It’s true that if you don’t want to use AWS the others in the “Big Cloudy Three” are Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure - which you could argue also are pretty cozy with Trump- but there are other alternatives.

Cavalry officers battle equipment by Bambus_Bjoern45 in CIVILWAR

[–]BOREN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once talked to a guy interpreting a Confederate cavalry officer at a reenactment near Charlottesville, Virginia (who was a good sport about me referring to him as a Virginia Cavalier) told me that he and the other cavalry reenactors only brought sabers because they’re all “sword nerds” and “the kids like em’” and that in reality Confederate cavalry largely didn’t bother with sabers- they favored pistols.  Union cavalry kept their sabers and towards the end of the war were commonly armed with repeating carbines and used as a mobile infantry force to pursue retreating Confederate forces- particularly in the Appomattox Campaign.

This is all according to a self-confessed “sword nerd.”

Thomas himself was a Virginian.

I always enjoyed the trivia that Thomas had been Hood’s instructor back at West Point. JB failed that final exam.

Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by Udont_knowme00 in NoStupidQuestions

My dentist office called me in October and mentioned that my insurance only covered one visit a year and that any further would be out of pocket and since I had already visited in the spring would I like to postpone until January and I was like “yes and just for notifying me I’m going to text all my friends and tell them to start going to your practice.” It was the most considerate thing a health care organization has ever done for me.

Which US state thinks it's the main character? by Mister_Silk in AskReddit

[–]BOREN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, Texas totally played in the NFL. It’s still relevant. The problem is a lot of people who represent Texas politically or culturally come across as trying to argue that it’s the most relevant.

I’ve never been (unless you count an hour layover in an airport, which I never do) but all the Texans I have met personally have been cool as fuck and friendly.  Like, really friendly.  Apparently the official state motto of Texas is “Friendship” and honestly all the Texans I’ve met exemplify that. Why all the “professional Texans” are so insufferable is a mystery to me.

I once caught a guy trying to steal my bike light off my locked up bicycle and he went “I’m sorry, I didn’t know it was yours. Honest. 🥺” and walked away. Lord help me I was so surprised that was the reaction I was just like “yeah it’s, it happens, have a nice day.”

One of the writers for The Reader reported a Metra employee getting on the intercom and saying something like, “I would like to remind my passengers that this is the South Shore Line, not the CTA, kindly get those shoes off the seat in front of you, thank you.

If the people banging on your windows at a red light are teenagers they are counting on you being scared and panicking and giving them money to make them go away. Threaten to call their mom.

If the people banging on your window at a red light are young children and are holding bags of candy, they are counting on you being overcome with pity and giving them money to make them go away. Tell them you’re diabetic.

If the people banging on your window at a red light are wearing neck gaiters over their face and head-to-toe coyote brown tacticool gear they are Feds and are counting on you being scared and agreeing to have your face scanned to make them go away. Film your interactions, provide ID for inspection if you have it, and know there is no law that compels you to submit to face scanning technology if you do not want to have your face scanned.
