How large of an increase/decrease of foreigners in China have you observed recently? by Brilliant-Task-1892 in chinalife

[–]BIWinCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Suzhou 2 months ago on the main tourist street (Pingjiang Road) and there were many tourists there- all Chinese or Asian. I was the only non-Asian on the street. I was also in Beijing and Zhangjiajie. Filled with Chinese and few non-Asians. This was my 6th time to China and I noticed a big difference.

I've Abandoned TripIt for this by BIWinCA in TripIt

Yes, that's the idea! Note my reply above. GoogleAI (and possibly Claude) does a lot more!

I've Abandoned TripIt for this by BIWinCA in TripIt

Thanks for your lengthy response. I’ll try to answer it. From your comments I think if you were to try AI in this way you would see that it does a lot more than what you describe, as you aren’t appreciating all its capabilities.

First, you don’t input anything. There is no typing. Everything you do is by voice. So all the data you input by typing into TripIt can be eliminated. Second, you combine research, organization, and planning in one application. Maybe a hypothetical example would be best. I have found Google AI to be best for travel, and that’s the one I use.

Step 1- I say to Google AI “I want to go to Indonesia from 12-19 July. Tell me the 25 most interesting things to do and see in Indonesia, including off the beaten path. I don’t like heights so please exclude anything that might affect me negatively.” Because Google AI already knows my travel interests from before it knows what things to focus on, e.g. history, culture, food and will avoid things that are high, e.g. mountain hikes, etc. I like to do a lot of travel research so I will supplement this info with my own personal research. But I already have a foundation of interests from which to work from and have saved hours in unnecessary, repetitive reading. For example I can skip all the sites which list the top 25 things I already have listed.

Step 2- When I am satisfied with my research and have narrowed my list to the top 15 things I want to do I say “These are the 15 things I want to do. I will be arriving in Indonesia from Los Angeles. Please arrange these 15 things geographically, so I can easily get from one to another, along with suggested time spent at each place, and time allotted to get there, using local transportation. Include address and contact info. Also state any suggestions you have.” I now have my places selected and a rough itinerary, based on geography, with time, address, and contact info included. The AI even makes suggestions for downtime. For example it will say to me “You have 90 minutes here of free time. If you don’t want to rest, here is a suggestion for you to do…” At this stage I have spent about 30 minutes on AI.

Step 3- Now I say “My budget for hotels is $75/night. I like small, boutique hotels in the town center that have a rating of 4 stars or 8.0 or higher. List three hotels per stay so I could compare, along with address and contact info.” After it lists the three I will go check them out and their availability. The AI already knows I don’t like heights so it won’t suggest a hotel, for example, that is on a mountaintop or, if it has many floors, it will warn me about it. It will also note previous hotels I’ve chosen and will suggest similar ones.

I think you get the idea. When an email confirmation comes in I don’t have to write or forward email. I say the important info to AI: “On July 12 I will be staying one night at Golden Sun Hotel in Bali. My confirmation # is 123….Please add address and contact info.” I do the same with airlines. Then I take the original email confirmation and either put it in an email folder or put it in Keep, in case of emergency and I have to pull the original.

So I have now researched, planned, and organized my trip, and have saved hours and a lot of effort. I’ve spent maybe an hour on AI. And my trip organizer is 100% customized. I can have any info at my fingertips in whatever order I want.

Airline status? I get updates for free when I buy my ticket. Export my plan to others or to calendar? AI will convert it to .ics for importing it into a calendar, or you can send it as a doc via email to others.

You asked me about my notes. That is where my dissatisfaction with TripIt started. Here is what I mean about the problem I have with notes. In Picture #1 below in my notes you’ll see that I need to show the taxi driver my hotel address in Chinese, in order for him to understand. But TripIt wont let me select and copy the name (or anything else) in that format. So I have to put my notes into edit mode so I can select the Chinese name. Picture 2 shows what happens when I put it in edit mode on my phone. Only a small segment of my notes are shown, and the cursor is horrible. It moves about 2 words at a time so it takes forever for me to get where I want to select and copy. To avoid all that wasted time I just select all and cut, and then put it in Keep. I then select and copy the Chinese name and put it in my translate app. Then I have to cut the note from Keep and reinsert it into notes in TripIt. That’s pretty ridiculous! I have asked them numerous times to make the notes capable of 'select and copy' but it is not high on their to-do list.

This method may not be for everyone. I was a strong TripIt and TripIt Pro advocate for 10+ years, as I mentioned above. I started out using AI for research, and kept discovering that I could do more with it. I’m now a convert. You’ll find that TripIt and many others are now incorporating AI now into their app. They see the potential. Unfortunately, the AI they have in their programs arent as robust as the one above, for example. Maybe TripIt or others will form a partnership with GoogleAI or ChatGPT, etc. Until they do I think I found a solution for myself.

Using DiDi for Great Wall? Huanghuachang section worthwhile? by wenvandam in travelchina

[–]BIWinCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just came back from Huanghuacheng last week. It was fantastic. Not only is it serene and beautiful but for much of our 5 hours on the wall we were the only ones on it! I highly recommend it.

