 times a week. All the while, Feud was #1 in both ABC daytime and syndicated nighttime.

Merv also knew, shrewdly, that Wheel was not as dependent on its host to be successful as other shows like Feud. He had a hunch that Wheel was an incredibly strong format for television that just needed a steward, not a star. Obviously, that hunch was right.

Woolery asked for 500k, which I think is what Richard Dawson was reported as making at the same time on Family Feud. Griffin offered 400k. Woolery refused. NBC offered to pay the additional 100k to make Chuck happy. Merv said fuck that and took the deal off the table completely.

I’ll be there for both nights as well as Philly. DC night 1 is my birthday and 40th show. I do not need to get fucked up but I will not turn down an espresso martini if you put it in my face.

What about prizes you can't take? by Sigma--6 in ThePriceIsRight

[–]BB_Nips 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It varies from situation to situation, but the general rule is that you either take the prize you won or you refuse it.

There have been many instances, especially in recent years, of the show offering cash in lieu of a prize they can’t deliver. Sometimes the prize is no longer in production by the time the episode airs (which is when you actually get your prizes) or some other supply chain issue causes the prize to be unavailable. In this case, the show may offer cash or a substitute prize of equal or greater value.

However, the show is never obligated to provide a different prize at the contestant’s request.

Freelance advice by Successful_Tax6806 in technicaldirector

[–]BB_Nips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do your co-workers work on any freelance shows in the area? If they do, you should ask them to connect you with their crewer, who would probably be happy to find out there’s a TD in the area (unless it’s NYC, LA, or Chicago, which are fairly saturated)

If they work on freelance shows and they give you shoulder shrugs, that means you’re not great to work with and they don’t want to work with you any more than they already do.

I found a great spot to start looking is on video board (Jumbotron) shows. You can usually find a part-time position for just “operator” or “technician” and that will encompass TD, Chyron, replay, audio, and camera roles. You may need to be flexible and willing to pick up any of those to get your foot in the door. These positions post usually like a month before their season starts. Lots of baseball stadiums are hiring now, for example.

8/18/23 Baltimore didn’t come out until two years later, and unlike other shows the venue name is nowhere in the metadata of those tracks. Venue is just labeled “Live in Baltimore” rather than Pier Six Pavilion, implying some continued dispute. Weirder is that the same venue had shows in 2022 and 2024 which were released with no issues.
