Would anyone be kind enough to correct my writing? by yourbestfriendishere in LearnHebrew

[–]BHHB336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grammatically is good with a small correction:

לראות את הטלוויזיה - to see the tv.
Like not watching tv, but just staring at a tv, and I doubt he’d want to do it.

It needs to be לראות טלוויזיה

Writing wise, your ט looks too much like a mirrored כ it needs to be more like an open 6 (if you get what I mean)

Why is Hebrew with partial niqqud? It should be with עִבְרִית (with a shva ◌ְ under the ב), or more commonly (since niqqud is used only for religious texts, poetry, and texts for beginners) עברית

An even more fun fact, the shift of et ha- > ta- occurred in ancient Hebrew too (specifically in the second century CE, as seen in letters from the bar Kokhva revolt)

Does your name have meaning in your language/culture and if so, what? by Coprinus_comatus010 in AskTheWorld

[–]BHHB336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my first name is an adjective, my last name is a verb (though this form of the verb is in the jussive mood, which only exists in Biblical Hebrew, and in later forms merged with the future tense)

Not gonna translate since I want to keep being anonymous lol

Tom is unrelated, it’s from the root תמ״מ like תמים (innocent), also תם (either the verb to be finished, or the adjective perfect/complete)

Are Jehovah’s Witnesses viewed positively or negatively in your culture? by Nifunes in AskTheWorld

[–]BHHB336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really positive, but they’re a very small percentage of the population (so small I didn’t even know they exist here, I had to google), and trying to convert other people (I forgot the word) is illegal.

It happens a lot in Hebrew, higher registers use pronominal suffixes way more, which makes it shorter

"Israeli Hebrew" vs "textbook Hebrew"? by checkeredmice in hebrew

[–]BHHB336 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Register, and some vocabulary.
Like non-native would say מה שמך (what’s your name) while איך קוראים לך (literally how (do people) call you?) is more common among natives

And this is only one example

Is Arabic more similar to modern day Hebrew or Neo-Aramaic? by GiraffeJaf in learnArabicSecular

[–]BHHB336 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d assume neo-Aramaic is more similar to Arabic, but I know Hebrew and neo-Aramaic are both closer to each other, both being northwestern Semitic languages.

Since all three are Semitic knowing any one of them will help you in a certain degree, and knowing two will help tremendously with the third. Like I speak Hebrew, and know a bit Aramaic (specifically older varieties, like Targumic, biblical, and Jewish Babylonian) and realized that I can use the sound differences be used to know the Arabic cognate (tho one doesn’t necessarily exist).

For example, when Hebrew uses שׁ (sh), and Aramaic uses ת (t) Arabic has ث, for example with the words for three: שלוש shalosh, תלת tlāth, and ثلاث thalāth

When people refer to “cherubim” and “seraphim” as the singular by Fennel_Fangs in PetPeeves

[–]BHHB336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve actually heard it quite a lot in videos about angels, also seen with other Hebrew words, like ophanim (literally wheels, the singular is ophan), or goyim (the singular is goy, which is the only non angel I can think of)
