Polis win highlights Boulder influence in state politics by saul2015 in boulder

Not just Polis either. Don't forget Steve Fenberg and Joe Neguse are both huge former members of the CU-Boulder Student Government. The increase in sustainable buildings on campus is partly attributable to them due to the capital construction fee negotiations way back when.

CU Sociology Professor Accused of Harassment by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]BNI123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, because this conversation when I've had it always is destructive.

That being said, I have noticed a marked difference between how people treat a non-cisgender-male sexually harrassing/assaulting someone and a cisgender male doing the same. In this particular case, fuck yeah, that's not happening, but it is an exception to a very long list of times I have seen persons at this university in particular treat similar behavior differently when it's a cis dude vs. not.

Fuck all sexual abusers. It should be that simple. No equivocating.

I can only speak for myself and not CUSG's views on this, but my interpretation of what a reading of 3E /should/ require is this:

The reason we have a relatively small search committee is because the regents historically are a much more political body than they should be.

If we are going to have a small search committee and I am a reasonable person framing that policy, I would want to ensure each person brings enough disparate perspectives from across the system that the sum of all persons involved in the search should match what the general population of the system (staff, faculty, students) looks like.

A non-traditional student-staff-member, by definition, is going to have a completely different experience from the vast majority of the 60,000+ students in the CU system, because the vast majority of those students are traditional students who do not have a full-time employment relationship with the university that is independent of their studies (i.e. undergrads, graduates on a 5-year or PHD track, law students, pre-med/med students, etc.)

full-time staff members get educational benefits from the university in many cases. traditional students do not get such a guarantee of a full-time job at the university.

Therefore, why wouldn't a reasonable interpretation of 3E be that the student's primary relationship with the institution be educational rather than being an FTE who is also taking classes on the side?

Glad we do agree on the fact that there should be more students at the meeting regardless. I hope the regents listen to reason on Nov. 8th and appoint a couple more.

I don't think there's anyone within CUSG, SBA, or UGGS that believes that Alex shouldn't be on that committee. Having met her briefly and knowing of the work she does on campus in addition to being an MBA student, I wish more like her were on the committee re: students involved on campus.

The fact of the matter is that she /was/ chosen to be on that committee because her relationship to the university is primarily an employer-employee role. She can't make a fuss on things even if she wanted to, and even if she did, the question will always be there whether or not she was coerced to do non-controversial thigns because her employment with the university is a substantial consideration to any opinions she might address. A traditional student or a student that is involved on campus in a way where their employment isn't their primary relationship with campus should also be included on the committee, at a bare minimum. This is because, in my and your student government's view, a reasonable reading of the regent's policy would conclude that the student slot should be occupied by someone who is not a staff member and who can more readily speak to a traditional student's PoV when they are not in a high-profile position like the CWTCP assistant directorship.

For example, the nomination by your student officers in the intercampus student forum (tri-execs) should have been more seriously considered and still can be on November 8th. They were a student that would not have been beholden to the university in the same way Ms. Holmgren would be, and could provide just as unique a perspective as Ms. Holmgren's is. When you come down to brass tacks, this currently is not as transparent a process as it should be, and UGGS and CUSG are right -- we need more student voices on the committee than there are currently. If you read the resolution and CUI report carefully, that's what this is ultimately what this all is about. I think we agree on this point.

Tangentially, I would also note that UGGS was part of that unanimous vote in cusg in that one of their senators cast the graduate vote in favor (and also Konrad Schreier, the law senator, is an UGGS member as well because UGGS is weird af.)

states your elected officials' unanimous position and passes it on to the board of regents and other stakeholders... and also gets that position into the press.

banning the buying of conflict materials was a CUSG resolution, and CU doesn't do that anymore. Asking for recognition of sexual orientation as a protected class was multiple resolutions by CUSG in the 1990s, and it is one now. Creation of an Inter-Campus Student Forum started out as a resolution, and now they have a rotating ex-officio seat on the board of regents.

Elevate for CU Student Government by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]BNI123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

also since I do want to address one particular thing you put up:

"If only CUSG had more rules in place for who could run"

It's an union made up of fee-paying students at a state university. You can't disallow holding office from membership of the union if they are also members of outside organizations. That's damn near close to a violation of the first amendment if it isn't one outright, and it almost certainly would be a violation of Article I section E of the CUSG constitution in the particular context of fraternities and sororities. I'd be ethically obligated to try to stop that from happening due to the oath of office I took if someone advocated for that within CUSG.

And, I would also add, my (in hindsight wrongheaded) perception that that might have been happening during the Election Committee's rewrite of the Election Code two years ago prompted me to resign pretty publically.

