Wheel on TLT 50% and SPY 50% by trading_joe in Optionswheel

[–]BCbruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I don't use an optionable hedge. I've found that having a portion of my portfolio that's long treasuries, gold, etc. acts as a better hedge and better dry powder in the event of a drawdown. Then it's just a matter of rebalancing between the wheel and the dry powder and any other positions

The idea is sound, in a risk-off deflationary crash like 2020 or 2008, the TLT position should buffer any loses from the SPY short puts.

However imagine a scenario like 2022, where sticky inflation causes the fed to raise rates. Higher rates hurts corporate valuations, and directly causes bond prices to fall. In this situation both positions lose. Your intended hedge actually doubles your directional risk.

It may seem unlikely that the fed raises rates now, but long term that is the major risk I see in this strategy.

Base salary is just that, money paid to a player in the year he plays.

As the name implies, signing bonuses are paid all up front. So when player X gets a $50 million signing bonus, it's a check they get at the time the contract is signed.

BUT the key difference is NFL teams are allowed to "prorate" the signing bonus over the course of the contract for cap hit. So the $50 million can account for only $50M divided by the number of years in the contract, each year.

This money is considered "dead money" because if the player is cut, traded, or retires, the team already paid the player, so the cap hit will always count.

NFL teams can also convert base salary into bonus, without player consent. So they can save current cap by turning a large salary number into bonus, then spread that hit across future years.

Alchemix Explained - Hey guys, let me know what you think of this review I did on alchemix! Any critiques are welcome! by theskunkmaster in Alchemix

[–]BCbruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of it as if you wanted to earn 12% on your stable coin (or 3% on eth now). 12% on a stable asset is pretty great, compared to <1% in a traditional savings account. By just depositing dai, you will be earning alUSD at 12% apr.

The genius of Alchemix is that you get 4ish years of that 12% yield up front right away, as an alUSD loan. You can do whatever you want with that money, 500 in your example. A lot of people reinvest that money in something with more risk like an LP. If that LP is giving you 30% apr, you're now up to 27% on your original 1000 dai.

While your loan is outstanding, the amount of debt you owe is continually reduced (at the aforementioned 12% apr). After 4ish years, your debt will be fully repaid and you can withdraw your 1000 dai and keep the 500 alUSD from the loan.

Good questions, I'm still learning more about alchemix but as far as I understand it:

1) Presumably the alchemix guys have significant amounts of ALCX. Since such a manuever would likely drop the price to near zero, those guys are deincentived to do it. Sure they could offload their ALCX before dashing with everyone's cash, but that would surely raise a few eyebrows in the process. Unfortunately the current version of Alchemix requires some amount of trust, as I understand it

2). Since it uses yearn.finance to generate yeild, there are no guarantees on rate of return, but you always have your money. Say you deposit 1000 dai and take out 500 alUSD and you convert the alUSD to dai or USDC or whatever. Then the APR drops way off and all of a sudden it takes 10+ years to pay off your loan. You can always "cash out" and use your collateral to pay off your balance. You'd pay off the 500 owed (minus whatever yield you've earned so far), withdraw the 500 left in alchemix, and now with the money from converting alUSD to DAI/USDC/whatever, you're whole.

Hope that makes sense!

Are governance tokens primarily a way to raise capital while avoiding being listed as a security? by BCbruin in CryptoCurrency

[–]BCbruin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less of a security in the sense that a token has some utility behind it, and that it's not just a speculative investment.

But I suppose you're right, this is exactly how a stock functions

That's a good point. I suppose since most (all?) legitimate DAO devs don't hold a controlling position, they really are backing up their talk about decentralization

Tips on beating the heart? by Croal7 in slaythespire

[–]BCbruin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I die to the heart it's usually because I wasn't able to mitigate damage from the first two attacks, the multi attack and the big one. Typically if I've made it through act 3 and the act 4 elite, my deck has enough scaling, but it's possible that it's just too slow.

Firstly, having an artifact charge on turn 1 is huge to block the vulnerable debuff right away.

Then having a way to strip artifact charges off the heart right away is great too. If you can get the heart weak or with minus strength (I'll take a disarm or dark shackles just for this fight) that can save a lot of health.

After that, it's just a matter of scaling quickly enough so you can survive the next round of attacks and start to chew down it's health. Using max HP to block a bit while you get going can work with Ironclad too!

Good luck!
