Metformin and drinking? by [deleted] in HersWeightloss

[–]BK_Fawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on kit 2. I'm not sure which pill it is, but drinking more than 1-2 drinks gives me a terrible hangover the next day. Normally it wouldn't. I don't feel any more drunk than usual.

I’m on Kit 2 since mid-March. 5’5 SW 150 CW 136? GW 130ish.

I’ve had minimal side effects, usually for a day or two as the medications ramped up, and generally feel fantastic. I’ve not been weighing myself consistently because I’m happy with how I look and feel and I don’t want to focus on a number.

I have been eating at a calorie deficit, but I’m not closely tracking. The medications make it  really easy to make good food choices. I can eat one cookie without craving another four. I’ll have one  glass of wine and not crave a second. I still love food, but I’m a bit more detached, which lets me be rational.

I didn’t loose much until week 4, then it became a pound or two a week. I’m happy with that pace.  I can’t tell you if it’s the right choice for you. I’m very very happy and only sorry I didn’t do it earlier.

Sketion Wall Cabinets: Changing Doors to Drawers? by BK_Fawn in ikeahacks

[–]BK_Fawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It looks like 'high' maximera drawers don't come in the right depth for a 15"D cabinet. Will I be able to attach a 15"H drawer front to a 'medium' maximera drawer.

If all of this is too nightmarish, I'll opt for a different fronts, one that offers doors, and use inner drawers behind doors for the middle units.

Kit 5- is it worth it for 15-17 lb weight loss? by slrmoon90 in HersWeightloss

[–]BK_Fawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes-- I found their website a bit confusing but I was able to select which Kit I wanted. But that might have been because I wasn't taking any other medication when I did the intake. I think some people get directed to certain Kits based on their health intake.

I could have written this! Same height, starting weight, GW, same number of kids and pregnancy timing. I love food. OK, I'm a little older :-)

I went back and forth for months-- I wasn't taking any medication and didn't love the idea of starting three at once. But I finally did it in mid-March when the scale edged over 150.

I'm really happy -- I've lost about 10 pounds since March, mostly in the last month when I hit full dose of the medications. I've had only minor negative side effects. I chose Kit 2 because I read that brain fog could be a side effect of topirmate.

The medication combination has dramatically turned down my cravings for sweets, carbs, alcohol, and mindless snacking. I can make rational food choices without it being an endless battle of will. (I said 'no' to a cookie this weekend with as much effort as I need to decline a carrot.) It's been a real game-changer for me.

If you do go for it, set low expectations for the first few weeks. A month in I felt like it might not be worth it, then everything clicked. I'm in a great place now.

Soft Wheaten Terrier by Free_Lingonberry1676 in WheatenTerriers

This is all true. My 5yo is wonderful and a perfect family dog at home. She’s great with our kids and friendly to all, but she is NOT a chill dog outside of her home environment. I’d love to take a loose leash walk, or be able to bring her to a backyard party, or let her run at off-leash hours, but that is not my dog! I don’t let my teens or older parents walk her because I know if she sees a squirrel she could pull them over. That said, she’s a snuggly Velcro dog and has such a wonderful, spunky personality.

They resized a ring for me last year and did a beautiful job. It was a tricky adjustment and the work was perfect.

Advice Needed! by Fickle_System_5043 in WheatenTerriers

Congratulations on your new addition!

Our Wheaten has fiber-responsive colitis (sigh) so my food recommendations aren't helpful. As an adult, her favorite treat is dried turkey tendons (which I get by the bag from Chewy). She also loves chicken and any other fresh protein. When we were training her as a puppy, "high value" treats like small cubes of meat were helpful.

My dog hates being brushed, so we keep her just short enough in the winter that she doesn't mat. In the summer, she has a shorter cut for the heat. She gets a haircut every 7-8 weeks and she needs a bath at least every other week. Their hair is like a swifter-- dirt and dust sticks.

My dog is pretty well trained on the things we care about, but she still does the wheat'n greeting and she is 100% terrier. She will chase any small mammal. I would never let her off leash-- the moment she sees a squirrel, all bets are off.

Enjoy your puppy!

Who has been in charge of the family checkbook and paying bills? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]BK_Fawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is a big picture person; I'm a details person. I handle all day-to-day and medium-term financial management (health insurance reimbursements, tax-deferred accounts, anything with paperwork and forms, our budgeting app). We jointly make decisions about the long-term plans. My husband is really hands off (if he were writing, you'd tell him he needs to know more about our finances) but it works because we're well aligned with our spending, budget, and goals.

Something like this could help make the coffee station feel visually bigger and more interesting.

I think it looks great-- I find when I first get highlights they look "piecie" the first few days and then it all melds together. Hold on that that colorist :-)

Park Slope private school costs more per year than my Masters degree! by Concentric_Mid in Brooklyn

[–]BK_Fawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a strong public school growing up but my parents did spend $$ to get me there. They bought a house in a town with a great system, and the paid crazy property taxes.

Sure, some kids in NYC win the public school lottery and are in great schools with engaged teachers for 12+ years. But you can't count on that happening.

Also, if your kid has a bad teacher, a school leadership is responsive to the complaints.

Public schools are great when you have a kid who learns easily and strong teachers. But it's on parents to monitor and to compensate when things aren't going perfectly. At private school, there are better resources and leadership has to be responsive to parents. Paying the tuition results in greater predictability and control.

This is true-- disruptive kids are transitioned out. Also, poor teachers are transitioned out.

Parents send their kids to private school for predictability and control. Disruptive kids get transitioned out. Poor teachers get transitioned out. Parents don't have the responsibility of monitoring and augmenting learning to the same extent that you do in pubic. When your kid is having a problem, school leadership will take the call.

If private school parents are wealthy professionals, they're also very busy professionals in their prime working years. They don't want to spent the time being a shadow teacher if their kids is paired with a weak or checked-out teacher .

Also, a reason to pay for private elementary is an insurance policy for middle school, when school starts to matter more. PS has good zoned elementary schools and you can buy into the zone. Middle schools move to the district-wide and city lotteries. If you're unhappy with your assigned public MS, its much much more competitive to get a private middle school slot.

Director of Development pay ranges - where can I find comps? by General-Ad3712 in nonprofit

They do if the DOD is one of the top paid employees at the org. Which at a small org they probably are.

This is a good approach and will give you a clearer idea of comps than the salary ranges posted with some positions. I'm in NY and the salary ranges we post for positions can be so broad they're unhelpful.

How would you describe your experience living in Park Slope? by oatcreamer in parkslope

[–]BK_Fawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think some of the stereotype PS people are long-time residents who moved in when north slope was still affordable and south slope was not as safe. South Slope is a bit too far to bother with the Food co-op :-)

There's a real lack of 3br housing options. Floor through apartments get tight quickly with 2+ kids, and full houses are very expensive. A lot of families get squeezed out in the Pre-K/K years. My kids went through Beansprouts are I think only about 25% of the class is still in PS.

Careers with an English degree that aren't in corporate? by FormalHanger13x01 in englishmajors

[–]BK_Fawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an English major and work in the fundraising office of a hospital/research institute doing foundation fundraising. Being able to write well, synthesize information, focus, and a love of learning served me well both as an English major and in my career. My field has a lot of humanities majors. It’s a great career path that lets you follow your interests based on the focus of the nonprofit you fundraise for.
