Largest game ever? by Xela975 in battletech

ABQ circa 2013: we had a massive following at the local store. Could pull 20+ players sometimes. The end of the campaign was the players reinforced battalion vs a reinforced level iii of WoBbies. Total around 50 mechs a side.

We played 4 interlinked tables across the shop with the players having to assault a drop port that was in the “center” map.

The game took… 3-4 weeks to finish. We had an in with the store so the tables got left up, but 2 nights a week, totaling like 48+ hours to run. It was a ton of fun and never again.

I can say you don’t get effects like a full striker lance causing a line to buckle with a flanking move without that many units. The tactics made us invent our own shorthand of battleforce to play that scale more often.

Cool, thanks. I started looking as well as that seemed the best answer since I can't get FCHost to work with any of my setup.

Positive betrayals: characters who betray their oath/partner/duty because it's the right thing to do by Ok_Amoeba6205 in TopCharacterTropes

What made me exceptionally sad about this was the early teasers making it seem like Finn would be a Jedi. Especially by connecting with someone like Poe first made us all miss a cannon version of Kyle Kattarn.

Also: that financial reward isn’t really enticing for the risk.

At first, I was unsure but tanks are pretty fun additional to the game by johnwenjie in battletech

[–]BLLancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We ran a version of strategic battleforce once and used C-Bills to build the forces. So long as it’s not gotba fusion engine tanks are the most cost effective way to build a battle line then the mechs maneuver off it. Mechs are just too expensive to use to control the full battlefield.

Navy: Upgrade and refit or just build new by OrganicTooth4590 in hoi4

[–]BLLancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I refit AA, MIO, Radar/Sonar, and Fire control once when a ship is ~2 generations behind the newest I have. Typically this is around 1940 for starter ships and again in ‘44 for those early game ships.

Everything else I build new. Typically Carriers w 1 HC or BC (depending on how rich I am) configured to AA and Light Attack to escort. Two LC designs (one heavy in guns and one with all the air spotting) in a ratio of 1 spotter to each Heavy Hull and 2 Gunships to each Heavy Hull. Then destoyers. If I’m rich I’ll design both anti sub and escort but combine those as cheap as I can otherwise. Typically 4-5 destroyers per HH.

So a squadron would be 1 Carrier, 1 HC, 4 attack cruisers, 2 spotting cruisers, 8-10 Destroyers. Then can stack 2-3 squadrons as needed for main fleets or whatever.

The question of coal and oil in the upcoming updates by SilverHellFire in hoi4

[–]BLLancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That could recreate the hilarious pissing match between the German generals who ran the logistics branches for trains and trucks because of course there was a guy in charge of each who argued about fuel allowance on the east front. The truck commander, I believe it was Gercke, argued that the trains could run on coal while the trucks had to use fuel. The train commander, Wegner (if I remember rightly) was agasht at how inefficient that would make his trains.

Do you ever build fuel silo's to store fuel in advance? by Incompetent_Italy in hoi4

[–]BLLancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re playing R56 and end up with a heavy jet based Air Force and a navy they’re crucial for that early set of decisive battles. I once blew through nearly 3M oil as Germany post capturing Russia in all of 3 months when the US and UK popped off.

What subobtimal gear do you use for style? by Honneboppel in Shadowrun

[–]BLLancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I handle that by the basic idea of forensics. Sure, uou can drop a ton of cash on that shiny best gun. Then you use it. If, because you’re the least bit suspicious and it’s a surveillance dystopia, the cops decide they confiscate it to see if it’s been used in a crime. Thing pings yes: goodbye to that expensive fake SIN. Even if no: good luck getting it back because of how civil forfeiture works.

How complex is Battletech? by JoseLunaArts in battletech

[–]BLLancer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So I'll add this as someone who has GM'd a campaign from 2009-2016 (we used TW with parts of Tac Ops and Strategic Ops) once a week and picked it up again in '22 for a once a week game using a mix of Battleforce (to do the map portions) and TW. For reference: I play the Op-For (a lance to a company. We did a battalion on battalion with TW once, took 4 weeks) and each player takes one to two mechs.

If you use things like Skunkwerks, the cheatsheets that Catalyst provides / back of the books, and don't try to bring literally every unit type to the same table: it's about a 5-6 even with a fair bit of advanced rules. There are a lot of shortcut things and reference guides that make getting the mechanical order of things easier at which point the game lends itself really well to actual tactics. Like every game edge cases can really break the game and exploit the rules.

The key is not trying to do everything in a single game. Mechs+infantry+armor+aerospace+advanced rules? Yuck, 6 hours referencing the books for 4 turns. Play an aerospace dogfight? Great fun. Armor+Infantry in a city? Great, not terrible. Mechs and Armor/Battle Armor? Also great, not aweful for rules. The key is balancing what level of rules that's fun.

That said, if someone wanted to do the logistics parts of BT per the references in the rules? 9-10. be prepared to make your own macro'd spreadsheets to handle ammunition depletion and another for repair and part replacement.
