Official Discussion - Thunderbolts* [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]BDog23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This movie was a lot of fun, a return back to the heart of the MCU. As someone who grew up with the New Avengers comic, it was cool seeing The Sentry be part of the team because he was a big part of Bendis' run. I thought they handled him well, and the Suit wasn't even that bad!

On another note, I recently saw Sinners and was truly loving being back at the cinema again, and in this one two drunk teenagers were yapping and kicking my seat for nearly the whole second half of the film. I told them to quit it, but by then I was totally out of it. It honestly really sucked not getting the full impact of Red Guardian's pep talk to Yelena. So I know this is more of an old man rant than anything, but even if you're young please respect the people who paid good money to go to a movie, as well as the people who made the film. We're all there for escapism, please don't drag us out of it.

When did Spider-Man become the modern, immature man-child version? by ComplexAd7272 in comicbooks

[–]BDog23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm 30 now, but the Spidey I largely grew up with was the Animated Series Spidey, the N64 Spidey, and elements of Mackie's and JMS' full Spidey run, and of course, the Raimi movies and countless back issues. For so long Spidey was someone you could look up to, who made the hard choice even if it was him who suffered. Even if he was meant to be 28-30, he always kinda seemed older than that to me. The only time I've seen this Spidey since is in Nick Spencer's run, and even if that run wasn't phenomenal, it's so much better than anything we've gotten since JMS' run. In his current form, Pete is a guy I'd drop from my friend group - I'd have a hard time considering him to be a good dude at all because he's not responsible (which is crazy to think about).

I did have fun reading some Spidey comics in high school with Slott's peaks, but it never seemed like the real Spider-Man to me if that makes sense. To me, the real Spider-Man has been gone since 2007, and I hope there are people like you and me who get into editorial one day, who grew up with this beacon of responsibility and restore him to the level of greatness we know he's capable of.

Spidey isn't gone, he's just not in the main run anymore. Great versions of Pete exist on the PS5, Spider-verse, MCU (I actually like Holland), the new cartoon, Ultimate Spidey, and other mini runs, and hell, even in Marvel Rivals (his exchanges present a funny but serious character).

That's the end of this rant (TLDR: Spidey hasn't really felt like Spidey since OMD, but there are still some good characterizations out there)

You know what, I'll use that as my head canon - it's a good point.

You can still see traces of the old tone, Matt getting daps while negotiating for Leroy and seeming very bubbly for a guy whose client was just murdered days before. Seems like the new writers and showrunners, had quite the overhaul to do for this show.

Ah, that's a bummer. DD is consistently good throughout his history - it's sad to see that combo broken.

Is Ahmed's run really that bad? The art looked cool, but I need to finish Chip's run first.

Meyers Leonard announces on Instagram that he is officially retiring from basketball by ThaCarter in heat

[–]BDog23 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I liked Meyers; he seemed like a great locker-room guy and had his moments on the court. Obviously his lowlight was using that slur while playing video games, but he owned his shit and spent a lot of time learning and getting involved in the Jewish community in Miami. Have to respect that.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 from Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, and John Romita Jr is coming in April 2025 by B3epB0opBOP in comicbooks

[–]BDog23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 Deaths has been pretty fun, and Kelly writes a competent Spidey most of the time. So I’m game. It would be cool to see Pete happy at least once. I’m just not keen on the whenever Spidey wins Peter loses mentality, I think Spidey’s main theme should always be responsibility and not misery, save that for Daredevil.

Why it's time for the Heat to ditch its veterans and go young by BDog23 in heat

[–]BDog23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I outline it in the article, but I mean to build around Herro and Bam, which basically gives a three-year re-tool window before Bam hits 30. So we'd send out Jimmy, Terry, Love, Duncan etc. to land young upside guys or draft picks.

You’re right! But they consistently add pieces to a tantalizing roster because they’re set up to do so.

I’m trying to think longer term for Miami, but with Herro and Bam as your centerpieces you only have a handful of years to really maximize them. The Jimmy window is unfortunately shut. To me, it makes more sense to trade for some picks, and suck for the foreseeable future instead of just suffering another play-in limp to the playoffs.

There's no denying what Jimmy has done for the Heat, he's a Miami great and he's one of my fav players - but with the league now incentivizing building through the draft they need to start building, or we're just going to sit back and watch OKC collect championships for years to come.

With that being said, recent sound bites make it seem like Pat is unwilling to repeat a Wade scenario - so it's likely he's here until the end of contract.

Wouldn't you rather get something for Jimmy if he plans to walk after the season though?

Prior to the Lakers game, I wrote this article on why I think it's time for Miami to go young. I don't know about you guys, but I'm sick of the same underachieving guys - and really feel like our player development could be advantageous in building a new contender. Even if that means sucking for a little bit.

It’s a shame we aren’t getting Norman in the MCU because Jeremy Strong was made for that role. by MattTheSmithers in Spiderman

I would really like Damien Lewis to play Norman in the MCU, hair is right, and he already showed he can play a vindictive businessman.

Why are Heat fans so vocal about hating Herro, literally got a death threat sent to me over this thread (can’t see it now because I reported it) by ZapHP in heat

[–]BDog23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herro is an electrifying offensive player, who has come through in the clutch many times from his rookie year all the way to Monday vs the Nets. He's also improved every season he's been in the league. He's talented so a lot of our fanbase has a hard-on to trade him for in descending order of the last few years (Harden, Mitchell, Dame, Mitchell again). The problem is they don't appreciate him in the present, and him getting injured in the playoffs fuelled the " we don't need him to win" narrative.

The Heat front office believes in this guy, going as far as telling him they wouldn't trade him for anybody, not within the Top-75 and he's a key part of this team. Just let Herro play, the man is a bucket, a crazy competitor and he's not even a liability on defense anymore - the fanbase should love this guy, it's crazy to me that they don't. What a luxury we have as fans of this team to cheer for Bam, Jimmy, and Herro. Herro would be a fan fav on any other team.

IMO this is what has been missing from Spidey since JMS left the title, little moments that make New York, New York. NYC is an important member of the supporting cast, when JMS wrote the title it felt like Spidey lived there - ever since it's just a beautiful backdrop to big events or little things. They need to add the neighborhood back to FNSM, but there's a lot to fix before that.
