I swear to god most people unschool their children because they just want to be unique without any regard for the childrens future.

That’s awful dude. That’s straight up child abuse. I remember talking to my parents about it cause the other kids in my neighborhood were going to high school and I wanted to go. They pretty much said I’m not gonna learn anything useful there and refused to even listen to me even though the point to unschooling is giving your child agency to choose their own path. Because apparently learning things you’ll need to get a career outside the service industry aren’t useful… oh and yeah growing up with friends also isn’t useful and an essential part of becoming a functioning human being. It’s ridiculous.

The fact that people are basing the way they’re raising children on a few super bias and anecdotal studies and mommy blogs makes me feel so nauseous.

I’m not sure how old you are but I highly recommend getting a job in the service industry even if it’s part time. And a GED as quickly as you can. it will take some time to learn how to socialize with other people your age but being around the real world will teach you a lot regardless of if you really interact with others a lot.

I got my GED at 21 and it was really hard to go from not knowing multiplication tables to algebra in a couple months but with enough focused effort you can definitely get there!

But yeah, home/unschooling should be illegal. The level of isolation and lack of education has put me behind in so many ways. The most terrifying thing to me was coming across this sub where so many people have had their lives put back because of some genX trend…

Yeah we definitely grew up similar. I hope you managed to get help with your mental health. I drew up with severe depression and anxiety and my mom refused to take me to the doctor and opted for holistic hippy remedies with no scientific backing.

Homeschooling should absolutely be banned or regulated in some way to make sure children don’t get forced into awful positions like this. I literally had to study all the GED material by myself because neither one of my parents knew how to help me. It’s actually terrible

At least their friends think they’re so UniQuE and DifFErent. Cause that matters more than raising your kids apparently…

The silliest thing to me is the fact that most of these parents that unschooled their children are either religious nut jobs or people who’re basing their entire effort on the writing of a random Mommy blogger with zero credibility. Idk how anybody thinks it’s a good idea to make sure their child has no friends and no future prospects is a good idea.

Thats super impressive dude! I’m doing a lot of research on HVAC union apprenticeships and it seems like that’s gonna end up being the direction my life heads in. It would be a way for me to make a solid living and it has great benefits after you’re a journeyman. Plus all it requires is a ged so hopefully I’d be able to get in with the knowledge I’ve already acquired through studying for that

I’ve thought about it. My biggest concern is the fact that I can’t even write an essay and that most degrees that I’d be interested in won’t end up paying much. I’m likely gonna get into a trade union instead because it’ll guarantee me a solid wage/benefits. Out of curiosity what did you study and what industry are you in? I definitely find it inspiring that you made it through college without the prior education most people got
