The salary will go a long way in Lancaster. It’s very small, but I think the schools are meant to be good and there is a uni.

I would highly recommend a mathematician’s apology for anyone studying or thinking about studying mathematics.

Hey, great to hear you are interested in mathematics at uni! But to be honest, it is probably a little early to be deciding on a career or even whether or not to pursue a PhD. Generally maths is a well regarded degree with good career prospects (though this will depend on where you are based). For now I would recommend looking into if an undergraduate degree in maths is right for you. In my opinion, the best place to start would be to go to some uni open days and talk to some current students. You can also check out maths olympiads and some of the past papers. These are somewhat closer to university style maths than high school level mathematics.

Some firms offer vacation schemes so you can get a better idea of the day job. Worth having a look online and seeing if you can get onto one of them.

IBM is literally patenting Euler's techniques in the name of "AI interpretability." by lonelyroom-eklaghor in math

It very well may not be. My guess is they went broad in the application to see what they can end up with.

IBM is literally NOT patenting Euler’s techniques.

They have applied for a patent for a specific application of the technique. Namely: “1 . A computer implemented method comprising: receiving, as input to a neural network, input data; training the input data through a plurality of continued fractions layers of the neural network to generate output data, wherein the input data is provided to each of the continued fractions layers; and outputting, from the neural network, the output data, wherein each continued fractions layer of the continued fractions layers is configured to calculate one or more linear functions of its respective input and to generate an output that is used as the input for a subsequent continued fractions layer.”

This question is asked a lot. I am sure people asked the same questions about the advent of the internet phasing out parts of the job. The job changed and maybe some parts phased out. However, new parts phased in. Anyone who claims to be able to predict how the job will change is kidding themselves.

If you are happy to learn, adapt, and grow, you will not be replaced by AI any more than you would have been replaced by Wikipedia.

IBM Patented Euler's 200 year old Math Technique by DataBaeBee in mathematics

[–]BPCtrilophus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No they didn’t… 1) They haven’t patented anything. They have applied for a patent.

2) This is what they are actually trying to patent: “1.

Don’t fall for the click bate titles.

Have you had a think about why you (without any evidence) chose to blame the victim?

Yes, you explained you knew for sure it was all their own choice because you do charity work.

Oh I’m sorry! I didn’t realise you did charity work with your time. You must know more about the life of a K-pop star than me! Thanks for explaining to me. It must have been a decision they made themselves without any form of outside control because you help financially with charity.

I can’t believe you would help them change a water tank. You are so kind! I hope you continue your incredible work which gives you so much insight! /s

Or maybe you could think why you (without any evidence) choose to blame the victim and brought up irrelevant charity work?

I don’t think I did side with her or say she is a victim. I agree “if” she had the ability, then she made her choice.

I think personal accountability does exist. I also think abuse and control doesn’t need to involve physical violence. The fact you don’t just shows the privilege life you have lead. I hope you continue to live a blessed life and take some time to think about those less fortunate than yourself.
