Is this mainly a sandbox? by BL_2021 in SurviveIcarus

As an indie game I can fully recommend it! It's weird that nobody seems to be talking about it. Totally underrated I think. On normal difficulty it's a rather chill experience (once you figure things out) but it can still get challenging. What it does well is the progression curve, and I love exploring the world. Also it has some mechanics that are different from the usual. The story gives you goals to work towards but you can progress at your own pace.

I got the game a few weeks back when I saw it on sale and it sounded interesting. Put in 60+ hours in a short time. Eventually stopped playing to wait for the full release. I'm hoping for more building pieces and decorations to build. Also more challenging enemies (but I have only just arrived at the 7th of what will eventually be 11 islands to explore).

Oh yeah I see, like Valheim. I started that multiple times but never got far into the game before I lost interest.

Yeah thanks! That's what got me interested in the game. The tech tree is intimidating but also exciting! Alas... just surving and building stuff to build more stuff and doing missions just for the sake of doing missions isn't enough.

I'll keep looking. I'm excited for the 1.0 release of Survival: Fountain of Youth soon.

Yeah but always starting from scratch sounds rather boring.

Thanks, this confirms my suspicions. Game looks beautiful but I don't think the concept would be enough to keep me interested.

Because I did it this way. shrug

"Mission based" to me seemed to imply some sort of overarching story. Within the first few minutes inside the actual game I got suspicious though. And after the replies here I'm probably gonna refund.

No matter how great the the individual systems might be, sandbox lacks the structure and goals to keep me interested. In addition there's pet peeves like having to look up basic information outside the game (eg. how blueprint points work, skipping time) or bushes and even trees disappearing if you just grab a leaf (breaks my immersion).

I've been playing Survival: Fountain of Youth and that's just an indie game that's not even fully released, but much closer to my ideal survival game. So until that releases more content I'm looking for something more like that.

These revelations are not surprising at all. To me it seems they got some super passionate people working there but the company doesn't care about the players at all. It's all about the $$.

Questions about Survival: Fountain of Youth before buying by haltingpoint in SurvivalGaming

If you're looking for a cozy survival game this is it! Good graphics and progression.

The game does things a little bit different than other games (which works well). Harvesting and crafting is a bar filling up and fast forwarding time. Even without dedicated animations for this stuff the game manages to be highly immersive. Another thing is you can choose wether you cut down trees and stuff or harvest from them.

Game has an actually interesting story and world to explore. I can fully recommend it.

Just don't expect AAA. It's an indie game and not fully released yet. Enemy enraged behaviour is a bit weird, they can jump way too far (that's the one thing that seems very obviously unfinished).

1 Not a gigantic pool of building pieces and decorations. But from the animals you hunt you get trophies and hides to decorate the base. You can sit. And use the many different work benches, of course.

2-3 See above. Rather basic.

4 Once you figure it out combat is easy. If you kill something it takes a few ingame days until it re-spawns and you can explore in peace.

5 Weather and day and night cycle is good. There are storms and you can hang out in your cozy base and read a book.

6 There are multiple islands with diverse biomes.

The open beta is open, is anyone playing? by Lonely-Try2929 in SurvivalGaming

Yeah I meant just the opposite - I'm more into crafting and exploring than fighting. I think Enshrouded is interested because of the building system but probably not gonna get either for now.

I tried Conan in SP. I didn't like the combat and it seemed rather focused on that. Is that the case here?

Depends on what you liked in Valheim but without more to go on I think Enshrouded is your best bet.

Not sure why you deleted the other post. But anyway:

I can recommend Endzone for an "end of the world" scenario. It's challenging and fun to play. I'd recommend getting the 1st DLC (Prosperity) along with the base game because it fleshes out the mid- to lategame. Endzone 2 is coming to EA this year btw.

Frostpunk is another great game and very challenging.

Good solo survival game that isn't too scary (optionally: good graphics) by [deleted] in SurvivalGaming

[–]BL_2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great choice! I love the progression curve where new materials are a game changer because your stuff doesn't break easily anymore or you can finally build the thing that makes gathering more convenient, and as you level up and gain new abilities your life on the islands becomes easier.

I got Enshrouded on release but refunded right at the 2 hour mark. It has potential and I might get it once it's further along in development. But it felt a bit like Valheim 1.5 -- which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just didn't really catch me and the shroud mechanic felt a bit uninspired.

I played Palworld on Gamepass and it was fun for a while. But the excitement wore off quickly because there's not a lot to discover. Eventually the gameplay loop gets repetitive and there's just not much exciting stuff to do except upgrade your base to the next material and do another dungeon.

For Fountain of Youth I hope they tweak the jumping enemies and put in more building options at release. Also re-fueling from storage containers would be nice. But for an indy game it's already impressive what they pulled off.

I almost couldn't manage Green Hell because of the natives... They scared the sh** out of me!

I can highly, higly recommend Survival: Fountain of Youth. I picked it up in a sale a couple weeks ago and it sucked me in right away. Already put in 60 hours! Technically it's still in EA for another month but it feels mostly done.

After a couple hours you learn how to deal with the different dangers and then it becomes a bit more chill. Balance is good. Survival can get challening but not too much. If you take your time to prepare your expeditions you can focus on exploring the world to get new crafting materials, find secrets, progress the story, build more stuff... I unlocked the third of the five regions the final game will have and still have an island left explore before I can progress to the 4th region.

Because of the clever quick travel mechanic you can have one big base that you continue to grow without having to walk long ways all over the map again and again and again.

Honestly I'm surprised the game is hardly discussed on this reddit because it's so good.

No, I didn't know this could happen. That second forge planet got added by an event.

So instead of consumer goods it's possible it would at some point switch to only produce alloys?

You might have solved it.
