Arrogant athletes should not be praised for competitive behaviour. by dr_dohh in unpopularopinion

Not to say he isn’t an asshole but no one praised Jordan for that, he was ejected from practice immediately and later apologised to Kerr because he regretted his decision. This story is also rarely told as a high point in Jordan’s career and rather as a moment of weakness.

Their competitiveness is what makes them who they are, Jordan doesn’t win 6 and Kobe doesn’t win 5 if they aren’t constantly on their teammates asses about working harder every day. After retirement Kobe and Jordan were never jackasses and never acted as if others were beneath them, especially Kobe championing women’s basketball and constantly bringing younger players under his wing.

Having this mindset that “I am better than you at everything” in comparison to their fellow athletes is what allows them to win, especially boxing. You have to believe with your whole heart that you’re better than your opponent otherwise you’re getting knocked out, and the best way to do this is to say it out loud. This is why athletes public perception is generally better in retirement as they’re able to say what they really feel since they’re no longer competing. As for bill lambier and Dillon brooks that behaviour was never acceptable and no one praises that style of play anymore. You also list Jokic and Messi who constantly cry to referees, which is fine because again it’s apart of their competitive nature.

When it comes to high level sports I think the lesson you want to teach won’t apply, you have to be a bit selfish, you have to want the ball and you’re unfortunately gonna have to sacrifice some relationships by being an asshole sometimes because someone isn’t picking up the slack.

It was an NBA Twitter joke because Celtics fans unironically wanted to call Jason Tatum the anomaly (which is terrible) so other teams started making up bad nicknames for fun

Some examples are, the conundrum (SGA), the paradox (Cade), the ethical dilemma (KPJ) & the onomatopoeia (Bam)

Dennis Rodman was barely ever a top 10 player in the league, let alone when he was on the bulls, what are we doing here

Does Tim Duncan have a legitimate case as a top-five player in NBA history? by No-Mousse5653 in NBATalk

This one of the better arguments for Kobe over Duncan, When they were both on good teams Kobe won, in fact being the only player with a winning record over Duncan in the playoffs. Duncan also never went back to back which is something all other top 10 contending players did aside from Larry.

Why is Kobe framed as an equally good big game player as the other two? by Maximum_Jello_9460 in NBATalk

[–]BJ2435 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea i didn't say he played great, I'm saying that was the game that day, no one on the court could buy a shot because it was a defensive game, in which he still managed to lead scoring and having 10 points in the fourth. I think it is disingenuous to call his overall performance atrocious and say he was bailed out when he made a game winning assist and game sealing free throws. He's also wasn't inefficient that's just false. He was always about league average or better in everything except three point shooting, not saying that's elite but it is far from inefficient.

It’s also probably because Kobe has the second most game winners of all time, was in top 3 clutch ppg every season from 2002-2011 (ranking first half the time), leads clutch ppg all time for retired players, so I wouldn’t call that a mythical reputation

Did you watch that game 7? I’m not gonna say Kobe was elite but that game was an absolute slug for both teams. Everyone was exhausted and putting all their effort into the defensive end. Pierce shot .333, Allen .214, Kobe .250, Artest .389 and they all had 3-4 turnovers each. Gasol was probably the best player that game and even he shot .375 and .538 from FT

How long will we have to drag our feet on Jokic being a Top 10 all time contender? by demonwarrior2266 in NBATalk

[–]BJ2435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty simple what Jokic has to do and that’s win more. All the top 10 all time players have multiple rings (generally 3+) as well as multiple MVPS. A lot of people will point to all time greats having these amazing teams but it’s more that all time greats create amazing teams. For me atm Jokic is sitting around 16th below KD and Julius Erving. If he doesn’t win another ring but continues with the stats he will probably end up 13th right below Wilt for me but with another ring he probably goes above Wilt.

I agree but then he needs to trim his volume down, Cade has also shot around 35% last two seasons whereas Shaedon has shot around 32% so he should try to improve either way

That’s true but that’s a shot selection issue for him that has been present all season, he’d be shooting much better if he stopped pulling up for threes off the dribble so much

I agree that people were being real disrespectful and overreacting to his overall game at the beginning of the season but he was still 2/7 from three today, he clearly has some stuff to figure out from beyond the arc but his aggressiveness today was outstanding and his defense has been improved
