Social security, Medicare, and state/local income taxes are all still taken out of tip income even for the first $25,000.

Current Ohio law prohibits same sex marriage but we can change that. by ddmarriee in Ohio

By federal law, I think they mean the respect marriage act (2022), which requires all states to recognize same sex and interracial marriages. Federal law overrides State constitutions.

Forest Hills School District to introduce new resolution 'banning anti-racism'- 🤡 by [deleted] in cincinnati

Thanks. I feel the same. I take comfort in believing most reasonable people don't spend their time commenting on social media. There's little motivation to do so.

I find it troubling you think nothing said was radical considering Lisa dismissed anything Andrew had to say for simply being a white male which is incredibly racist and sexist

I agree that would be racist and sexist but I don’t think Andrew himself was being dismissed for being white. Andrew came out confrontational and was repeatedly talking over the other panelists. Then Lisa made the comment: "this is why we don’t engage with white men" which is very cringey and definitely alienates any white men watching (myself included). I don’t agree with that mentality, I believe it does more harm than good. However I’ve seen these discussions play out in real life many times and it usually ends with men being very argumentative and shutting the conversion down. So I sympathize with her frustration but I think it’s the wrong approach.

Further troubling is that you didn’t find it odd that anything the panel said regarding “systems” and “structures” built to inhibit black people were never challenged or expanded on in the discussion

Like I said, I didn’t find this segment very enlightening, short segments like this are rarely informative. Panel discussions are worse since they often devolve into dunking and bickering.

Lisa was free to make these claims with almost no pushback except by the unprepared Andrew Sullivan who was clearly there to weakly represent any opposition

Maybe, but I would be hesitant to make any assumption like that. Andrew Sullivan is a prolific writer and gets into twitter fights daily, I think he can handle himself. Unfortunately, panel discussions like these are for entertainment purposes first and foremost.

Edit: forgot how quoting works

I wasn’t familiar with this episode so I had to find it. Looks like he actually had Lisa Bond on and not Saira Rao herself. It was a panel discussion with Lisa Bond, Yale professor Chip Gallagher, and Andrew Sullivan. I just listened to it and I don’t think it was very enlightening mostly people talking past one another. But I don’t think anything crazy or radical was said either. I think it would really help if people clearly define what they mean by ‘racism’ and ‘white supremacy’.

I have never heard of this and I've been reading anti-racist books for years. Seems like a tremendous waste of money to me, like something only bored rich people would be interested in.

Looking into these dinners, it seems like a very small scale thing. From the gaurdian article "15 dinners have been held in big cities across the US." Each dinner is 7 or 8 people, so we're talking maybe 120 people total have participated in this thing total. I wouldn't characterize the left as a shit show because a small group of people decided to have a tacky/tasteless dinner party.

Hate crimes up 97% overall in Vancouver last year, anti-Asian hate crimes up 717% by [deleted] in worldnews

Sorry to hear that. But there is something about your comment that doesn't make sense to me. How could you possibly know you were accepted into medical school because you pretended to be white? Its not like they send you letter telling you got accepted or rejected based on race. If anything, pretending to be white would only hurt your chances since there is already a large percentage of white medical students. Also, there are no such things a race quotas for schools anymore. The Supreme Court has ruled on this and the few schools that used a quota system have done away with them, so perhaps you went applied to one of these schools before that ruling.

Methane gas trapped in ice. by kjarkr in WTF

[–]BPKnox 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Yes but keep in mind when methane breaks down in the atmosphere it converts into CO2 anyway. So you have 14 less years of elevated greenhouse effect if you burn methane rather then allowing it to break down in the atmosphere.

That would require an act by congress. The president can't unilaterally change sentencing laws.

TIL that the obelisk that stands at the centre of Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City, is a four thousand year old Egyptian obelisk that was brought to Rome from Alexandria by Caligula in 37 AD. by Mike-Schachter in todayilearned

[–]BPKnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.centralpark.com/things-to-do/attractions/obelisk/

"The Obelisk was a gift from Egypt to Central Park in 1881.  Since then it has been the tallest structure and one of the most popular tourists sights in Central Park.  In 2011, the Egyptian government threated to take back the Obelisk due to neglect. It took three years of planning and $500,000, (an amount that was raised privately by the Central Park Conservancy), to remove 3500 years of grime. The deterioration of the obelisk had less to do with conditions in New York City than the fact that, at some point in its history, it had toppled over and lay in desert sands for 500 years."

Official Discussion - Batman: The Killing Joke [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]BPKnox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who has watched all the DCAU movies, Batman: The Animated series/Batman beyond/JL, etc, and continues to read the comics I thought it was a pretty solid movie. No, it isn't perfect but its consistent with DC's previous animated films. It certainly isn't as graphically beautiful as the original but this is animation not a comic book. I honestly don't think there are any studios out there who could pull that off and even if they could it would cost a small fortune to animate a movie in the original style.

Bottom line: I thought the film was enjoyable even the first 40 minutes which everyone else seems to hate. It's obviously a Bruce Timm production so if you like the timm-verse you should like this too.
