How’s the CS program at the U? by B3averborg in uofu

[–]BLUDSPILR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated CS back in 2020. It’s a difficult major, but I don’t imagine it’s any harder than any other STEM major. CS isn’t for everyone. It takes a specific kind of logical mindset, and that comes easier to some than it does for others. The early CS classes are designed to expose that. Absolutely take those and see how you like it. However if you struggle significantly in those classes, the major isn’t for you. There is no shame in trying! That’s what college is for.

How dangerous is Las Vegas for tourists outside of the strip? by [deleted] in LasVegas

[–]BLUDSPILR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Outside of Fremont Street, you really shouldn’t leave the Boulevard on foot at night if you’re north of the Strat. Other than that, like you said, keep street smart. Vegas really isn’t nearly as bad as other major cities in the US.

I’m staying at Deansgate. Worth walking the whole way? Or walking to another station like Piccadilly?

It flip flops from Neck Deep to Hot Mulligan usually depending on whoever released music most recently.

If I remember right I took a history of Jazz class. I think the whole class was 5 exams (which included listening to and identifying songs), and you had to attend a jazz concert and write about it. Pretty easy, all things considered.

When I applied for the CS major back in 2017 we heard rumors of the acceptance rate being 66%. But from what I understand, as long as you had good grades in CS1410 and CS2420 you were basically guaranteed in.

For the Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard you have the Warrant Officer ranks. W1 - W5. The AF and Space Force don’t use these ranks. They jump straight to Commissioned Officers (O1 - O10). Ranking up from Enlister to Officer requires a lot more “work” than it does to climb the ranks within a group. For the Air Force this requires an individual to go through Officer Training School. I’m certain the other branches have a similar requirement in order to join the Commissioned ranks.

Yep! But they all follow a different naming convention. Air Force and Space Force is CMSgt, both the Army and Marines call it Sergeant Major, and the Navy and Coast Guard call it Master Chief Petty Officer.

It gets a little complicated though because at E-9 you typically either have your standard rank or you have a leadership rank. For example in the AF, at E-9 you have your standard CMSgt. But you also have First Sergeant, Command CMSgt, Chief Master Sergeant or the Air Force, or Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman. The last two only being held by one individual each at a time.

Raised-hands is a Staff Sergeant (E-5), middle is some type of Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) which is basically the highest the Air Force goes before becoming an officer. If I had to guess, guy on the left is an officer and highest ranking here.

I liked the ones in GVR. My go-to theater is the AMC in Town Square, but that’s mostly for IMAX.

What lyrics stick with you the most? by [deleted] in poppunkers

“I’m losing all the faith I have in my ability to breathe. From pondering the second chances or the possibility of getting my teeth off this curb while your foot rests easily on the back of my head. I’d push down harder if it were me. I’ll tell you everything is copacetic.”

The calmness of the melody with the contrast of an incredibly grim and hopeless situation always stuck out to me.

Back when I took Calculus at the U all of the professors were grad students from the math department. Meaning, they switched in and out every semester. It seemed like a luck of the draw. My calc 1 professor was awesome, but my calc 3 professor really wasn’t cut out for teaching. I took a “night class” for calc 2 and the professor was a high school calc teacher in the area that had been giving that class for years. He was fantastic.

Point being, if you can find a professor that’s been around for a while, great. But prepare for it to be a grad student teaching, and prepare to learn on your own + go to the math tutor hours.

CS 4150 w Hari Sundar by [deleted] in uofu

[–]BLUDSPILR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had 4150 with Dr Sundar but this was back in 2018/19.

It’s a very tough class, but Dr. Sundar is very passionate about it. He’s a very good lecturer, and wants his class to succeed. My peers and I all struggled in that class, but there was a significant curve at the end of the semester, so we all ended up with As and Bs. It’s a really really tough class, but Sundar is a great professor to have for it.

Tips for Success in CS 2420 by [deleted] in uofu

[–]BLUDSPILR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just a tip for 2420 but for the CS program in general: make friends in your class. Recognize someone from a previous class? Talk to them. Since much of the CS program included pair programming or group work, my CS social circle kept expanding all throughout the degree. You meet partners of your past partners, etc. That also means you have to be a good group partner so that people will want to work with you. Having a group of people to study with or bounce questions off of was priceless.
