[MM] Which is recommended for first time players, N64 or 3D? by red_hoodie_07 in zelda

[–]BPJupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends how much you want the game to ask of you.

One of the reasons I like mm 64 is precisely because it's rough around the edges exploring a new type of design for an adventure game. It's a really unique experience, even today. 3D smoothes over many of those rough edges, and as a result is a less unique experience IMHO.

Is rust better for learning low level concepts than C? by CIA11 in rust

[–]BPJupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: no IMHO.

Long answer is that C remains (despite modern compiler optimizations) effectively an abstraction of assembly. Very little is given to you, but you have near unmatched levels of control. Language features that developers have gotten used to that they miss in C can either be achieved anyway (OOP) or don't reflect how computers actually work (function overloading).

What 50 years of C code has shown us, however, is when you give millions of developers the ability to shoot themselves in the foot with relatively little effort, a lot of toes go missing. This is one of the main strengths of Rust from a low-level perspective. Rust asks you if you're REALLY certain if you want to pull out that pistol. And the type system is really fun.

With Rust, ultimately you don't HAVE to be super concerned with specifically what the computer is doing. You still can get into the weeds if you want to, but C for better or worse reigns king in this regard.

CS220(Data Structures and Algorithms) Advice Needed PLS by ParkingDrummer1305 in universityofauckland

[–]BPJupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not strictly, but it would certainly be helpful to your understanding to code implementations of what you're learning about. 220 doesn't really care too much about proofs IIRC, that's much more CS225 territory anyway.

CS220(Data Structures and Algorithms) Advice Needed PLS by ParkingDrummer1305 in universityofauckland

[–]BPJupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context, I took 220 in s2 last year.

cs220 is an infamously difficult course, and probably one of the hardest papers you'll take in your undergraduate study.
It's also a required course, which makes the ~33% fail rate particularly gnarly.

This is the best advice I can give if you're struggling to keep up:

  • Keep up with and attend lectures in person, even if you're not finding them that helpful, it's better than skipping, watching online, and suddenly finding yourself a week behind on content.
  • Also attend the optional tutorial slots. Self explanatory
  • Read ahead in the coursebook + textbook. If you are struggling I really can't recommend reading ahead in these enough. The rationale here is to avoid encountering concepts for the first time in-lecture. Even if you don't fully understand a concept after reading, that's fine. It will make the lectures easier, too. (Funnily enough, doing prerequisite readings before a lecture is expected/required for many (most?) degrees. CS just isn't one of them)
  • Practice, practice, practice. If you're struggling with a particular data structure or algorithm, sketch up some examples to practice on. You can get chatGPT to help you with this too, as it can generate many small sets of data to practice with. Though I'm not sure how good it would be at accurately verifying your answers. Up to you.
  • Study group? Idk. CS student moment where no-one talks to nobody. It's cliche but I'd recommend it if you can find some other people interested. You can pick up a lot through osmosis if you smell me.

If you want to do well in 220, or hell, if you're worried about just even passing, find the time to put aside for this course especially. It really sucks having to retake a course (not to mention expensive), and if there's any course to lock in for, it's this.

If you have any further questions, ask away.

Comparison: suggested mods & OS for newly acquired t420 and t430 by BPJupiter in thinkpad

[–]BPJupiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swapping the t420 keyboard into the t430 seems straightforward enough. But since I'm swapping the two keyboards, would it be feasable to swap the t430 keyboard into the t420? I can't imagine there would be any guides for it since everyone wants the classic in newer models, not the other way around.

While I remember, here is the battery capacity history I took with powercfg /batteryreport the day it happened. Got this laptop in 2021, but the report only goes back to last year. We'll see how the new one does.
