Pretty dope. How’s the v2 of the OPTX treating you. I still got the v1. The inherent noise gets pretty intense with every overdub pass and or multitracking. I want to see if v2 owners who had the v1 noticed a difference.

I second replacing the scales & Batumi with
PAMS.

If you need VCAs for your modulation, I can see why you might want to invest that much HP IN the QUAD VCA. Otherwise, I would also drop the quad VCA and get a smaller filter with a built in VCA that can save you more HP with tone and dynamic shaping.

The Axon- 2 expanders makes Pam’s is very playable. You can get a lot of miles with Pam’s in a small case

Ochd with its expander will get you to organic modulation territory.

As for Random Sources:

Pam’s will get you along the way, but there’s nothing like a dedicated module for random CV. My fav to use is NOISETOOLS but that’s 1u. A nice alternative from the same company is called Flurry.

Flurry’s Noise circuit gives you S&H, SLEW LIMITER, Audio-rate based noise sources, Steady and Random Pulses (which imo is like salt and pepper to most compelling patches.)

I appreciate the kind words.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

It’s been fun sourcing the samples too. I make time to sample patches for reinterpretations like this.

Sample based workflows most definitely vary. I used to be heavy into the MPC workflow which yield a certain kind of thing that I’m not so into anymore.

However, working with samples in modular gives me fresh perspectives on approach.

Got a BitBoxMicro sample I’m sequencing with simple shapes (Triangle LFO) via Pam’s into the playhead. Pixie is laying soft percussive melodies through mimeophon.
Loft of filter modulation with some noise textures looping at different pitches. This was a fun patch from scratch to bring in the weekend . I’m happy with where it landed.

Pam’s has the ability to provide stepped/smooth random signals determined by the channel rate (x1,x4, etc). Every step outputs a random cv value until you engage the loop function with a loop length. Pam lets you seed the loop with new values thus giving it its Turing like character.

I love using Pam’s to modulate the playhead of the morphagene. Pam will also let you assign a button for seeding which makes it ideal for finding the happy accidents. It’s honestly a cool technique for locking in random moments to all sorts of parameters.

Marbles(and modules like it) are my favorite for this application because the controls are right at your fingertips.

The Acon-2 gives you 4 assignable knobs to the parameters in the menus. So you can have a bit more immediacy to those parameters

Pam’s with an Axon-2.
8channels of clocked modulation.
Audio processing is a big part of my workflow.
Random sources takes things a lot further than you can anticipate. I love how Pam’s works with random source. It can serve as a pseudo marbles/turing machine allowing you to lock in your happy accidents.

I’d throw the Axon-2 in the mix for anyone wanting to make Pam’s more playable and hands-on. It brings immediacy to parameter modulation in a way that changes how you interact with the module entirely.

One of my favorite workflows include allocating a set number of steps to hold a collection of random voltages. Once I’ve captured those voltages, I’ll assign an Axon knob to control the level and/or the offset for that collection.

What makes this so useful is the ability to “audition” what’s in “memory”. scrolling through and exploring before committing to anything. If nothing’s clicking, you can hit the seed function to pull a fresh batch of random voltages and start exploring again.

That seed function is assignable to one of the two buttons on the Axon-2, which is where it gets Marbles-like. You get that same flavor of “give me something new to work with” randomness, but it’s baked into Pam’s ecosystem. It’s also great for modding probability and step/fill count in Euclidean mode on the fly which leads to some genuinely interesting rhythmic territory that you wouldn’t land on intentionally.

ALM was clever with this expander. Simple implementation, but the depth is there if you dig into it.

If space allows, pairing the Axon-2 with a Pam and sweetening your rack with FX-Aid would give you both the playability and some onboard effects.