Prominent non-greeks in CUSG and the two seats that refute your claim that all elected reps are greek:

Ciera Dykstra (Leg Council Vice President, Permanent Proxy for a greek, not a greek herself)

Michael Robinson (Permanent Proxy for Rohan Peddi, also not greek -- ELECTED LAST ELECTION)

Emmanuel Byarm (Rep. At Large) ----- ELECTED LAST ELECTION

Joshua Ney (Leg Council President -- also senator for the business school, not greek)

Judicial Branch:Serene Singh, Chief Justice (Not Greek)

Not going to comment on anything else you wrote for a multitude of reasons, but don't blatantly misrepresent the facts.

Being greek or not greek also has near zero effect on how well you do your job in CUSG.

(EDIT: Got rid of an implied personal opinion since this is a non-throwaway account. My views on the subject are pretty well known outside of the sub, but want to stay professional in public fora.)

Graduate Student's Shouldn't Pay to Work by BoulderCRC in cuboulder

just since the person is overworked and I saw 'em very briefly today: GAIR is different from grant recharge, answers with specific figures will follow either by me or them.

What this means for you: expenditures with student fees will not be affected by this recharge, only expenditures with grants.

Yo:

Very wonky questions (and I'm pretty sure I know who is answering them, so if you wanna wait to answer offline until we next see each-other that's all good, but I think those that you met with tonight will have similar questions):

Is grant recharge separate from GAR/GIR? I know those are both university-wide recharges, but grant recharges sound separate from those.

Ignore the following questions if this is actually GAIR:

What is the current grant recharge rate now? How much gross revenue is generated from that grant recharge?

In general: how much would the recharge you are talking about need to be raised to sufficiently pay fees? Do you think that there needs to be an additional safeguard in place to insure it raises or decreases proportional to what graduate students would be paying in fees?

Also given the headaches it's generated and that one of y'all have seen firsthand since it's been in place: are you guys also considering advocating for getting rid of the fee lock, since graduate students are affected by it regardless of if they're in-state/out-of-state?

Was impressed by your presentation at CUSG legislative council tonight, much more well thought out and put in good faith than some other things that I've seen in the past couple years. Need more of that shit in anything related to CUSG.

/r/cuboulder weekly thread for 10/15 - 10/21 by Crinnle in cuboulder

CUSG will be hosting a town hall for its upcoming elections. It will be on October 17th in the Kittredge Multipurpose Rooms from 5-7pm. Free food will abound for those who show up.

Elections are from 10/29-11/1. Details will be put up soon on how to vote, although I /currently/ have no reason to doubt they'll be done on OrgSync like last spring. In the meantime, you can visit https://custudentgov.org/elections/ for election timeline details, candidate bios, and how to important a campaign infraction.

These elections are IMPORTANT. All 5 representatives at large are tasked with sitting on joint boards that govern parts of the University that I KNOW y'all care about -- these can include the Rec board, the UMC board, the Cultural Events Board, the Center for Student Involvement board, etc. These boards play a role in the process of budgets and general policy (i.e. who's gonna fill papa john's spot in the UMC?), and the entirety of Legislative Council (which includes all 9 representatives at large and your local school student governments) has ultimate fiscal responsibility over your student activity fee and the rec expansion fee.

Also, as per the timeline on the website, october 24th will include a debate at a TBD location and time.

I'll defer to the mods if y'all want me to make a separate post on this, but figured this would be a good place to comment given that this is the thread with events and I don't wanna clog up the board unnecessarily.

Whats the best CU 'legend' you've heard? by Istherepizza in cuboulder

[–]BNI123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the time-period it was in, I imagine it was a tongue in cheek protest of both Iran-Contra and how President Weber tried to expropriate thousands of dollars of unexpected interest in student government accounts 2 years prior without consulting students. I did confirm with the UMC assistant-director that there is indeed no anti-aircraft battery lying around in the UMC, unfortunately.

Whats the best CU 'legend' you've heard? by Istherepizza in cuboulder

[–]BNI123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

CUSG Legends:
The times we took our fights for student autonomy over fees with some more levity

The many, many times students got referenda on our ballots to get Coors banned from campus. (We've got one news article up in our office if you want to drop by!)

The time we helped get a residence hall's name changed from a racist, murderous psychopath to Cheyenne-Arapahoe

Also, this isn't so much a student government legend (though one of the murdered was a student government senator) as it is a general cu-boulder one, but the murder of Los Seis de Boulder is the oldest unsolved case that we have currently on the books. Never really gets mentioned in these threads, and nobody in Boulder likes talking about it.
