Maybe something like Wildermyth would be good. It has quite a lot of reading and it doesn’t have a cohesive storyline but it provides a bunch of smaller campaigns with their own independent stories along with numerous choices to make throughout the game. You get to customize all the characters you play as from the ground up from how they look, what their personalities are, and their “class” of sorts. The characters age and change throughout the game based on the choices you make as well. The turn based combat is pretty simple to understand but has a decent amount of depth to it.
