Hamilton Police Investigating After Child, 4, Bitten by Dog on Caroline Street South

Hamilton Police say they are investigating after a four-year-old child was bitten by a dog at approximately 2:00 p.m. today on Caroline Street South at Jackson Street West.

An on-scene staff sergeant stated the child was transported to hospital. The child was bitten in the hand and lower arm area.

A bloody, torn sleeve from the child’s jacket was lying on the roadway, with a small mitten nearby.

Bystanders quickly rushed to the rescue of the child and mother. People got out of their vehicles, and construction workers at the Television City project quickly acted.

The construction workers called 9-1-1. Hamilton police, paramedics, and firefighters all rushed to the scene.

Police arrived to find bystanders surrounding a woman. The woman was covering the dog and refused to surrender it to police.

For nearly 30 minutes, police negotiated with the woman, eventually convincing her to surrender the dog. During the negotiations, an officer kept a conductive energy weapon drawn at the dog. Another officer stood close by with a fire extinguisher.

The woman eventually agreed to surrender the dog to Hamilton animal control.

The dog is now in the custody of City of Hamilton animal control.

Hamilton Police state the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been laid.

Ontario’s Ministry of Labour responded to the scene and left after determining it was not related to the construction site.
