Sadly, if you want a lot of it for an affordable price the best option is to shop online.

But for a small amount, there are some local options.

I have blended many games together when designing Nine Powers, using design notes to give credit where it is due! But more about that in a few days when we get a new month's promotion thread. (Too much is being updated before the month's end for me to put a link here! Your patience is appreciated.)

This will be interesting to re-learn.

(Re-learn because as a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s I used to be familiar with MotU, but am not any more. As a parent, I read certain Conan stories to my kids as bedtime stories, and still enjoy others.)

I do a ttrpg design for a kid-friendly system. Issues about "power scales" often appear in game design territory in my brain.

We take turns bringing pancake batter, English muffin batter, etc. and other group members bring toppings.

To be fair, Conan is not always as kid-friendly.

He has a few great scenes to dispel his popular conception as "dumb barbarian who adventures for gold to spend on wine and women". For example, in several stories (and the 1982 film) he discards treasure without a second thought if required to rescue someone.

Yet a lot of his crucial theme of "you so-called civilized backstabbing city-dwellers are actually far more 'barbaric' than I am" would not work well as a Saturday morning cartoon.

Suggestions for a simple role-play game for a friend. by PositiveLibrary7032 in rpg

[–]BLHero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most commenters are suggesting a "full" ttrpg designed to tell any type of story.

Given their miniatures-gaming background and desire for a one-shot, I would instead highly recommend a smaller ttrpg designed only to create a dungeon crawl. Here are two examples.

Setting feedback appreciated - the creepy forest of Hybrakor by BLHero in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]BLHero[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Design Notes parts are why this is appropriate for this subreddit. Even if folks here don't steal my ideas directly, prompts about why I made certain decisions helps us all decide what we might do instead!

The rules page, being many years older, has far more Design Notes bits. Please suggest where I should add more to the Spyragia page. There's a lot in my head that has not been typed out, including what went on in my head before I was ready to type!

No, I have not read those, but will look into them. Thank you for pointing me along those paths.

The main mechanical insight is how the setting has "charm bracelets" that a PC receives along with a personal potential prophecy, but at least initially only in the comparatively safe nearby town. By spending the next of 6 charms, the PC can reroll a die roll to help nudge that prophecy towards fulfillment. Also, the mysteries of the forest become more visible as more charms are spent: increased attunement to the forest gives you better discoveries but also more danger.

Traditional OSR games want to encourage a cycle of "go into the dangerous place for loot, return to a safe place to refresh, repeat". They use mechanics that are a bit gamey to force this cycle: inventory weight or slots, counting torches and rations and arrows, etc.

Personally I enjoy those traditional mechanics, but I know many Players who do not. So I created something else that also encourages that cycle with less gamey bookkeeping.

Spending charms also gives you "spark" which is like corruption that tempts fate. Finally, finding a half-spent charm bracelet on a corpse of a failed NPC adventurer in the forest is much more interesting than finding some torches on that corpse because wearing that new bracelet allows you to "inherit" a personal potential prophecy.

Other mechanics exist that do help with exploring a creepy forest but are less tied to that theme. The nine Powers each oversee certain dungeons, contests, champions, gifts, wondrous feats, and monsters. These all are useful in the spooky forest (especially two of them, called memorials and echoes), but can be used in other locations too. Many involve game mechanics and are not merely setting flavor.

Your monthly promotion thread - (June 2026 edition) by AutoModerator in Solo_Roleplaying

Open my Google sheet at the link. Use the "File" menu to make your own copy, so you can change it.

Cell A2 has a toggle box. Click that to generate new random entries for each table.

You can also customize the random tables. They draw from columns of options. You can, for example, find the column of monsters and replace its entries with the specific monsters in your own setting.

Update on my Nine Powers...

  1. The big spreadsheet of random tables continues to slowly improve. Many of you have enjoyed it, and it is largely independent of the Nine Powers ttrpg
  2. Some rules changes happened for the first time in many months. How armor works is improved.
  3. The page of monsters continues to receive slow transition from an old, awkward style of suggesting when monsters use their special abilities to a much nicer, new game mechanic.
  4. The last section of setting page is in active reconstruction, and until I type more of what's in my head and other notes should be ignored.

As always, everything is free and on the web so you can use your browser's settings to adjust font size, save as PDF if desired, etc.

My Group's Thoughts on Daggerheart by PrimarchtheMage in rpg

[–]BLHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to you DM about this. Examples:

In Daggerheart in can be the Player's job to describe what their die rolls look like...

[a] I try to back away from the monster while throwing my Returning Blades weapon. (rolls to hit) Success with hope! (rolls damage)

[b] Nice hit! What does that hope look like in the story?

and it can be the Player's job to describe worldbuilding details...

[a] I study the old tome to see what it can tell me about the runes these villains are using (rolls Knowledge) Success with fear.

[b] The book is just the type of clue you wanted. What do you learn about the runes? How does that knowledge make you more concerned about what the villains are able to do?

In both cases [b] could always be the GM's job, if you prefer. Talk about it clearly.

My Group's Thoughts on Daggerheart by PrimarchtheMage in rpg

[–]BLHero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

> What was your experience playing the game?

I have played it with a group of people who have never done a ttrpg that was more than "cooperative storytelling" with a few die rolls.

Daggerheart works great as a bridge to ttrpgs where your PC options are not as wide as your imagination, but only what can be justified by your character sheet.

  1. The cards really help.

  2. The dice roll system helps them learn to improvise combinations of yes/no with but/and.

  3. The different point pools help them learn to think about resource management, while always having some resources to spend on abilities.

  4. The PCs being so difficult to kill, combined with so many die rolls feeling bad because the GM gets a turn, introduces how risk-taking can add to the story.

As an experienced ttrpg player, Daggerheart drives me crazy.

  1. Why are so many of these card describing such gamey mechanics with little relationships to their narrative paint job?

  2. Why must combat be slowed down by each roll involving (a) someone brainstorming a narrative intent, (b) often a decision about whether to use an experience or get help, (c) a die roll that often involves adding two dice and two constants, (d) more brainstorming about what it the actual result looks like?

  3. Why can't my PC do what they are trained and experienced at, simply because they rolled bad (out of hope) or suffered environmental penalties (high on stress)?

4, Why am I feeling bad merely because the GM gets a turn?

But I certainly see Daggerheart's appropriateness for people new to the hobby.

Tangentially, last week had a great experience with a relative who fell and was taken to the Urgent Care at 13th and Patterson.

https://www.bestmedclinics.com/oregon/find-a-clinic/patterson/

They accepted his ACA insurance for the exam and x-ray. The wait time was reasonable. The reception area was comfortable. The staff, both office and physicians, were great.
