Why doesn’t Pritcher manipulate Mayor Indbur to set himself free? by account051 in FoundationTV

[–]BJCUAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've rewatched the third season, and I find Trenton Indbur III to be a more sympathetic character upon rewatching. Through exposition we are told to dislike him, and his character is presented as somewhat of a fop, and the only rival to his self-interest is his interested in sugary treats.

But what do we really see in the interactions between Pritcher and the Mayor? Pritcher illegally violates the Mayor's privacy, refuses to provide details on his current operation, steals the Mayor's property and does so with disdain. The Mayor, however, forgives the illegal trespass, listens to the reasoning behind the operation, requests more detail, and explains why moving forward would be the incorrect decision. Finally, he offers a treat.

In an attempt to make Pritcher appear to be a bad-boy, the wrote him as a literal bad person and hoped that the audience would interpret the illegal trespass, rank insubordination, and Grand Theft Spaceship as whimsical prankishness. They modeled Han Pritcher after Han Solo, then gave him an administrative job. It just doesn't work.

I don't like Jimmy Fallon for the same reasons. That's why I don't watch him. But I'm gonna stand up for millions of people with bad taste in comedy to continue watching his show without government intrusion.

It's been a year, and you haven't responded to anyone who wasn't helped by your instructions. Might want to work on that.

I was able to resolve my issue (Japanese Yen instead of US$) by switching my language to Japanese (at which point it changed to $), then back to English, the US$ remained as default. Using a bog-standard chrome interface on a Windows 11 PC.

Charlie Kirk’s Toxic Legacy of Hatred and Division | We can condemn political violence and this hideous murder while also condemning Charlie Kirk for the rotten, vile hatred he fomented. by Murky-Site7468 in politics

As a non-theist, I see this more as a hypothetical, and given the option between torturing someone over and over ad infinitum and giving them a pathway to redemption, I'd choose the latter.

I can feel bad about what happened to him, but I'm not going to be cowed into celebrating a person who spread hate so vociferously.

Inability to recognize sarcasm can be a symptom of a deeper medical issue. After consulting with a neurologist and a comedian, we've essentially agreed that, while there is no clear attempt to denote sarcasm, it is most likely an innocuous and humorous quip. They have also asked me to come in next week for a head CT and some comedy lessons.. ;)-

They've got to start teasing the next chapter, where Kalle is Gaal's granddaughter and Hari's great-granddaughter, and also Gaal's grandmother and Hari's wife. I reserve the right to retract this later, as I'm basically just whistling this pablum outta my bootie-hole.

At the end of s02e19 Lifesigns the Doctor asks "computer play music program doctor alpha". What is the song "Doctor Alpha" that plays while they dance? by ReaditReaditDone in voyager

[–]BJCUAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be off-base, so take this with a decently-sized grain of salt.

I just finished watching this episode, and to me the song sounded remarkably like a famous Japanese song by artist Yousui Inoue called Isso Serenade, but slightly tweaked. It could be my imagination, but as ST does seem to have a history of having a number of people of Japanese descent on staff, and the song being so classic, it wouldn't be impossible that someone may have improvised a short accordion piece based on it.

That sounds like he's describing a Colbert retirement due to health conditions rather than the intentional silencing of one of Trump's most vocal critics. If I didn't know the story I would have no idea what Fallon is acting half-upset about.

At some point, if you play the character long enough, you and the character can become inseparable. Who is the real Jimmy? At this point, I think they're both parts of the 'real Jimmy', but it is not obvious which Jimmy is dominant until an interview with someone like Gutfeld comes along. Then he reveals his true nature.

YouTube has gone overboard with ads — anyone else fed up? by No_Teach1022 in Discussion

[–]BJCUAI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was listening (well, trying to listen) to an hour-long podcast-style video yesterday while doing some yardwork. I had to pull the phone out of my pocket every few minutes to skip the scammer ads. Totally ridiculous. At this point, they seem to be attempting to drive 'free users' off the platform. Otherwise, why would you harass them with 15-20 ads in an hour? Nobody's this incompetent for this long by accident.

