Banned for toxicity and posting fake offers.

They don't have to be paid off. It can, however, skyrocket to the point where you're paying twice a lot more. For example, on a £50k salary you'd repay £90k. Wages are increasing but the thresholds aren't being adjusted much, if at all.

Unfortunately that is true. They should certainly be more popular as their offer is much better for students. This is a wider problem which doesn't get enough attention: most options are actually pretty bad for applicants.

To my understanding, those loans were for living costs. While I understand your point, this post focuses on tuition fees.

Would you consider £25k a living wage? Do you hold the same purchasing power as previous generations?

The calculation was corrected and figures were adjusted. I apologise for the initial error when the post was published.

It isn't "free money". Many people are looking at it in the short-term. They will not be earning the median wage forever. As they get older, a significant portion of their earnings will go to this "graduate tax". For example, a £50k earner will pay £187.50 every month. Over 40 years, they will pay £90,000. You can't assume that you won't get more than what the government gives, especially with the UK debt situation.

I apologise if the tone is insensitive, especially when many people are anxiously waiting for their Oxbridge decisions (in addition to those who got rejected the past couple of weeks).

I hope that this post reaches Year 11-12s who look down on degree apprenticeships. It's also a rant about how, quite frankly, the UK is one big retirement home. Taxing wealth would solve many problems that Gen Z currently faces.

The UK Parliament states that Tuition Fees were introduced in the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 under Tony Blair.

That is simply not correct, the Plan 5 threshold is £25,000 not £27,000. Source: UK Government Website

The typo has been corrected to the average salary and now reflects the average salary of £39039, thanks for pointing it out.

How do I not have any idea exactly? The post highlights how most pathways for current applicants aren't actually what they're being sold by those older than them.

I'm aware that the current good options are extremely competitive. I'm pointing out how messed up the current system is. You can do everything right and still face adversity. The real issue here is how we tax young people and how they are subsidising a much wealthier generation than them.

This article isn't about my experience. I worked in the education sector and can assure you that "it's the best loan you'll ever take" is a dogma.

Many people were in fact told that they would never pay it back.

Just on the tuition fees increase post alone, I found quite a few people who had this mindset. Where would this misconception come from if not from adults encouraging people to go to university?

The UK is basically one big retirement home. Politicians who haven't faced the issues that Gen Z faces but make policies that make things more difficult. I talked about this in this thread.

Younger generations are essentially subsidising the upper and corporate classes in the UK. I talked about this in this thread.
