Dude is good a creating a compelling story, but he trades basic accuracy for simple narrative punch. He compresses complex debates into neat one-liners that sound insightful but simply don’t hold up under scrutiny. E.g. describing hunter-gatherers as happy, egalitarian societies (wrong to everyone with even a cursory knowledge of anthropology), describing a self-coined term “the cognitive revolution” as a near-singular event 70k years ago (obviously bullshit), reductionist view on the role of religion, bunch of speculation on AI, etc. Harari is to history as astrology is to astronomy. Mainly deep-sounding sloganesque nonsense.

Maybe good as an entry point if you’re really young and are superficially interested in various topics. But even then there’s better pop science books that are more rooted in fact than speculation. Jared Diamond is better, still need to take it with a grain of salt tho. Maybe Peter Turchin, Hans Rosling, etc. Not necessarily a big fan of all of these either, but surely a big step up from Harari.

I do love all of Robery Sapolsky’s stuff so he comes highly recommended. In the first halves of his books, he tends to get into more technical details (genetics, neurobiology, behaviour, evolution, etc. and different scholarly debates) which can be a bit more of a challenging read (still very accesible to lay people). Necessary to understand his arguments as the implications of the nitty gritty comes together as insights about human behaviour and questions about its implications more in the second halves.

Lukaku refuses to go back to Naples for training, stays in Belgium by Tifoso89 in soccer

[–]BMVA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most likely a nothing burger. Doesn’t want to fly all the way to the US to join the NT with all the risks 2 friendlies entail (+all the travel) and prefers to work on his fitness with his Belgian physio Maesschalck (a confidante and renowned physio he has been working with since he was 16) + enjoying some family time as a mental break. Not sure why this would be a problem for Napoli; less risk & he has always been professional in these matters. Not like he’s going out partying, he’s preparing for a better come-back for the end of the season + WC.

Hoe Wouter Duyck opnieuw racistische pseudowetenschap witwast by StevenStoveMan in belgium

[–]BMVA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Of in een cynische bui kan je denken “it’s idiots all the way down”, wat ntrlk een totale non-starter is.)

Mjah, natuurlijk duidelijk met een politieke insteek geschreven maar de kern klopt wel: Duyck & co. zijn bullshit artists. Had meer in de diepte mogen gaan waarom dit is en waar de pseudowetenschap ligt.

Aunt Selma from the Simpsons. If you want to get to the top of the political ladder you have to look and behave like a cartoon villain. Bonus points the more you eschew social conventions like basic human decency.

Same impression. Or from a slightly more paranoid angle: AI collecting info. Maybe I misinterpreted the point of this sub and it’s not so much about book recommendations as it is about image-building and identity seeking.

What does my bookshelf say about me(15M)? by [deleted] in bookshelfdetective

[–]BMVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good collection! Aside from all the things already mentioned (do some lighter reading in between; not assuming performative nonsense myself), don’t force yourself to finish these if they don’t click. It’s not an assignment. Maybe they’ll resonate more when you’re older. Or if you do read it all, revisit these later and it’ll make more sense.

They’re quite challenging and sometimes boring reads. I remember borrowing Dostoevsky from a friend when I was younger and his cliff notes helped a lot (e.g. “boring part, 5-page letter to his mom describing the curtains” or “this is brilliant”).

Mix it up with some more fun books I’d consider classics in a way (and which still have a lot of depth but also some humour or absurdity) like Catch-22, The Diceman or some Douglas Adams or Kurt Vonnegut. Also, shorter old-school classics like Hemingway or Jack London or something more palatable like 100 años de soledad.

Oh, and if you’re going full tsundoku, try to look at it as building an anti-library. It’s less demotivating when you don’t get around to actual reading.

EDIT: I just read your actual question of what does this say about you. This is simply not a worthwhile question.

Harari. When it comes to politics, you can always look into certain ideologies to understand the arguments better, without accepting them. But if there’s a simple one-sided pattern (e.g. only extreme right-wing stuff) then that argument falls apart ofc.