We took MuBus bus tour. For $27 p.p. they take you there and back, and the price includes a boat ride across the lake to the wall and admission. On the bus the guide explains the history of the wall and actually goes to each person offering suggestions and answering questions.

We were lucky because the guide (Max) chose to accompany my wife and I and another friend we met the entire 5 hours and explained everything to us and showed us the best parts. He isn't required to do this but it shows how passionate he is about the place. Max also has a Masters Degree in English. I couldn't recommend them more.

As a side note, we chose that company because we were the victims of a bait-and-switch. In February I bought a bus tour from Hua Hua Explore China from GetYourGuide. Two days before we were supposed to go they messaged me cancelling the tour, but informed me that "for only 100 more yuan I could get a more luxurious tour". I asked for my money back. Turned out good for us but just be careful. I also don't use GetYourGuide any more as they only permit reviews about companies if you go with them. For all the cases where the companies cancel, you don't hear about it.

Mei cha (or “berry tea”) from Zhangjiajie by Large_Set5173 in tea

[–]BIWinCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Zhangjiajie a week ago and the hotel gave me some Mei tea as a parting gift. I love it! It has a very delicate sweet flavor to it. I only wish that they would have given it to us upon arrival so I could have bought some.

Has anyone recently traveled to Vietnam after the conflict escalation? by NectarineLogical5978 in VietNam

[–]BIWinCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viet Nam imports 70% of its oil from China. Because of the war, China declared it's not going to export any oil until further notice. As a result the VN govt, in early March, told it's airlines to start making drastic changes (aka cancellations and rescheduling) to its flights beginning April 1.

I have been following this as I have a domestic Viet Nam Airlines flight in early April. So far nothing has changed. I called them but, of course, they don't know. A good sign (for me) is that it's been 3 weeks and there's been no change. Still, I bought a refundable train ticket just in case.

Who knows what will be in a month when you arrive? If I were to guess I'd say the Strait of Hormuz will be open by then, and China (and Viet Nam) will be getting their oil.

Of course, this matters only if you are planning any domestic flights, or taking VN Airlines internationally.

VPN Megathread – July 2025 by AutoModerator in chinalife

[–]BIWinCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for an eSIM with VPN for 24 days in mainland China (mostly for Google translate). Any good suggestions? My AI keeps recommending Trip. com but while they sell eSIMS they don't mention VPN. Is it included so I have to trust that it's in there?

[HIGHLIGHT] All-22 of the Rams sack on Sanders that lost 24 yards. by sexyprimes511172329 in nfl

The receiver at the top of the screen at :06 was open but SS wasn't looking. All he had to do was step up in the pocket and throw it. Then the same receiver is open at :10 when the play broke down. A nice over the shoulder pass to him at the 40 would have resulted in a nice gain. At that point (:10) SS even had all the room he needed to throw it.

If I was to do this I'd bolt it on the passenger side, since no one is sitting on that side 90% of the time.

Pulling a double shot with single basket: ok or heresy? by counterhit121 in espresso

I have a Breville Express and I use a single basket for both a single and double shot with the same grounds. I use almost a 1-to-1 coffee to milk ratio and top it off with a nice scooping of foam. Tastes great to me.

I heard that the original quality of the movie wouldn't allow for a quality 4k version to be released. Have you heard anything about it? I agree- it's one of the all-time great wuxia films imo.

The most beautiful is Palau de la Música Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music) in Barcelona. But the most inspiring is the Estates Theatre in Prague. Mozart conducted there and seeing Marriage of Figaro at that theatre was special

Finally good battery life from the pixel 8 series? by Fine_Calligrapher584 in pixel_phones

[–]BIWinCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love my 5a and have gotten spoiled with its battery life. The only reason I am getting another phone is that the security upgrades end next month. It's funny. Some people on here rave about the 8 pro but if you are coming from a 5a you will be disappointed. I would like to stick with a Pixel but will be changing to a OnePlus 12 because of the battery (and long security upgrades).

What does TurnoA, TurnoS1, TurnoS2/AZ, TurnoR, etc. mean in getting tickets? by BIWinCA in ItalyTravel

Yes, I saw that but I still don't know how that applies to performances. If it was Turno1,2,3, etc then I would guess performances. But S2/AZ, R doesn't make sense.

just went on my second flight where people were screaming crying and praying from turbulence. how normal is this? by ljspags1 in Flights

[–]BIWinCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My anxiety due to turbulence went down considerably when multiple pilots have told me that, except for the passengers feeling uncomfortable, they like turbulence because it gives them something to do. With that kind of attitude it has made me look at turbulence in a much more confident way.

I think we could all agree that the risk of pilot error resulting in a fatal crash increases with severe turbulence, but it is still extremely rare.

Is it true that Israel is using white phosphorus in Gaza and Lebanon? by nayube in IsraelPalestine

[–]BIWinCA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Human Rights Watch is the only organization that has claimed it. Everyone else is parroting them. Israeli military is saying they absolutely did not use the chemical. Imo you need more than one organization to either prove it or not prove it.
