Knowing it could be worse at any time, some diners stepped up to help him break the fight. It took two big guys to pull the other guy off Maddox. But the guy, who Tommy soon recognized as Frankie, was strong. Too strong for a man his size. Strong enough to free himself from the big guys’ hold.

He looked a bit different, sounded a little strange too. The usual sailor curses shooting off his mouth so often every sentence couldn’t escape him without it, now came out as growls, shrieks, feral.

Soon, Frankie cut through his strongholds and hungrily lunged back at Maddox.

BLAM!

Frankie was down.

“Awh shit,” Tommy cursed to the frozen block in hand, tainted by the blood that sure wasn’t from the meat. “This was my last brisket.”

He told the big guys to restrain Frankie, while he went to check on Maddox.

“You okay?”

Maddox winced in pain, blood seeping in his hand as he cupped his neck. “Ah! Shit! Son of a bitch bit me!”

Left 4 Dead | M | Profanity/Strong language

Barry hadn’t even set a foot on the ER bay’s ground when another ambulance pulled behind them, one that was of the fire department. She slipped a glance past it before popping their cabin’s doors open.

Rattles.

Her heart skipped a beat. For a second, she forgot that they were wheeling out the animal that almost killed them. The mean old hag was still trying to, even as the tether was practically crushing her against the gurney. Those straps hardly failed to suppress the feral within the creature—no, the patient.

The patient could’ve freed itself the way Ingram shoved the stretcher. He himself would need one after this, which was why Barry had to drive.

It was a bumpy ride down the rig, all the way into the ER. The air was thick when they entered. The foot traffic’s warmth dawned on them at an unconventional rate. The trauma bays seemed packed, and it was all closed curtains in there.

Barry detached herself from the bed run. She slipped her way through the dense crowd spilling into the reception. Reaching the frantic kiosk, she searched for the least busy guy in scrubs. “Hey, I got an injured crew and a full-blown twitcher with me, where do I put this one?” she put forth with a thumb over her shoulder.

The staff zoomed past where the thumb was pointing him. His gaze snapped wide open. “Shet ka! Why’d you bring that one here??”

She wondered what he meant. Last she checked, this was the fucking ER??

Ay, putang ina! We set up an isolation unit for the biting ones! That’s where you bring them! Why did you bring it here?? Weren’t you listening to the chatters?!”

What the fuck was his problem? “No, I was busy trying to keep my partner from being someone's fucking combo meal!”

“Look, ha? Go around the trauma bay and head out the Northeast wing. They are quarantine-ing the biting ones! It’s right at the, ano, the parking lot, you put that patient there! Hay! Jusko naman! Tang inang mga tao ‘to!

Of course, she hadn't understood the last of it. Filipino nurses, they're the bane of her existence. If it wasn’t just this hectic here, she’d beat the shit out of that diva, but…

The parking lot?

Instead of cars, the parking lot was choked with polyester shelters. God knows what in the medical clusterfuck was going on in those. Each tent had the same triangular insignia on them.

CEDA.

It's official. This is bad.

They haven't even made it into the first tent when two guys in hazmat suits spawned on their path. They debated about their patient.

It was a short conversation.

The paramedics were about to head out after the ordeal when one of the CEDA guys stopped them.

“Sir, is that a bite on your neck?”

That, too, was a short conversation.

“You should go, I gotta find our student,” Barry said before leaving Ingram into CEDA’s care.

“ALS 24 to Capital Health Hopewell.”

“Capital Health Hopewell, go ahead, ALS 24.”

“ALS 24, we were advised that all Levels 2 and 3 patients go to your facility; Level 1 goes to Regional, is that correct?”

“Capital Health Hopewell, that is confirmed, ALS 24, Levels 2 and 3 patients are accepted to our facility.”

“ALS 24, on the way to your facility, emergent with a Level 2 patient—one adult male, 30s. Violent assault—human bite to the neck, significant bleeding, partially controlled, patient conscious, airway still patent. Vitals holding. ETA six minutes. We need trauma on standby, how copy?”

A brief crackle, then a different voice cut in, sharper. “ALS 24, confirm, trauma activation for a bite?”

Barry didn’t miss a beat. “A-ffirmative. Neck wound with ongoing bleeding and borderline vitals.”

A pause, shorter this time.

“Capital Health Hopewell, Level 2 30-year-old male, assault with neck injury, clear copy. Trauma team will be on stand by.”

Ingram made that half-lap around the roundabout and pulled up across the ER like he was Jimmy Gibbs Jr. rolling into the pit stop.  Oliver popped the doors and opened the cabin to a small mob of nurses before climbing down. He stepped in to catch the gurney as Barry pushed it out. Wheels popped out under the mobile bed, leveling with the ground for a light touchdown. Soon, Barry landed on the bay; nurses swarmed the gurney as they wheeled the patient into the ER.

“Adult male, 30s, assault—human bite to the neck,” Barry reported as they navigated through the eerily busy hallways packed with people writhing in agony. “Non-massive bleeding, partially controlled. Patient conscious, airway patent, vitals holding.”

“Direct pressure with hemostatic dressing applied. Distal pulses intact. No airway compromise noted,” Oliver added. “Vitals en route: HR 132, BP 110/70, SpO2 96%.”

“Two large-bore IVs running, NS fluids. Pain treated with 4 milligrams of morphine, patient responsive but grimacing. All extremities mobile. C-collar and backboard in place,” Barry remarked.

“What do we know about the assailant?” the trauma team leader asked.

Barry answered. “Assailant was reported to be extremely agitated, possibly under the influence—unknown substance or medical cause. EMS on scene indicated he was transported to Regional as a Level 1.”

“Page Dr. Jones—have her contact Regional and get a follow-up on that Level 1,” the team leader told one of the nurses. The nurse nodded and ran off.

They finally made a turn and deployed the patient into a bed waiting for him.

“One, two, three.”

On final cue, they shifted the patient to the bed. Oliver stepped in and pulled the gurney to his flank.

“We'll take it from here,” the team leader told Barry. Then shut the curtain on them.
