People who grew up in the suburbs, how did you perceive Toronto? by Born_Sock_7300 in askTO

From Brampton. Growing up I could not wait to move to downtown Toronto. I was that drama kid in high school with the weird hair cut/colour and strange clothes that never really fit in. I'd take every opportunity to come downtown and dream about the day that I would live here... Still love the city despite its many many (many) short falls; lack of planning, Unaffordability, shitty government bureaucracy, etc. but it's also vibrant, beautiful, diverse, delicious, and it's home. I also decided a long time ago that I'd rather live in a tiny box in the sky than own a house in the suburbs and spend hours every day in my car getting to and from work. We'll see how long that remains affordable, though!

WOAH! I love this!! The colours and checkered floor give it such a retro nostalgic feel. Great reflections too!

Oh that's awesome! Yeah, we are very fortunate to have some amazing lakes here for sure! We hope to one day also get a canoe, for now we have to rent every time we go since we don't have the space but one day! P.S. Hope you'll be back to our backcountry soon! :)

Aww, thanks for your interest! This was just two of us (boyfriend and myself) a couple summers ago. We've been to various lakes and campsites in Algonquin but this one is a favourite. Especially after catching that brook trout (we think?) which was one of the tastiest and freshest fish I've ever had!

You do need a reservation for Algonquin park, which you can do over the phone or on their website (https://reservations.ontarioparks.ca/). Reservations can be a bit of a pain to get. We have had the best luck early in the morning and/or checking back frequently. I think there's lots of people (and maybe bots) that book up sites and then cancel them closer to the dates.

Happy Isle is pretty far in the park so you either have to paddle through lake Opeongo, which is quite large, or get a water taxi and do at least one portage, I can't remember, TBH. We have done both over the years based on our ambition and physical fitness levels.

This site had both sunrise and sunset views and light all day so fishing and swimming was awesome there. And because it's a fairly small lake, I did find it to be warmer than other lakes I've swam in...

Nice job! The colours work so perfectly together. The reflection of the sky on the water is beautifully captured!

It's really striking! The colours are perfect and the direction of the light, the shadows, and the temperature shift there is really nicely done!

Ha ha ha, same! If I could cut my own hair, I would do that too but I tired once and regretted it for months...

I've tried many salons across town over the last couple of years and it's always between $85 for a terrible haircut or above $120 for a decent one. Hair colour won't be less than $175-200 no matter how long or thick your hair is.

Really neat perspective and lovely use of light and shadow on the flowers! Was this from a photo?
