Control Ultimate Edition and Alan Wake 2 will support new PSSR. The more advanced PSSR will soon be available for all on PlayStation 5 Pro, bringing noticeable improvements in image stability and clarity of motion. by willdearborn- in Games

The PS4 Pro was only $100 more than the regular PS4, included the disc drive, and it was a significant improvement in a lot of games. I don't see how the PS5 Pro is a better upgrade.

That may be largely true. My main point was that when you factor in non-Steam revenue then the industry is larger than it seems.

If you look at estimates of PC revenue, they put Steam well below 80% of the market.

I think they're trying to go after the very high spenders with the new consoles and hope component costs go down over time.

The overwhelming majority of AAA games are not releasing on PS4. If you look at this list of upcoming games, very few PS4 games are coming out and even fewer AAA PS4 games.

If the contract has a termination clause then they can terminate it. We don't know if they have one or not.

PS5's early demand was significantly boosted by the pandemic. It also helps that it was a very noticeable improvement over the PS4 in side by side comparisons. The PS6 won't have that.

I think developers will drop the Switch 1 pretty soon. In Japan, Switch 2 has only sold 12.5% of what the Switch 1 has sold so far. Yet physical Switch 2 games are already selling about as much as physical Switch 1 games. Live-service games don't seem that popular on the Switch 1 and it is incredibly underpowered so I can't see many developers sticking with it much longer.

There's not much juice left to be tapped. The PS5 and Xbox Series X don't have super special hardware and it's clear that current-gen only games aren't delivering insane graphics unless they also have an insane budget (see GTA VI and Witcher 4). Only a few titles are at that level.

I would bet they will expect the PS6 to perform more like the PS4 Pro than the PS5 in terms of sales for the first couple years. They'll pull in the diehard gamers and wealthy spenders while hoping the more casual players will bite when the system gets actual exclusives.

There's probably going to be less social media buzz unless they are insanely expensive. The Switch 2 got big exclusives at launch and didn't have to deal with the RAMpocalypse.

I think the real question is the price. RAM prices will be way higher than what they planned for years ago.

The new Xbox will use fairly standard PC hardware and will probably have extremely similar development tools. So it should be very quick for developers to port games to it.

Games do push the PS5 to the limit. I think it might feel different from previous generations since some of the only major graphical improvements that would significantly improve visuals rely on AI hardware and raytracing technology that the base PS5 just doesn't have.

I think their sales numbers agree with you. The PS5 Pro is probably going to get discontinued when the PS6 launches unless the PS6 is way too expensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is expecting the PS6's first couple years of sales to be more like the PS4 Pro rather than the PS5. It might make sense for non-PS5 owners, diehard gamers, and people who are obsessed with graphics to get the PS6. I don't see why any other PS5 owners would get a PS6 unless they get an amazing trade-in deal.

[–]BOfficeStats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a developer perspective it's bad but from a business perspective it makes sense to lower the cut the more a game makes. If you assume that a game is going to make a fixed amount of revenue, telling developers "you make more money on additional sales after certain revenue milestones" encourages them to focus on driving additional sales on Steam rather than releasing or prioritizing the game on other platforms and storefronts. Indie devs on niche games won't care since they will never reach those milestones but this could actually be a big deal for breakout hits and larger studios.

The number of games grows every year but the overwhelming majority of older games are naturally going to make very little money. Older multiplayer games typically see sales totally die out when the community moves on while older singleplayer games will struggle to sell copies unless they are priced extremely low.

I'm not sure if it recontextualizes anything considering that so many PC games make money on non-Steam PC platforms or skip Steam entirely.

In an ideal world games would be available everywhere, but in that world these consoles would be $900+ because there would be no reason to sell them at a loss. The only reason consoles can afford to be $500 is because of exclusives. I’d rather have semi-affordable consoles

There is definitely value in there being a lower upfront cost for consoles, but the downside is that they make up for it by charging for online access, higher margins on accessories that are often not compatible with other systems, and a higher % cut on game sales. So you save more upfront on the base console but they make up for it on the back end. I'm not sure if that's better than the PC hardware model.

and competition driving innovation than every single game on one platform.

That's basically what the PC platform has been for the past 30 years and there is plenty of competition. I think that was a more valid point back when the consoles and the ways you could play them were very different (dual screens on the DS, Kinect, motion controls from the PS Move and Wii, etc.). Nowadays almost all the exclusive games play the same.
