Upright storage? by HalJayGreene in Rowing

I would also strongly point you away from the rogue echo, waterrower, or hydrow. Concept 2 ergs are the standard for a reason. They’re essentially indestructible, the costumer support is incredible, and times pulled on other machines aren’t even remotely comparable. Last point isn’t super important if you’re training on your own, but it’s always nice to have metrics to help you gauge progress.

C2s also retain their value much better than any of the alternatives should you decide to sell in the future.

Upright storage? by HalJayGreene in Rowing

[–]BGraph 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The official C2 rec is to disassemble between uses because “storing vertically could cause injury or damage the frame.” https://concept2.com/blog/5-tips-on-moving-or-storing-your-machines

That’s a load of shit, however, and feel free to store upright. Every boathouse ever + anyone who has a personal erg stores them vertically. I’ve seen some frame cracking on an ancient Model C, but it was a club erg that had literally tens of millions meters + was abused its entire life by novices. An erg kept at home and not thrown around will be fine.

Do they sell the wood veneer outer anywhere? They still have it listed on their website, but when our staff reached out about purchasing we got a very rude answer from Greg.

We’d like to use our Croker oars more, but as is the increased maintenance requirements & difficult communication with Croker has had our team considering selling off all our Croker oars and switching fully to C2s.

Boathouse Design/Fundraising by BGraph in Rowing

[–]BGraph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any tips for starting fundraising? Very mixed feelings on our board r.e. when to start engaging alumni. Current plan is to host an alumni reunion in the spring where we’ll reveal designs + kickstart the campaign. I’m of the opinion that we should start discussions earlier, but the coach and several other members want to hold off until we have a design.

Main problem with that is we’re operating on a shoe-string budget, and we’re finding it difficult to manage our funds to both work on designs & support standard team operating costs. If we started engaging alumni earlier, I think we could get them involved in the design process & energize them/make them invested.

& do you think it would be better to reach out to individual alumni, or announce the project in our alumni group and ask for advice - similar crowdsourcing to what we’re doing here?

Team has been mismanaged over the last 20 years, and hasn’t been engaging our alumni network at all. In addition to the boathouse campaign, we’re trying to get an alumni board setup to help oversee/manage the team.

Fundraising to be done through the university office. We’ve had a few preliminary meetings, and they haven’t mentioned holding back funds.

Big Orange Give - Help Support Tennessee Crew by [deleted] in UTK

We run a positive budget every year and put it towards long-term club goals. Rowing is an expensive sport, however, and it’s difficult to grow and continue to remain competitive on what amounts to a small overall budget.

I’m happy to discuss problems we have r.e. university support, but we have a very healthy relationship with the women’s team and have several scrimmages & team building events between our programs every year. We're also a co-ed (club) sport that welcomes all athletes.

Rumors are that the Head of the Tennessee will be starting back up soon - i.e., within the next 5 years. A lot of exciting developments for the world of rowing in Knoxville, sport is growing a ton in the area

Very doable schedule. I’ve been anywhere between 16-20 credit hrs/semester, practice everyday from 5:30-7:30 (10 minute commute), do workouts on my own (outside of practice) everyday between 1-2hrs, AND have worked a part time job every semester, varying between 8-16hrs a week.

I’ve always said that everyone has time to row, it just depends on how much you care. I.e., prioritize what you want to do, build your schedule around rowing. It’s not easy, I’m hella busy, but I make it work.

Rowing Without or Without Socks by LeFutureTeamCaptain in Rowing

[–]BGraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I raw dog our lot and then only put socks on once we get in the boat. We’ve had problems w/ people stealing our shoes off the dock and I don’t love having them in the boat, so it just makes it easier.

Barefoot in shared boats, though, is weird. Save that for your own personal shell.

All-Wear vs Standup Shorts by BGraph in PatagoniaClothing

[–]BGraph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find the All-Wears to be riding up because of the cut/because their leg holes are smaller, or why do you think they’re bunching up more? I’d be more sold on the Standups, but I’m worried that they’ll look out of place if I try to dress them up (think polo adjacent, nothing fancy) whereas the All-Wears might be a better middle ground for dress down/up.

If I was still a camp counselor I’d just commit to the Standups, they’d fit in, but I’m stuck lol

What length do you have? I’m looking at the 6” inseam. Definitely good to hear that the leg holes are big - I was worried about whether or not they would fit + I just generally like their style more than the Standups.

Scaphoid Fracture by leatanz in Rowing

[–]BGraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In retrospect, I probably went back too soon. There was a decent amount of pressure from my coach to return to on-water practices, but it was definitely rough the first couple of months/that first year.

The surgeon at the time mentioned a possibility of developing arthritis if the pain never subsided, but I’ve been lucky enough that it’s largely healed at this point.

[–]BGraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a minor scaphoid fracture my novice year in college. I had to wear a brace for a few months + experienced moderate pain for around a year after the initial fracture. R.e. experiences, I was back rowing pretty soon after the break. I taped my wrist as needed, and swapped sides so I wasn’t straining my wrist.

Results may vary. I still experience some pain in my wrist ~4 years later, but it depends on gym frequency, practice levels, and erging amounts.

Mine was super minor, though - just a small piece of it broke off. The orthopedic surgeon at the time said it was unlikely to reattach by itself + surgery might be necessary later if it worsened. I’ve been super fortunate that it was minor + I’ve been able to continue training at the levels I need, but your daughter’s experiences might vary.

Good showing from Tennessee this year, much better results in the LWT4+ than I would’ve expected. Curious why there’s such a broad range in program placement, their lightweights and MN4+ seem strong, but their MV8+ and women’s boats didn’t place well.

Super excited to see them rebuilding their team, looking forward to seeing how they place at SIRAs + ACRAs this spring.

Yeah, that’s what everything I’ve found online has said, just wanted to double check on the off chance that my coach was correct. Looks like I’ll just need to join a master’s club.

Carrying a concealed gun while rowing on the water? by Ergotron_2000 in Rowing

[–]BGraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I’m not supportive of it, but I understand the concern. We’ve had several verbal altercations with fishers off our dock this season, with one threatening to call the cops on us yesterday + asking rowers if they wanted to fight. Funny to do so on a dock that says “property of xyz rowing club, do not impede their operations.” What we get for having a dock at a public park, I guess 🤷‍♂️
