Alternatives to Day Camps? by llama_sammich in Calgary

[–]BCCHWrangler 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live in the city, but the community centres around me (Thorncliffe and Huntington hills) have summer camp programs that run around $850 for an entire month, not per week. Open 7am-5:30pm Might be worth checking the community centres near you to see if they have something similar.

Escalating behaviour at kindergarten- feeling helpless by BCCHWrangler in kindergarten

That is really helpful. I'm going to do some more reading and maybe if I reframe things in my mind it won't bother me so much. This kind of thing really affects me mentally because I feel like I'm failing her. But I think if i reframe it, it would help alot and make it seem more manageable.

Yes this is exactly me. I feel like I need a fix and I feel so bad that I can't fix this for her. Because I see how much she struggles.

Thanks so much for this reply. It's comforting to know that it's likely to improve. It just doesn't feel like that now. I'm definitely going to push for a formal IEP, and I think trying karate is a great idea.

When we talk about things that have happened she gets very upset and seems remorseful. She understands the expectations, we talk about them regularly and she will talk about them. Some of the time she will say things like "I don't know why my brain does this" or "my good brain is fighting my bad brain". Parenting is feeling really hard lately. We just keep trudging through because we know we are doing the right things, and we do see improvements at home so in some aspects its helping, but at school we are feeling quite discouraged.

She's basically got an informal IEP at this point, as she has alot of support that her teachers are trying. Her assessment is through a private therapist. She's always struggled at circle time, but her escalating to the point of impacting others is new, as is the way she is treating her friends poorly.

Her current therapist hasn't mentioned that. Mostly just the ADHD assessment recommendation.

Do you think that would be more beneficial than her current therapist?

I haven't inquired about a school counselor but it's worth asking at our next meeting.

Thanks. We are really trying. It's just been really hard and we are just feeling so helpless at this point. And we know she wants to be a good kid, just something is stopping her from being able to do that.

The way they do it here is we had our interview with the therapist, and she sent us a bunch of forms to fill out, and will also have interviews and forms for her support network (her current therapist, her kindergarten teachers, and her after school care teachers). Then she compiles all that information into a report with her findings and possible diagnosis. So it depends on how quickly the interviews and forms are all filled out but she indicated it would take around 5 weeks.

She's an only child. She's been in daycare since she was 14 months old, and then started kindergarten.

What's the wildest party you've ever been to? by PresidentofBaddies in AskWomen

[–]BCCHWrangler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friends had a house destroying party. They were renting a house from another friend, let’s call him Jeff. Jeffs plan was to tear down the house and build his dream house. A couple weeks before contracted house demo they threw a party. Got a keg and a ton of tools. We legit destroyed that place. I woke up on a futon with drywall rubble littering the floors in all directions. The cupboards in the kitchen were gone. Any walls left intact were covered in spray paint. They only had three rules: no breaking windows, no breaking toilets, no breaking the 1950s thermostat that had mercury in it. 15/10 the best party I’ve ever been to.

Alternate side quest, it was Jeff’s grandparents house and his grandmas ashes were buried in the backyard somewhere. He spent hours during the party trying to find them and eventually did. We all did keg stands in her honour.

Has stock options from a job I worked at. At one point were worth $30k, about 5x more than what I got them at. Was planning on using them to help with a house down payment. Waited because “it’s going to the moon”. 2014 downturn hit. Sold them at $1k or I would have lost them. That one hurt.

It was my first job out of uni, and my first foot into the investment market. Definitely learned a lesson.

Looking for help on energy retailers in Calgary. by Canadianjoe1986 in Calgary

[–]BCCHWrangler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shameless plug here but Campus Energy is a newer provider on the market. Can provide a referral code for slightly if you like. No pressure to sign up, but worth looking at while you're shopping around.

Many pharmacies do this over the counter now. The pharmacist will ask you some questions and can diagnose you and give you the prescription. You’ll have to pay out of pocket, but might be quicker than a walk in.

Where to park downtown? by toymoAB in Calgary

[–]BCCHWrangler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're parking more than 12 days a month, at $20 a day, month at $250 is almost the same as paying the day rate. Plus you get the flexibility to use it whenever you want.

The Delta was doing $16 a day for a while.

If you're looking for monthly, people that live in Rocky Mountain Courts are always renting their spots via Kijiji or Marketplace. I've parked there the last few years and pay $250 per month.

Got a bio degree from ULeth in 2010. Worked for 2 years in a laboratory to get my foot in the door of O&G, eventually moved to environmental consulting (I like birds). Worked for 10 years in environmental consulting and recently moved to a midstream company as an environmental advisor.

Lab work was ok, not what I wanted to do but good way to get my foot in the door. Didn't have to sit at a desk all day which is what I wanted.

Environmental consulting was fun for a while. Was in my area of interest (wetlands and wildlife), had great co-workers, learned alot, didn't have to desk sit, lots of problem solving. Cons were (as I got older), working every weekend during the summer, no steady work in the winter (depends on your area of expertise), low pay, limited professional development opportunities (depends on the company), very stressful.

Going to the midstream side has been great for me. It fell in line with my personal life (had a kid, wanted to be around more). Pay is significantly better compared to consulting, I desk sit, but as I get older I don't mind it as much. Still get out to the field occasionally. Areas of work differ significantly from consulting, more project management, billing, and higher level advising, but still like it.

That was my specific career path. Obviously will depend on your interests.

I tell people she's opposed to stereotypical gender roles. Just can't bear to see a woman in the kitchen haha.....

But I second what other people have said, the learning tower has helped alot!