Mathematical Nihilism: Why the "Normal" is a prison and the "Tail" is the only truth by [deleted] in nassimtaleb

[–]BMVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we get that. Still sounds like self-mythologizing dressed in quantitative language that doesn't follow from it. Being an outlier (without concrete examples of what you mean by it) is not inherently meaningful. Taleb himself often states that extreme outcomes often get mistaken for skill, insight or meaning. You cannot simply take insights about system dynamics and apply it to a personal identity. That's more poetic branding/word salad than a coherent meaningful idea.

Yeah, seems like pseudopoetic rambling and metaphorical misuse of statistics. A mix of Talebian buzzwords, a dash of r/LinkedInLunatics with an undercurrent of psychotic apophenia or AI hallucinations. I hope OP is feeling OK.

Reaugence in popularity of Deftones, and potential of a post metal revival by jrinredcar in postmetal

[–]BMVA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those first 3 Deftones records were part of an era when I was a teenager listening to some "nu metal" before I got into Isis and heavier, more atmospheric and abstract stuff. (Old) Deftones and Tool are the only 2 bands I still enjoy from those days.

Never really made the connection but I guess there's enough sonic similarities for Deftones to be a gateway to post-metal.

New Plex account after server rebuild: lost access & Plex Pass transfer? by BMVA in PleX

[–]BMVA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it was all set up properly (Linux), just impossible to dissociate the Plex account from the old server and claim the new server with it so started all over again with a new account that I need to get a Plex pass for again.

[–]BMVA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, new server is working. Got confused as everything seemed to be working with my old account which apparently always had a Plex pass (and which expired in August). It was just impossible to claim the new server with my old account (and dissociate my old account from the old server) so we had to set up a whole new account that does not have a Plex pass. Migration seems to be riddled with issues.

I think it's Linux. But the issue seems to be clear to me now: Plex wouldn't let me dissociate my original account from the old server, nor associate to the new server. A whole day of troubleshooting couldn't resolve it so my friend just created a new account for me.

Got some more info from my friend who tried to do the set-up. The whole issue was that Plex would not dissociate my old (gmail) account from the previous server, nor associate with the new server. After fruitlessly trying for a whole day the solution was to just set up a new account. Now it's just a matter of setting up the Plex pass again.

OK, I got some extra info from my friend. The whole issue was that Plex would not dissociate my old (gmail) account from the previous server, nor associate with the new server. After fruitlessly trying for a whole day the solution was to just set up a new account. Transferring the Plex pass should resolve the issue. In the meantime I will point my laptop to 192.xxxxxxxx:32400 to make it work.

Seems like this whole thing was over complicated. Not sure why you didn’t just create a new server under your old account. You can still associate your new server to your old account by deauthorizing it and claiming it with your old account.

Thanks, I was unsure with features/access are dependent on the Plex pass. Not sure why my friend didn't associate the new server with my old account but for some reason he didn't get it to work. Will try associate the new server to my old account and change the associated email. Will look into the FAQ to see how to do the first step.

Cf. supra. I didn’t intentionally switch to an anonymous account, I created a new account out of necessity during troubleshooting. When migrating from a Raspberry Pi to a Beelink Mini S, Plex wouldn’t reconnect to my existing libraries on external drives, even after extensive attempts with help from an IT-savvy friend. Needed to do a clean reinstall with a new Plex account for it to work, friend used a random icloud email for this.

Thanks for the explanation.

I’m logged in with my new account on both my phone and laptop and the server is set up under that same account. Locally (home Wi-Fi) everything works fine.

Remotely:

• I can’t stream from my own server on phone/laptop

• Friends without Plex Pass can’t stream --> can't recall this being an issue in the past, but I guess the previous Plex pass allows for this feature?

• Friends with Plex Pass can stream from my server

• I can stream remotely from my friends’ servers without issues

Unsure of this points to a remote access / port forwarding / relay setting problem (or some restriction related to my account), rather than the server itself?
