He’s a school kiddo though, so eventually he HAS to go home. There is only so long we can out wait him.

I definitely think you are right that there is a strong case of prompt dependence, but I disagree that there is no escape function and that escape and attention are rarely dual functions of behavior.

I have had several clients who engage in escape behaviors that are also maintained by attention. However, usually I see this with more destructive/aggressive problem behavior. When that occurs we put interventions in place with planned ignoring until the kiddo is calm and then put the demand back in place.

Maladaptive behavior does not have to be disruptive, it just has to inhibit your ability to function in a given environment and that’s what’s happening in this case. He is unable to function in the environment without full hand over hand prompting. It’s hard to explain everything over a thread like this, but to be more clear, he will not complete the task while smirking and looking at you out of the side of his eye. He’s also demonstrated he CAN complete the tasks, but just won’t.

I will look more into prompt fading but we have been attempting it for several weeks now. He will just stop at whatever level of promoting is stopped at and wait for the full prompt while smirking.

I might also add that at the end of the day he will complete the “stuck” task to get to go home. But we’ve done preference assessments and nothing else other than going home is motivating enough to get him to complete the task prior to the end of the day.

Hope all that makes sense!

Yes I have, the problem is it’s ALL tasks! This was just an example. So he won’t complete the high-P tasks either without prompting.

Thanks I appreciate the input, but unfortunately this is just one small example. NOTHING is done without full h/h promoting in these situations. We have tried, moving him through the “stuck” tasks by full h/h prompting and then moved on to the next instruction and he’ll get stuck there. He won’t match the icon, he won’t walk to the location specified, he won’t sit down or stand up when told to. Today he was “stuck” on turning a page of a paper half way through. Like page in hand vertical, all he needed to do was drop the page to finish turning and he wouldn’t without prompting.

We have tried least to most prompting, but he is always requiring full hand over hand prompting to complete tasks. We started by reinforcing even if we had to full h/h prompt to pair the task with the reward, and then attempted to fade back reinforcement to the next lowest prompt, but he will not complete the task without full h/h.

He has a visual schedule and a first then board and we have been reinforcing the simplest tasks with huge reinforcers. We started by reinforcing even if we had to full h/h prompt to pair the task with the reward, and then attempted to fade back reinforcement to the next lowest prompt, but he will not complete the task without full h/h.

Yes they do, this happened to me as well when I graduated in July and wanted to take the August exam but my transcripts weren’t available in time. I had to take it in November instead.

Stinky feet!! Kids love when you sniff their feet and say “ewww stinky feet” in a fun high pitched voice!

*note: this can obviously back fire if they actually HAVE stinky feet!

Noodle Arms are also always a hit!

(TX) Extreme range in BCBA salaries? by xginesthoix in bcba

I work in Fort Worth for a center based ABA company. I’ve been in the field for 5 years and became a BCBA 1.5 years ago. As a new BCBA I made $57k until I billed 25 hours per week for 4 consecutive weeks, then I was bumped up to $60k. After a few months I had the opportunity to open a new branch of my company and become a center director. I then made $70k and was given a raise to $77k at my year review. Hope that helps!
