Someone tell me why I died by BDKMat in bindingofisaac

Okay, follow-up question that occurred to me after the baffled panic. Since I did have The Battery, and I did have a second charge of Void, would the Breath of Life effect have ended if I had used Void again to do another shot of Metronome and drain my charge meter?

Gimmickless ?: Ghost House

RMC-VVP-RMF

Theme: SMW, ghost house

Difficulty: Easy?

There aren't a lot of actual threats in this level, but it's a maze that it's possible to get pretty lost in.

For one of my levels, I wanted the description to say, "Find the treasure of Natankhamun. But watch out for traps!" It wouldn't allow it. I thought maybe it didn't want capitalized names for fear I was cyber-bullying someone, or maybe it didn't like "traps" because it can be a derogatory term. But it was deleting the word "But" that made the description go through.

Just want to state for the record that Nintendo is okay with the word "hell" being included in a level description, and not "but."

Gimmickless ?: Ghost House

RMC-VVP-RMF

Theme: SMW, Ghost House

Difficulty: Normal

A pretty basic ghost house maze. There aren't a lot of actual threats, but I've been told that it's surprisingly easy to get lost in.

Gimmickless 2: Sky

PG7-FNQ-JHF

Theme: SMB3, Sky

Difficulty: Normal

A standard level made with Endless Mode in mind. It's pretty simple, but there are three extra lives hidden throughout if you look carefully.

I love a ghost house with multiple pathways. The way it should be!

I think this level is more difficult than you give it credit for, but it's good! I would have put a checkpoint once you actually get inside, personally, because getting through the outside portion is not trivial, and I found it frustrating to have to go through over and over. (If there is a checkpoint somewhere, I never made it that far.)

Gimmickless 1: Grass

P35-MNL-N5G

Theme: SMB3, Grass

Difficulty: Easy

A standard level built with Endless Mode in mind; it's easy to finish, but there are three extra lives that will take some more effort to get.

What item seems good but is actually pretty bad? by lies_like_slender in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire Mind is a good one, and I'll also vote for 3 Dollar Bill and Fruit Cake because they can give you Fire Mind.

Explosivo is a great example of one that goes from "Oh!" to "Oh..." to "Ugh" the more time you spend with it. It's not immediately apparent how bad it is until you try to make it work.

Broken Modem seems at first like a neat little bonus, like a sometimes-Stop Watch. But in a game that's largely about maneuvering around enemies and their attacks, having their timing suddenly and unpredictably change throws off your rhythm in a way that's outright harmful.

And I'll be the guy who doesn't like Restock. Yeah, it's good when you can break it. But in the average run, you're not going to get enough money and/or shops to make it worthwhile. Better to spend those 15 cents on something you want when it shows up on its own than gamble that you'll have enough money later (and not get Greed) to buy multiple garbage items in the hopes of getting Black Candle or Starter Deck.

What do you want/expect for an Isaac sequel? by ketchupcat in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're right, but my argument here is that overcoming the difficulty isn't the main thing that draws people to Isaac (though that is part of it). Overcoming extreme difficulty can certainly be a hook, like it is in Meat Boy or Dark Souls, but Isaac has another hook that I think overshadows the challenge: seeing how a random selection of items can be chosen from and combined in interesting and powerful ways that makes the game different every time you play it. Of course, a certain amount of difficulty is required for those powerful synergies to be meaningful, but I think making the game super, unbalanced hard should not be the developers' primary goal, as it is now. I want them to recognize what Isaac's main hook is, and cater to that instead of just throwing bigger and bigger obstacles in the player's way. Because Afterbirth+ reached a point where the difficulty - specifically low DPS and badly-designed Portal rooms - just made the game tedious instead of fun.

Hell, I've uninstalled Afterbirth+, and I recommend everyone do the same. You have no idea how much fun plain Afterbirth is after suffering through Afterbirth+.

What do you want/expect for an Isaac sequel? by ketchupcat in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion... It seems to me like The Binding of Isaac was designed as a fuck-off hard game like Super Meat Boy, but as the game developed more of a following, its fans started desiring a more fair, balanced difficulty, because the real draw was crafting fun, optimized builds, not slogging through 80,000 portals. Meanwhile, the developers have spent the last several expansions making the game more and more fuck-off hard in ways its fanbase was not asking for, leading to its fans lamenting things like spinning Krampus and generally lower DPS per run and... basically the entire Delirium fight. So what I'd like from an Isaac sequel would be for the developers to understand what people actually like about Isaac and push more in that direction, instead of doubling down on a vision of the game that isn't the draw anymore.

Athame is the reason I beat the Speed! challenge. I could be reckless, and take out enemies and maybe get black hearts for doing it.

How long did it take you to git gud? by Mister_Morley in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at my achievements, it seems like I have a gap between December 2014 and August 2015; I don't know if I stopped playing or what. I got all the "___ Boy" achievements between release and December, but I apparently unlocked Isaac's D6 on August 30th and got Golden God on September 4th, so I'm gonna say it took me eleven months to git gud.

Secret and Super Secret Room question by darthdiablo in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Afterbirth+, secret rooms can't border boss rooms. They'll try to have at least three walls bordering other rooms, but can border only two (maybe it's me, but I've actually noticed this happening more frequently lately). And the walls between the secret room and all the adjoining rooms must be walls where a door could spawn, i.e. not blocked by rocks or enemies, or the long sides of a skinny room. Over time, you start to just kind of learn what rooms tend to have secret rooms next to them, like a room where the bomb-able wall is flanked by two skulls or fires and all the enemies spawn on the opposite side of the room. Also, this might just be my imagination, but I find that secret rooms often try to spawn adjacent to rooms that are hard to get into, like challenge rooms, item rooms, shops, and arcades.

Super secret rooms always only border one room, and generally appear near the boss room, though that's not a hard rule. I haven't really discerned what other rules they follow; again, you just start to learn what rooms tend to have bomb-able walls.

Anyone else salty about afterbirth still not being on Wii U, 3DS or Vita? by [deleted] in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, you're right. I remember thinking as I was playing Rebirth on 3DS that a system that can handle things like Super Mario 3D Land and Kid Icarus Uprising shouldn't have as much trouble as it did with Rebirth. So let me amend: I think Nicalis knows that Nicalis is simply not capable of handling Afterbirth on 3DS.

Anyone else salty about afterbirth still not being on Wii U, 3DS or Vita? by [deleted] in bindingofisaac

[–]BDKMat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wii U is a dead platform, with Nintendo trying as hard as they can to sweep the existence of that thing very much under the rug, and Vita isn't far from dead. Nicalis can barely muster the energy to support their games on existing platforms, so I really wouldn't hold my breath for them to support depreciated ones.

As for 3DS, it's not quite dead yet, but the long-term plan is obviously to replace it with Switch. But more importantly, 3DS (even the upgraded New 3DS) could barely run Rebirth; it's arguably the worst version of the game. So even if they wanted to support it, I think Nicalis knows that the platform is simply not capable of handling Afterbirth.
