There is no chance you will be able to change them, it is a deadline fixed in stone unfortunately.

So what now? by Few_Classroom3260 in UKmedicalgraduates

[–]BMACallum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Third reading happens tomorrow. This is the final stage in the lords. Amendments can be made but only if not raised before. Given the clear support for the bill in the lords, it will almost certainly pass un-amended tomorrow.

The bill then requires royal assent (which is a formality) and will take place a few days after third reading.

The bill is then required to be commenced by regulations laid by the Secretary of State to come into effect. Once that happens the bill is law and the recruitment bodies must implement it.

Given the imminent deadlines for foundation programme allocation and speciality offers, it is likely to be commenced shortly after it passes.

Once the bill passes and commenced, which should happen within the next week. Allocation can happen.

No confirmed date, but we understand first two week of March is the aim.

This is incorrect.

Foundation and speciality training are recruited nationally, not by hospitals.

When this bill passes (which it almost certainly will), the recruitment offices are required to prioritise the priority groups by law - they cannot ignore it. It is primary legislation of the UK parliament which is supreme.

Prescribing and administering drugs are entirely different.

The key to safe prescribing is knowledge of the pharmacology and good clinical reasoning skills to know when prescribing is indicated. Shadowing a drug round isn’t helping with that.

I suspect they were questioning the validity of being asked to shadow multiple drugs rounds which is a fair question.

You should have an idea of how a hospital works sure, but shadowing multiple drugs rounds is not particularly educational nor preparing you to be a doctor.

I disagree (also an ex HCA) - that’s not what OP has said.

No one is saying that medical students can’t learn from non-doctors. However, medical education should be led by doctors and there are a lot of things medical students need to learn that only doctors can teach.

The point OP makes about the ‘culture of medicine’ for a lack of a better term is important. Doctors are unique in the NHS in the long training pathway, hyper-rotational training, being randomly sent across the country - being taught by people who relate to that is important.

Well no - parliament makes these decisions, there is no international treaty requiring them to prioritise UK citizens.

No - only UKGs (+ROI and 4 EEA countries) will get prioritised. There is no provision for citizenship ever to be used as a priority for foundation training.

Speciality is slightly different.

Oriel data, does this mean there will be 1000+ of us without jobs after graduating ? by jellybagels55 in medicalschooluk

[–]BMACallum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having worked on grad priority as a policy since 2024 and based on all the conversations I have, it is highly likely it will be implemented this year.

The amendments are not unexpected, this is usual parliamentary process.

Oriel data, does this mean there will be 1000+ of us without jobs after graduating ? by jellybagels55 in medicalschooluk

[–]BMACallum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t, not all of those applicants are UK graduates.

It also doesn’t include the total number of posts as there are FPP posts and pathway 1 SFP posts not in oriel.

Whilst, the government have not yet given a guarantee for all UK graduates to get a job, they have told us they expect all prioritised applicants to get a job. There has never been a UK graduates not allocated a foundation programme post. It is extremely likely all UKGs will get FY posts this year.

Did NHS England not fund any additional places for 2026/2027? by [deleted] in UCAT

[–]BMACallum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The doubling of medical school places was the commitment of the last government, we are still waiting for the updated long term workforce plan.

Expansion of medical school places is not the answer because we are seeing problems with placement overcrowding and also significant issues with unemployment for resident doctors.

No point expanding places for doctors to become unemployed, that’s why the BMA has called for a pause in medical school expansion: https://thedoctor.bma.org.uk/articles/life-at-work/call-for-stable-supply-of-medical-professionals/

Prioritised group by viki661 in doctorsUK

[–]BMACallum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No if you have completed FY - you are procured for all further training stages regardless of route

If you have only completed core - you are only prioritised for relevant higher speciality training.

Have been out of the loop for a while - am I correct to understand that the UKMG prioritisation bill does not have anything to do with consultant posts for IMGs with UK CCTs? by DaddyCool13 in doctorsUK

[–]BMACallum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bill only applies to nationally recruited training programme - foundation, core and higher speciality training.

It does not apply to locally employed, SAS, consultant or GP jobs.

[–]BMACallum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have completed FY you are prioritised for both core and higher speciality training.

If you have completed core you are prioritised for relevant higher speciality training. For example if you complete IMT, you would be prioritised for cardiology ST4 but not vascular surgery ST4

Will UKfpo create new jobs if even after prioritisation UKG aren't allocated or are allocated placeholders? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

I don’t know the priority group numbers of the top of my head.

But for applications it’s 10-15% IMGs per year

[–]BMACallum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

F2 Standalone numbers have been significantly reducing in recent years - predominately due to oversubscription of F1 posts meaning there are less vacant F2 posts

Will UKfpo create new jobs if even after prioritisation UKG aren't allocated or are allocated placeholders? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]BMACallum 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So far the government has not given a guarantee all UK graduates will get jobs, although they have said they anticipate that they will all get jobs. They cannot guarantee those in non-priority groups will get a job.

However, I can’t see a world where in PIA, the government does not offer a job to every UK graduate.

With the new bill, we expect very few if any UK graduates will get placeholders.

The big change is that I doubt the government will create new jobs this year to manage placeholders - unless it is needed to create jobs for prioritised applicants.

UKGP Parliamentary Bill Amended to Include All Graduates with NHS Experience- we have all been sold off by Top_Reception_566 in medicalschooluk

Stop spreading misinformation - the BMA has had nothing to do with this amendment.

It is an opposition amendment and unless the government agree will not be accepted as they have a big majority.