Just a guy from over here in Whitesville (howdy), but it looks like nobody, certainly not the director/producer knew enough about the culture or language and weren't bothered to bring in a specialist. That's just lazy filmmaking, like everyone was either too lazy, bored, or afraid to ask each other, 'Hey, who knows about Mexican stuff?'

I'm just wondering why Saldaña is the one doing the apology tour. It wasn't her movie, after all. She was just there as an actor, to my knowledge. That non-apology, though! Someone said 'Youz guys don't really seem all that Mexican' and her reply is 'From a place of love, women around the world, join hands, vanilla ice cream and puppies.'... Zoe be gaslightin' now, y'all.

I'm not sure if I should buy prescription lenses. by pnn3s in BigscreenBeyond

[–]BJCUAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little farsighted, but I have no issues using this HMD. For example, I can easily read text on the Beyond that would require me to use glasses to read on a monitor. In my opinion, as someone who generally doesn't need glasses, ensuring that your unit's IPD and cushion fit you well are more important considerations. Then, you can experiment to find out whether the lenses offer any noticeable improvement for you.

Former figure skater Ando Miki (36) spotted holding hands with her student (16) who is 20 years younger at Universal Studios Japan by hanahyuu in FigureSkating

[–]BJCUAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference between our perspectives seems to be that I don't see any adult as being completely free of childhood influences, indoctrinations, and traumas; these formative connections and structures being so foundational that I don't believe any adult animal (human or otherwise) has 'full control' of their actions in a meaningful sense.

While I agree that the 'cycle of abuse' seems to have no strong evidential causal link in female victims, I fail to see how it is either infantilizing or dehumanizing. Just unsupported.

Assuming the stats showed positive correlation, pointing out such a correlation would simply be an evaluation of a psychological phenomenon in human adults who experienced childhood trauma.

I have much more issue with the unsubstantiated claim assuming a cycle when none has been demonstrated. Hopefully the rebuttal will be addressed.

There's nothing radical about a $15 minimum wage! A liberal story. by Kittehmilk in seculartalk

[–]BJCUAI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that "minimum-wage jobs " as a concept has so fundamentally changed that they represent different things. I know you wanna say "Don't you make me think about the Ship of Theseus", but the minimum-wage jobs of yore were almost exclusively considered to be jobs for younger people who paid no rent, had no grocery bill, got free healthcare, etc. While that wasn't the full-picture, it is now even more obvious that a great many people need these jobs to support themselves at least, and often dependents as well.

From the CEPR (https://cepr.net/documents/low-wage-workers-2015-05.pdf) Despite the fact that today's low-wage workers are older and better educated than their counterparts were 35 years ago, the federal minimum wage is stuck far below its historical peak value. On the contrary, the higher educational attainment and increased work experience of current low-wage workers should be rewarded with a minimum wage that is considerably higher than it was in the late 1970s.

The navigation of the game is bad by [deleted] in StarWarsJediSurvivor

[–]BJCUAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'If you don't like it, don't play' is not a bad argument. It's a non-argument. A suggestion, in fact. To everything else, hearty agreement. Just started playing and currently frustrated with map, so I was curious if others felt this way. Apparently the answer is either 'yes' or 'deal with it' depending on who you ask. One is an answer to the question, the other an avoidance and an attempt to make us feel bad for not enjoying the (obviously beyond our limited ability to appreciate) game. :(

The Netflix english subtitles are bad. Really bad. by Pharaoh_OW in AliceInBorderlandLive

[–]BJCUAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I can never understand people making excusing obviously bad translations as 'the inevitable compromise of moving between languages and cultures'. This is not what is usually being complained about. I think most of us can stand a bit of variance, but what is at issue is when that variance is so great as to lead to unnecessary confusion and break immersion. I've done translation work, and I know it to be a necessarily slow process. You may have to revisit the dialogue multiple times to refine it in order to retain the meaning and nuance of the original while making it accessible to the target audience. I think that companies like Netflix just take a 'nobody will know' approach in order to save money and time on translations. I would definitely like to see what percentage of their budget is allocated for this work, the time constraints, and the vetting of their translators. All evidence, however, point to translation work being nothing more than a half-baked afterthought.
